Stevenage station was moved a mile north I believe to cater for the new developments. Mudchute and Island Gardens stations on the DLR were relocated as the line was extended to Lewisham.

It is hard to imagine a more conveniently sited station that became so inconvenient

Amongst the "Airports that have Station", I'd always considered Gatwick to be a "Station that has an Airport" :)

Certainly the site of the 1940's Gatwick station is near enough to where the current station is now as viewed from http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm

There were two stations at Gatwick, Gatwick Racecourse, which is where Gatwick Airport station is now situated, and Gatwick Airport, which was about a mile to the south, where the original airport was situated. The "beehive" terminal at the old airport site is still in existance and can (or at least could a few years ago) be seen from the train on the up side. I can just remember the old Gatwick Airport station, but not Gatwick Racecourse, which must have been demolished by the mid 1950s when I was too young to remember.

SO I would say that Gatwick Airport station qualifies as one that has been resited, but doesn't qualify under the thread which relates to stations resited after the Beeching Axe.

I think that it was moved south in actual fact, bearing in mind that Stevenage Old Town is north of the current town centre.

Does Corby count ? Seems to have been on a couple of sites.

Felixstowe - the original station building is now a shopping centre and car parking, with the current station being a couple of hundred metres down the line.

Dalston Junction? I know the new one is roughly on the site of the original, but is sufficiently different to count.

Penryn on the Falmouth brach has moved. The old platforms extend north of the new "end on end" platforms with, IIRC, a little overlap.

Longbridge.

The original station was on the Halesowen/Old Hill branch and closed in 1964, the current station was opened in 1978 1/2 a mile away.

Interestingly the old station building is still intact despite afaik not being used for any other purpose since closure.

Birmingham Moor Street is another. Opened as a terminus station in the early 20th century, in 1987 the old station was closed and a new one opened on the through lines to Snow Hill. The old station was restored in the early noughties and has of course just been re-opened by Chiltern.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned St Pancras both the MML station and the Thameslink!

would be interesting to find the station which has moved the most or been renamed the most, or the station which has moved the furthest away from the original; but I'm not wanting to hi jack the thread. My contribution is Bury in Lancashire and those now on Tramways in Croydon,Manchester and Sheffield.

The current (new) Stevenage station is about a mile SOUTH of where the old one was situated.

Blackhorse Road on the Gospel Oak to Barking line has also been resited. It was moved to have a proper connection to the London Underground Victoria line. It was previously the other side of the road bridge just to the east of the current station, if you look carefully you can see remaints of the previous station.

In 1968 Looe station was moved 110 yards nearer Liskeard and the line cut back. A police station now stands on the original station site.

Weston Milton (Halt). Downside platform was moved 60 miles when the Weston-super-Mare loop was singled and is now the platform at Lympstone Commando. The Upside was also resited as the new alignment was to the centre of the trackbed.

Lostock Hall and Buckshaw Parkway (not quite on the site of the old Euxton ROF station).

Does Blackpool North count as the current station is former excursion platforms?

Three iffy ones here Driver 9000 :),Lostock Hall?,do you mean Lostock Junction?,the former is on the East Lancs line, the latter served Wigan and Preston,(now only Preston),and it's that one that has been rebuilt.
Buckshaw Parkway?....OK you can have that;)
Blackpool North?....No you can't have that!,it's not been resited,it's still in the same place, its just that the platforms take a different kind of passenger,it was worth a try though!..cheek!:)

How about Filton to Filton Abbey Wood.

Also, St Denys was originally called Portswood and was sited to the north of the current station. It was moved to the current site when the junction for the Portsmouth line was built and renamed St Denys to avoid confusion with Portsmouth.

Lostock Hall was on the west side of the bridge until its 1960s closure. It reopened on the east side of the bridge in the 1980s

How about Godley Junction moved a few hundred metres down the track and now just called "Godley"

Godley Junction became Godley East when the new station called Godley opened. They both stayed open for a while until Godley East closed in 1995

someone beat me to it lol

The original station was inside the City Walls somewhere near Network Rail's offices (was Jarvis) and Headquarters Building West.

Sheffield Midland was constructed sometime in the last decade of the nineteenth century. At one time the Midland Railway station was just east of the Wicker Arches.

Merthyr Tydfil.

The station was moved a short distance closer to Cardiff, the site of the original station is now a Tesco/shopping centre which proudly sports a large mural and description of the impressive former station that was demolished to build it. Nothing to be proud of in my opinion.

Travelling around the UK it is notable just how many supermarkets and retail parks have sprung up on what is obviously former railway land. It is sad really especially considering how car-centric these stores are that they have been facilitated by the eagerness of the railways to dispose of so much of the former network much of which would be of current or future use for transport purposes had it been ring-fenced.

Have been on the Brighton line today and I'm not sure that you can see the Beehive any more, I might have got a fleeting glimpse of it through the trees but not sure whether it was the Beehive or not, will be able to tell when the leaves hve fallen and you can see through the branches.

HOWEVER - the remains of a station platform are clearly visible on the up side in roughly the same place, and there is a location board "Tinsley Green" alongside. The old Gatwick Airport station was named Tinsley Green when opened in 1935 but the name was changed to Gatwick Airport in 1936, so there can't be any doubt that its is the old station.

In fact I went to Crawley today, I haven't read back through the entire thread, so apologies if it has already been mentioned, but the remains of both the old platforms are still in existance a short distance west of the current (resited) station - the old signalbox is also there and has been preserved by the Crawley Signal Box Preservation Society.

Old station was near the old town to the north.

Llanrwst may qualify - new station. Old station was renamed Llanrwst North.

Didn't the Beehive become the control tower for the heliport? BEA had 'copters there in the mid-1960s and there was a Decca Navigator Bell 47G I seem to recall.

Ah yes, I you've jogged my memory and I do believe that was the case. Didn't they run a helicopter shuttle between Heathrow and Gatwick at 15 minute intervals at one point in the 60s or 70s? I don't know if they landed at the Beehive, but if they did, they would have needed a coach transfer to the airport terminal as it's about a mile away.

Yes you are correct the helicopter service ran in the 1970s and early 1980s, a joint operation I think between BA/British Caledonian and the BAA I think, it ended when the M25 opened as that was meant to provide a fast road for bus services between LHR & LGW. (M 25 fast?) There has been talk this week of a high speed rail line between the 2 airports now, taking 15 mins.
