Given that there isn't 0.5tph at the moment, which is the capacity of the line, why would you need any loops? What is going to drive the demand to justify this change?
I explicitly said without loops - trains will still stop at Barhill so the line can be split into 2 sections. Just as trains can be flighted out of Inverness on the Far North Line even though there’s no loop until Muir of Ord.

But again, where is the justification for installing axle counters, RETB equipment etc.? For the current timetable, you'd only be avoiding potential delay on two instances.

You keep some flexibility at significantly less cost that the electric token block currently there. But I had wrongly assumed it was vintage signalling beyond the electrified line, but after searching it’s actually centrally controlled modern signalling to Girvan .

It's currently vintage signalling beyond Dalrymple Junction:
Dalrymple - Kilkerren - Girvan is (tokenless?) block.
South of Girvan is electric tablet block with boxes/instruments and loops at Girvan, Barrhill, Glenwhilly and Dunragit.

NR's preferred option is to modernise north of and rationalise south of Girvan.

Dalrymple-Kilkerran is Track Circuit Block, Kilkerran-Girvan is Tokenless Block.

Dunragit-Stranraer is still (technically) Key Token, although Stranraer box is switched out and the section is worked as a “One Train” section with Train Staff.
