Getting off early on an anytime single Welwyn Garden City instead of Welwyn North

Looking at going from Euston to Welwyn Garden city tomorrow in PM peak after 16:00 after arriving on Avanti advance ticket. Have a senior railcard, but not yet activated on Thameslink key ( silly rule - I can renew railcard on trainline, but can't add it to Thameslink until the old one expired yesterday, and then takes 5 days to validate )

Euston to WGC is £14.50 contactless.
Paper Euston to WGC with railcard is anytime London z1 or z1-2 to WGC depending if I go via King Cross or Finsbury park - £12.10 or £12.45.

But

I noticed that there is a 16:34 from Kings Cross first stop Welwyn North , and a paper anytime single from Z1 - WLW is £10.25

So if I buy the Z1 - WLW anytime single, can I catch any train from kings cross to either WGC or WLW for £10.25? which is cheaper than buying a ticket to WGC despite WLW being further.

National rail website says
7.1 Break of journey is allowed at any intermediate station along the permitted routes of travel except as set out in the National Rail Conditions of Travel Condition 16.3 (circular journeys) and 16.5 (crossing London). This also includes starting short of the origin on the ticket or finishing before the destination shown on the ticket.

Which suggests I can?

You mean the 1654 from KGX (suggested departure from Euston at 1634)? Yes you can buy a ticket for that, and finish short at WGC if you wish.

That said, if it was me, I would walk from EUS to KGX:

Distance: 860m from entrance to entrance via Doric Way / Church Way / Dangor Walk and the St Pancras concourse.

Just for completeness if youe ricket is Zone 1 Underground to Welwyn North then don't go to Kings Cross. It's faster to take the Victoria Line to Finsbury Park and change there.

Thanks both.

Ah - I was getting different fares depending on going via Finsbury park or Kings Cross - but with a change at Finsbury Park there is no physical gateline anymore between tube and national rail at platform 5/6?, so no-one would notice if I went via Z2.

The other alternative is change at highbury and Islington which is a cross platform change to slow WGC service.
I don't think the 16:54 KGX to WLW stops at finsbury park, so could take hat fast to WLW then a slightly longer taxi to my destination.

All depends what time I actually arrive in Euston. Plus a suitcase so probably wouldn't walk!

Just amazed the WLW is cheaper then WGC.

Thinking about it Finsbury Park is in Zone 2 so you'd need London Underground Zones 1-2 which is £10.55 rather than £10.25 for just Zone 1 (the fares used to be identical - I don't know when this changed).

It's platforms 7/8 at Finsbury Park these days but there aren't any barriers as it's all within the overall gateline.

The other alternative is change at highbury and Islington which is a cross platform change to slow WGC service.
The change at Highbury is a good one, especially if you have luggage.

I think you're correct.

It's three escalators down to the Victoria Line at Euston, whether you're going to Finsbury Park, Highbury or Kings Cross. Or if you're going to Kings Cross you could go to Euston Square but that's 400 yards in the wrong direction.

You can walk it in 10 minutes if you go via Somerstown. Don't walk along the Euston Road.

Just amazed the WLW is cheaper then WGC.
That's what happens when fares are 'simplified'.

Arguably it's interavailable?

Z1 single is used from Euston to Kings X then interavailability from Kings Cross (an appropriate London Terminal) to Finsbury Park?

A little bit of research, I’d be inclined to concur.

TfL FOI-3096-2526 in November 2025 said:
The Interavailable Routes are defined as follows:

1. Amersham – Marylebone/Baker Street
2. Stratford – Liverpool Street
3. Upminster – Fenchurch Street/Tower Hill/Tower Gateway
4. Richmond – Gunnersbury
5. Harrow & Wealdstone – Queens Park
6. Stratford - Custom House
7. Finsbury Park – Kings Cross/Moorgate
8. Walthamstow/Tottenham Hale/Seven Sisters - London Zone 1
9. Kentish Town – Moorgate/London Bridge/Elephant & Castle
10. West Ruislip – South Ruislip
