Will Winter be as bad as last year?

You have accurately described last winter, which in Met Office terms runs from Dec 1st to Feb 28th in a non leap year.

A very cold and snowy December. A January which started frosty but ended wet and windy, followed by one of the mildest Februarys for a number of years.

Which, if you combine all three months together, works out as an average winter.

If you consider average to be bad, then the answer is "Yes".

This was the sort of winter we used to have every year in 1970s/80s!

It will be similar to last years winter, I suspect that we are going back towards winters we used to have in the 70s/80s and that the winters we've had over the last 20 years were something of a short term respite.

If it's School, not College, it may close. I think most Children like it when School closes

My school doesn't usually close that easily - it is a 6th form College as well.

I got made redundant last November and didn't work until March of this year again. That presented me with the opportunity to enjoy the big freeze last December (Walks in the country etc) without having to worry about driving to work! I love the freezing cold and ice but, being back in work again, I don't fancy driving in it thanks very much!

Pah, we had far worse in the sixties, and we were better prepared. And nothing got gridlocked. And everything kept on moving. And no schools were shut, shall I go on?

The weather wasn't bad by winter standards at all last year. The problem was our response to it.

I ended up stranded for the second time in Sheffield, no buses loads of snow and so I had to walk 5 miles home
I love snow but it was mad, cars sliding as they come towards you. Light though at 4pm so that was a help.

I think it will be horrible again, hope its not November though, wait till I have the two weeks off at Christmas.

Based on the natural factors that I have covered, it would also be adequate to suggest well below average temperatures in terms of how I calculate solar activity into my forecasts. The UK will also begin to see the dire lag effects of the gulf stream shift couple this, especially if nothing improves soon. The La Niña should also continue to establish itself further as expected, and once again in terms of how it will influence the jet stream. We could therefore see widespread heavy snowfall once again, for the first part of winter at the very least. This would result in the fourth bad winter in succession for the UK, and should prove to be the worst of them all.

Well that's certainly how I would define a good winter.

Doesn't seem to be going that way at the moment even with increasing temperatures winters over the last few years have been getting worse (or back to normal).

Nor were they shut in the 1970s/80s when I went to school - apart from once when I remember it occurred due to the school boiler having failed. Nowadays, it seems we have not much more than a covering of snow and half the local schools are shut.

I don't want to start another thread but do you think Global Warming has stopped? You never hear it on the News anymore! Also, I wonder if we will get more and more amount of snow over the coming years
