I know the bus is faster, but apparently the train line is quite beautiful.

What kind of rolling stock can I expect on this route?

Also I read international tickets can only be bought from the station ahead of travel, is there any risk my chosen journey might be sold out if I just rock up and buy a ticket on the day of travel? Is there ticket machines or do I need to go to staff? How easy will that be in English?

I could just buy Flixbus which is quicker, but I'd prefer the train.

Route
Zagreb GK 08:40, Dobova 09:05-09:21, Ljubljana 11:03-11:08, Jesenice 12:08-12:30, Villach Hbf 13:15

EC 214 is an Austrian service, using Taurus-hauled intercity stock.

There's also Stadler MUs:

The 10:34, 14:13, 20:38 & 21:25 are modern air-conditioned Slovenian regional trains built by Stadler, 1st & 2nd class with power sockets at each pair of seats & free WiFi. Seat reservation is neither necessary nor possible on these trains.

The 08:40, 12:50 & 19:39 are locomotive-hauled long-distance trains, these are slightly faster. Journey time is between 2h07 and 2h31. The 08:40 & 12:50 have 1st & 2nd class, the 19:39 is 2nd class only.

I don't recall seeing any ticket machines at Zagreb main station but I'm sure there will be no problem buying a ticket in person, many Croatians speak English well but it can't be that hard even if they don't - just don't mangle the pronunciation of Ljubljana like an American I heard saying the Js as English Js :p

You don't need to specify the time of the train which would probably be the hardest part to do without a translator.

I took the 1250 train earlier this year and the 1st class section was smelly and uncomfortable, until the inspector came by after about 30 minutes, and kicked everyone except me out (to be fair it was quite difficult to identify that it was 1st class). On that basis I'd choose any of the other departures.
