Firstly, apologies if this has already been covered before but I could not find an open thread already in existance.

Basically, what I'd like to know is if any fellow forum members have pets, whether it's something as common as a cat or as odd as a tarantula. Why do you etc. Please vote in the poll (be aware it is public so people will be able to see what you have voted for; it is multiple choice).



I'll start: I have a leopard gecko called Gary who I got for my 13th birthday. When I got him, he was about 3 inches long and was only a month old, but you cannot tell a gecko's sex until they are six months old - we then discovered Gary was in fact a female! We didn't change his/her name so now I have a gecko who is six inches long, has a male name, but is in fact a female.

I also have some tropical fish in the Lounge (with a couple of shrimp inside).

I forsee a large debate over cats vs dogs...

I have a six year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel called Dash, photo attached. He is currently sprawled out over my sofa with a blanket on top of him and a cushion under his head. He is the most spoilt dog I have ever known but we love him to bits really!

It's a bit difficult for me to vote when there is no option for 'no pets'. If it means anything, I dislike dogs less than I dislike cats, but I don't care for animals of any sort.

Yesterday was the tenth anniversary of my cat dying after a short illness.

I haven't got another as cats dont usually survive long on the road I live by.

I have a 13 year old mongrel dog (Labrador/Border Colly) he's still in fine fettle even at his age. We've also had over the years cats, rabbits, gerbils, guinea pigs and fish.

Anyway got 4 cats and a dog. Im more of a cat person and got a lovely Scottish fold

I used to have a rabbit but it passed away so for the moment I have a dog, border collie called CJ and is currently 13, a cat Molly currently nearly 7, Harold a Syrian hamster and is 8 months .
I would like a crocodile but don't think that's likely (please Santa)

I did live with someone for ten years who liked animals. At one point he had six dogs, seven cats, three ferrets, seven chickens, two ducks, two chinchillas, two rats, a parakeet and a varying number of rabbits (in double figures)..... in a two bedroomed terrace with (thankfully) a very long garden.

For some reason that seems to have put me off living with any animals whatsoever - and anyone else, for that matter.......

I have a ten year old collie cross called Lady. Had her from being 6 weeks old. She is my world, my baby (see avatar)

Also have two Guinea pigs that i found in a card box while walking the dog. Rod and Gilbert are fantastic and regularly join Lady for cuddles!

I quite like having animals around, and the missus is animal mad so at the moment I just go with the flow of whatever she brings home: We currently have two mice (Rolo and Minstrel) who sleep in a teapot, and a hamster called Squeak who is getting on for two years old, which is pretty good for a dwarf hamster. Had a couple of tree frogs a little while ago.

She's volunteered for the cats protection for about a year so far as well, which means that we've seen a constant and bewildering stream of cats passing through our temporary ownership, with all their different demeanours.

The cats protection stuff has more tied in with my favoured method of accumulating pets, which is taking in animals that you find: Up until recently, barring one demented rabbit, there were no questions asked about the fact that all of our pets were simply animals that we had taken in, or that were already resident in the garden and got friendly! There's been quite a menagerie over the years, including a ferret, a chicken, a non-native finch, three hedgehogs and a field mouse that was hand-raised from a pup (After the rest of its' family had been eaten by one of the local cats) and lived to the ripe old age of three years.
