TfW names a Class 197 unit "Penarth Pier"

It may not get to Penarth but will get a lot nearer to it than 001 or 004 will get to their namesakes (Philadelphia Robin and Vancouver Red Dragon)!

There is a chance that both units at some point may get to within 100 yards of their namesakes while at Wrexham General during the regular visits of the owners to Wrexham FC with both locations adjacent to each other :)

A bit odd to name a Class 197 Penarth Pier, as it will go nowhere near the Penarth branch.
My thoughts too, seeing that the line is operated by 756s.

It would entirely make sense to name a 756 after Penarth Pier or Whitmore Bay etc

Thank you for educating me. Even Google struggled a bit with this!

They should also name these trains after places in England served by TFW. How about Ludlow Castle & Stokesay Castle for starters?

Bemused as to how naming a 197 after a local Welsh landmark is "infantilising" the railway. It certainly won't have cost much to do, likely just a small vinyl.

Some forum members have forgotten 43002 "Top of the Pops". That had many swooning and clutching at their pearls in the 1980's.

That appears to be a fair chunk of the planned names, 107 there if my counting is right although some of the names repeat.

This is 197009, in Chester Carriage Sidings (edit: on the 24th September), showing the bilingual Welsh / English name Pier Penarth / Penarth Pier, with the subtext Enywyd gan / Named by Ava, Creigiau Primary School.

Quite why Transport For Wales didn't do it properly and write Enywyd gan / Named by Ava, Ysgol Gynradd Creigiau Primary School, I couldn't say.

A good few 197s have been newly named, i believe that one, 111, 114, 118, and 123. More to come hopefully!

strange choice of unit as it is unlikely ever to get to Penarth.
All discussed upthread. Basically never been a reason to name trains after a place they actually go to. Best example I can now think of is "North Star" !. Perhaps even "Odin", "Thor" & "Cyclops" as I have never encountered them.
Edit - "Orion" and "Vulcan" could be interesting.

I reckon better to name them after places people might be tempted to go to (ideally by rail).

Up the creek
As for pier names. I suppose many piers might not be in areas served by TfW but 197s get near enough. I am showing my ignorance but did the GWR ONLY name Castle class steam engines after castles that were really close to GWR lines (as close as Penarth is to Cardiff).

Generally the Castle names were of castles in the GWR/WR’s general area, but there were a few exceptions: Corfe and Denbigh (all four of the latter) come to mind. However, some of the castles were fairly obscure. Keeping to the company’s area, if broadly interpreted, seems to have been possible with most classes, but (as a recent thread discussed) some of the Hall class names came from a long way away.

Never encountered Odin? I see him regularly down the local. Eccentric bloke, loves tramping in for some mead with a pair of ravens on his shoulders. He’s only got one eye after some hoohah with a fountain, and there was nasty business with a tree he doesn’t like to mention. Nice enough chap though, buys his round.
