2TPH Littlehampton - VIC serve CLJ and stop at Preston Park and Hove which are not far from Brighton Station (1m28ch and 1m35ch respectively). Depending on where exactly you are heading to they may even be more convenient.

Preston Park and Hove aren't particularly convenient for the locations where the large majority of people will be heading. The passenger figures at Brighton are about 5 times the combined usage of Preston Park and Hove.

Skipping East Croydon has negligible savings due to congestion around the area and generally lower speed limits. So if you’re stopping at Clapham you may as well stop at East Croydon as well.
The standard 2min at ECR adds 3 min to the booked time, which is not insignificant. Of course, if TL to Brighton has a serious capacity problem, that is an issue, but I thought the argument was about connectivity.
