Basically got the same thing; no idea what they want. Spoke to people I know at Northern, and they keep saying even the recruitment teams don't have a clue what's going on in terms of what direction they are going. If you passed the score needed, hopefully they don't make you wait a year until you can reapply
Email says to look out for future vacancies, doesn’t give a time limit on reapplying

Which depot did you apply for?
Manchester Piccadilly

Manchester Piccadilly
Thanks for your reply, sorry to hear about that and hopefully you can get the next one!

I'm waiting for my response from the sheffield depot, I got 76% overall with 85% 95% and 50% . Im hoping that they learn towards the first 2 categories obviously more! Fingers crossed

Got an email this morning to say that even though I passed the maki assessment with 77%, they’re only progressing people with the highest scores. So it’s a no for me this time
I got the same for Piccadilly with 76% - need to brush up on my situational judgement multiple option answers. Not bad for my first attempt I guess.

Just had an email to say I’d passed the minimum benchmark required for this role but they’re only progressing those with the very highest scores. I scored 83% and have seen others scoring less than this who have been progressed, so definitely feel a bit hard done to but I guess that’s the nature of applying for this role. I applied to Sheffield - good luck to those who are through to the next stage.

I was just thinking some of the maki thresholds are incredibly high. Logically they must score the application itself and the questions we answers. When they say highest scoring applicants they must mean that too

Has anyone got any good links to maki online assessment ? Preferably something very close to the real thing as I’ve heard a few times that it wasn’t the same on the practice paper as it was for the real thing ! Any help would be fantastic

Do you know whether the people who have progressed are from the sheffield applications? I still haven't had any update yet!

Hi, mine hasn't changed yet from met the threshold but I haven't received an email saying I haven't been successful either? I wonder whether its worth contacting recruitment? Congrats by the way!

When did your portal update to the invite to psychometric tests, do you know?

That’s interesting.

Mine never changed to “Invite to Psychometric assessment” was just on met the threshold then received the email to say they won’t be progressing with my application.

Can I ask what score per test you scored?

I scored 83% overall.
Speed 87%
Safety 88%
Resilience 75%

TIA

Hi all, quick update and question.
I’ve now passed the psychometric assessments and MMI for the Northern Trainee Train Driver role in Manchester and have been invited to the next assessment day.

The first stage consists of a group exercise, individual task and 10-minute “teach us something” presentation. You need to pass all three to progress to the Driver Manager Interview.

Has anyone recently done this version of the process and can shed any light on the group or individual tasks? The invite doesn’t give any details.

I know previous posts have mentioned the station/platform group task and LEGO task, but with the presentation now included, this seems like it could be a new process, so I’m unsure whether those still apply.

Any recent experiences would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Well done on passing the tests and mmi,
I passed my psychometric last Wednesday, been invited back to the mmi this Friday because they didn’t have time to everyone that passed on the day. (Any advice?)

So after that I will have to go for another assessment day, and if I pass that I finally get an interview. And after that we get added to a talent pool with no guarantee of a job or training place?

Hey, congratulations!!

I have made it to the same point as yourself (fingers crossed to us both) mine is for a different depot though.

I have a few ideas for this presentation but as you said it seems to be something new and I am wondering what others are planning to present as we only have 10 minutes and need to allow time for questions.

A few people have said to me the group task is more about how we all work as a team and not particularly on getting the correct answer, I have been given the advice of speak up but don't over power and try and include people who haven't spoken up if possible, all without making it too overly obvious you are specifically doing it for the test, it needs to be natural. Keep and eye on the time swell apparently people in the past have failed at this point due to not keeping an eye on the time to summarise an answer for when asked.

This is all the advice I have been given for this upcoming assessment day.

It’s very interesting.. love to know what they look at when deciding.

I got:

Speed 81
Safety: 88:
Resilience: 69

My status is still on invite to psychometric but not heard anything since doing the Maki assessment on 29th August.

I’m not sure if I’m honest. I only checked prior to posting this. Did the maki on 29th August but not heard anything since

Thanks for the reply! I did the same date for my maki assessment! I haven't had an update on my online portal but also haven't received an 'unsuccessful' email! Im checking both at least twice a day but nothing yet, hopefully something soon. Congrats on getting to the next stage, what are you using to study?

Nice well done mate, how was psychometrics?
I found them ok to be fair. I'm glad I practiced the dots. That definitely helped, not sure there was anything else that you could really practice for. MMI was intense, but ok. I found what helped me for that was looking at the non-technical skills required for train drivers. The one I found the hardest was the joy sticks, thought I'd failed, especially as I was gripping so hard I pulled one of the knurled metal handles off as I was doing it!

Well done mate, when did you sit your psychometrics for Newcastle role? Did you do MMI straight after the tests?
I did them last year as part of a Depot Driver application. I passed all the tests, but eventually found out that the job has basically been listed in error and there was no position! Yeah, I did MMI straight after, but there was only two of us that reached that stage.

I’m through to the assessment/dmi day, the person who did my mmi said in the morning it’s a group task between 3 or 4 candidates, then there’s a solo task which is similar to the memory test but harder and includes codes, then you need to do a 10 minute teach them something presentation and can be on anything you want, if you pass these 3 you do the DMI in the afternoon. They wouldn’t give too much away though.
