Tesco will acept all rival vouchers as well in their big stores, as long as you meet the required criteria, nothing like capturing your rivals customers!

I know - it's quite amazing. They accept conditional spend vouchers from M&S, the Co-op, and even Boots!

This is going very off topic now... Yorkie started it though. ;)

Does that mean if for example Southern did a promo on off-peak tickets I could get the discount on XC or Virgin priced fares. :p

No, the supermarket analogy was given by someone else. I was just picking holes in it ;)

It would... until they realise their mistake, and several weeks later they get someone with a bit of IT knowledge to fix it! That said, their promo was misleading because it did suggest it applied to all tickets, not just tickets priced by them. This made it difficult to determine if it was actually an error or not, at first.

In my experience officers attempting to deal with 100s of people in a volatile situation are more likely to threaten arrest than laugh if you don't follow their instructions.

This is a bit different though - here you, as an individual, are seeking advice. I was referring to cases where authorised persons instruct all passengers for a particular destination to catch a specific train without any reference to the ticket held.
If this happened I don't think anyone could claim you were acting wrongly by doing so. However, I don't think it's likely to happen very often. How you would prove it (in court if necessary) is another matter - but then again, could you turn it round by asking the TOC to prove it didn't happen?

Surely in the situation you described, the onus is on you to prove that you were instructed in that way, rather than the TOC to prove that you were not.

In a civil case, the onus is on the claimant to prove his/her story on a balance of probabilities.

Yep, normally at CLJ, the most common offender is the 18:27 SWT Service to Exeter St Davids.

"We're sorry to announce that the 18:27 SWT Service to Exeter St. Davids is full and standing"

This one is 6 coaches but always seems to be full, the ones before and after, platform staff normally make a manual announcement asking passengers for Woking not to board this service as it is meant for those going much further who otherwise wouldn't get a seat!

A few months back I got that train and heard that exact announcement,I was going to Basingstoke, there were seats in first class but a family got on with a pushchair and luggage and stood in the vestibule between standard and first, preventing anyone boarding at that door (who might have had a first class ticket) from getting into first class, Yep,they got off at Woking. I confess I then went into first class and got a seat for the rest of my journey, the train manager announced he was at the rear of the train so I knew he wouldn't get through everyone standing further back and reach me before I got off.

Try being a football fan sometime.....instructions from the police for all xxx fans to board the train on platform yy are FAR from uncommon.

I remember watching Wolves play Barnsley, having travelled to the game with London Wolves which I am a member of. Wolves won and were promoted which meant spirits were high and some fans perhaps a tad over-boisterous.

After the 'delights' of a Pacer to Sheffield the BTP were instructing all Wolves fans to board a particular service (presumably to get them out of town ASAP). Myself and my fellow London Wolves were nearly arrested for refusing to board that train. It was only after showing our Group booking destination St Pancras and proof of addresses in London and the South East that the BTP agreed to allow us to take our booked train!

Your approach would have seen us potentially financially penalised as well as taking hours longer to get home!

I would imagine in that case the police will be able to testify that they gave such orders?

I have been herded onto the train in a football context, although never a major problem as I had walk-on tickets.

Not forgetting of course that some TOCs don't offer advance tickets (or reservations) from stadium stations on match days, presumably fot this reason.

I had the opposite to this once, a guy on the last train claiming he had to get the train as the police had thrown him off the supporters bus.

One full-price UPFN later...
