One thing I noticed with the stock moves on Network Rail metals is that the vehicles exist in TOPS with a 9 added to the front of the painted number, so that 48001 becomes 948001 and so on.

Looking at the 48xxx vehicles, these are the current TOPS locations of the ones that have moved on Network Rail (the missing numbers are shown at 00000 meaning their location has not been "initial loaded" to TOPS yet):

48001 AT GASWOODGB ARR 12.50 ON 20-6X261 02/04/26
48004 AT CAMD 2102 ARR 00.23 ON 20-6X211 17/07/25
48008 AT GOOLEGWGB ARR 17.02 ON 45-6X102 24/06/26
48009 AT GASWOODGB ARR 11.35 ON 23-6X351 23/07/26
48030 AT WRUISDPGB ARR 08.27 ON 89-6X071 12/09/25
48031 AT WRUISDPGB ARR 08.28 ON 72-6X24C 23/01/26
48032 AT GASWOODGB ARR 13.07 ON 20-6X261 24/04/26
48062 AT WRUISDPGB ARR 13.14 ON 89-6X211 10/10/25
48063 AT GASWOODGB ARR 12.55 ON 20-6X261 10/08/26
48064 AT GOOLEGWGB ARR 11.14 ON 16-6X781 04/09/26
48065 AT OLD DALBY ARR 14.15 ON 20-6X261 25/06/26
48066 AT OLD DALBY ARR 16.59 ON 20-6X241 20/07/26
48067 AT OLD DALBY ARR 17.00 ON 20-6X221 19/08/26
48074 AT GOOLEGWGB ARR 13.32 ON 45-6X411 14/08/26
48075 AT GASWOODGB ARR 11.30 ON 23-6X351 09/06/26
48076 AT GASWOODGB ARR 13.14 ON 23-6X431 02/09/26
48077 AT OLD DALBY ARR 16.34 ON 20-6X221 27/08/26

As far as I know, all the trains have moved together as complete 9-car formations so the location of 48001 should match 38001 and so on. The info should be correct but as with all TOPS data there can occasionally be errors...

Vehicles moved to London Underground for testing are shown at West Ruislip (48030 / 48031 / 48062). The reason for 48004 being shown at CAMDEN SIGNAL 2102 is due to a typo - this location has a Stanox number of 72423 in TOPS and West Ruislip LUL Depot is 73423.

**

Movements on the main line in the UK this month have been:

38064 / 48064 moved from Gascoigne Wood to Goole as 6X78 on the 4th September.

38076 / 48076 moved on 2nd September from Old Dalby to Peterborough as 6X30, forward as 6X34 to Doncaster Down Decoy and 6X43 to Gascoigne Wood.

The 6X34 working is seen in profile with 57306 and 57310 either end:

Many thanks,
Was going to ask the state of play as things seem to be progressing with sets appearing, this covers it well.

There was another movement on Friday 18th Sep, 48079 / 38079 were moved from Goole to Old Dalby as 6X22 by 99007 / 99012.

There's a good video on YouTube from DestinationTrainsPlanes showing the arrival and shunting operations at Old Dalby:

I saw a 2024 stock train at South Ealing today. I assume it was moving from Northfields to the closed section of the line for testing. Anyway, is this perhaps the first time when it passes along the stretch of the line with active passenger service (Acton Town - Heathrow is open today)?

They have already been testing between Northfields and Acton Town while normal service trains operate to/from Heathrow. Including 18-20, 25-27 August midweek closures.

Saw the stock pretty close up at Hammersmith today; the walk through carriages look impressive but I'm sure the public are going to moan about the small windows - almost looked like the size of the '40's waterloo and city stock

Two more stock moves have recently taken place, on Thursday and Friday:

38063 / 48063 was moved from Gascoigne Wood to Goole on 24th September by 47727 & 99011:

The reason for this design was to create space for the Air Con ducting. Can't have it both ways!

Complain about windows and have brand new air conditioned stock, otherwise, its stick with the 73ts! I am almost certain people will not complain when these are in service during the transition phase.

Not for air con ducting but structural support the air ducting fits in between the doors and window.

See around 7:05

The small windows fit the shape of the train at least.

Rather depends where you board the trains during the transition.

I lived near Osterley in mid 1990s and all the commuters hated the refurbished units, compared to the original layout. Because many seats had been removed, and standing from Osterley wasn't fun, whereas could generally get a seat on unrefurbished units.

Can't believe that so called 'mid life' refurbishment was 30 years ago

Were there really that many more seats on the pre-refurb units? I am actually surprised people did not assume these refurbished units were new at the time! Such was the quality of the 73ts refurb.

Also, the refurb, essentially from the passenger perspective was purely cosmetic. The current upgrade is far far far more than that, almost revolutionary.

They managed to put both A/C and large windows on the Glasgow Subway Stadler trains though, which are even smaller than the Picc!

Glasgow's underground tunnels are much cooler, with an ambient temperature of 16°C to 19°C, so the aircon isn't nearly as heavy duty.

This is due to geology, soil type, depth, water table, climate and the intensity of the services.

Looks like the 24 stock is currently doing testing correct me if I’m wrong though?
No, this is the west end rail adhesion train on its first day of use this year. It is a three car 1973TS.

As I have said before in this thread, people need to stop assuming any train with a 7 series is a 24TS run, especially when in-the-know staff (Hello) have repeatedly said that there won’t be any traffic hours testing for quite some time.

These assumptions really aren’t helpful for anyone. Not an issue with asking if a particular train is 24TS, but boldly claiming “it looks like the 24 stock is testing” just wastes everyone’s time.

They do look small, I thought the 2009TS window size was bad when they entered service, but somehow it feels worse on the 2024TS as they are divided into three tiny windows, while the 2009TS is one rectangle narrow window. I mean it’s just about acceptable at the Victoria Line is predominantly underground in customer service, though the Piccadilly Line runs overground for a large part of its journey, it will be less welcome as a passenger. Let’s hope the LED lights are good then!

Not really relevant, but it makes me wonder if the future of tube train design would be making trains that look more like 95/6 or the 70’s stock but modernised. The 24ts windows are there for structural strength but perhaps it’s also current limitations I guess with tube train design.

Most tube trains have shallow windows, it's only the 92 which had massive windows wrapping into the ceiling, which caused problems with overheating in summer when outside, and left no room for PIS displays

TfL Board, Programmes and Investment Committee papers seem to be authorising additional value and contract amendments on one person operation cctv. Appears it is taking extra engineering time

(a) approve additional Procurement Authority for the One Person Operated (OPO) CCTV contract for the sum set out in the paper on Part 2 of the agenda; and
(b) note that the matters for which the above authorities are sought extend
in excess of and beyond the period of the 2026/27 Budget and 2026 Business Plan. Provision will, therefore, need to be made for them in future Business Plans and Budgets

Some snippets from the TfL Board, Programmes and Investment committee papers for next weeks meeting

8.2.4 The PLU Programme team continues to work towards the first train entering passenger service in the window of December 2026 and June 2027. The Forecast Completion Date, to complete the full fleet replacement, remains under review as the Programme continues to mature but is currently forecast at Q4 2028/29.
Q4 2928-2029 is Jan-Mar 2029, so another 2.5 years
8.2.7 Full Route Clearance has now been achieved across the entire line which means infringement and gauging works have been completed to allow the new trains to run unrestricted on all branches, significantly increasing the available volume of testing to ensure reliability once the trains go into passenger service. To date we have accumulated almost 9,000km of mileage across the four test trains, collecting valuable data to enable us to ensure the trains are ready to enter passenger service safely.
8.2.9 Customers will shortly start to see the new trains being tested on the network during passenger hours as we continue to ramp up our testing programme in readiness for introducing the first train entering passenger service
