I took a service from west Wales to Carmarthen last week which arrived at 11ish, then noticed it was the same unit when I returned at 13.42. Checked on Train Mapper, it sits in Carmarthen for 2 3/4 hours, which I get as it then forms a Manchester service but given there is a shortage of 197s it does seem a waste of resource to have it sat there!
It lays over while GWR services fill the two hour gaps in TfW services in each direction between Cardiff and Carmarthen with services from and to Paddington.

There’s already services to Pembroke Dock and Fishguard around that time, so without unnecessarily duplicating the GWR service there’s not a lot else it can do.

I believe the two services between Carmarthen and Cardiff that were withdrawn a few timetables ago (roughly 9am and 11am departures from Carmarthen) just sit in Carmarthen until later. On Saturdays they run through to Cardiff as before and I believe if the plan to start the Bristol service goes ahead they will be reinstated for that reason on a weekday too.

Is there a specific date on the cards for the Cambrian introduction? We’re into autumn now and I’ve seen 17th September being floated around as a date.

Posts 10754 and 10759 said that the latest plan is a mid October start for phase 1 of the changeover.

Looking good for an October changeover.Still not confirmed though.
There have been many unit moves during the past two weeks culminating in just two units remaining at Holyhead (028 and 033).
Chester TMD and the middle yard must be full of units.
Not 100% sure which units are located at Mach for testing.035 arrived during the week possibly replacing 029.Are 030 and 039 still there?

Yesterday afternoon there were 2 units stabled on Chester station, 5 in the station sidings and at least another 4 visible on the front part of Chester depot (although I didn't go past the depot to see what else might be there). Also saw 197123 work an ecs off the depot which hasn't been in service much recently.

It's now harder to see which 197s are on the Cambrian, as the Cambrian Coast Line runs have now changed to be Pwllheli-Machynlleth-Pwllheli, rather than Machynlleth-Pwllheli-Machynlleth as they were before.

On Fri 4/9/26, inbetween seeing the Pwllheli-Machynlleth and Machynlleth-Pwllheli runs (197029) near (but not at) Pwllheli, I got the train to Pwllheli and back and 197030 was in Pwllheli station siding.

I saw that 197035 came on (Realtime Trains, not an actual sighting), but I don't know whether 197039 has gone off (or if it's stayed on, which would mean 4 197s on the Cambrian for the first time).

029 and 039 have both worked test runs today. Thanks for confirming the others.

Thanks :)

Today (Mon 7/9/26), 197029 was working the Pwllheli-Machynlleth-Pwllheli crew training runs, and it turns out that 197030 was being used for static crew training at Pwllheli.

The morning Machynlleth-Aberystwyth-Machynlleth crew training runs and the Machynlleth-Shrewsbury-Machynlleth ones (but not the afternoon Machynlleth-Aberystwyth-Machynlleth ones) also ran today - I'm guessing they were what 197039 was doing?

I wonder if 197035 is actually on, and if so, what it's been doing (if anything).

I've been informed that 197039 was on the Machynlleth-Shrewsbury-Machynlleth crew training runs today (Wed 9/9/26).

EDIT
Also 197035 is in Machynlleth - the old shed, and 197030 has done today's Pwllheli-Machynlleth crew training run.

If 197029 is still at Pwllheli, then it means there could be 4 197s on the Cambrian.

Unfortunately it didn't run, however it turns out that 3C50+3C51 were also bought for the early hours of Tue 22/9/26 and Wed 23/9/26 (in addition to Tue 15/9/26). They were all put on the system on Thu 27/8/26:

3C50 0005 Cardiff Canton Sidings to Bristol Temple Meads - Departing on 22nd September 2026

3C51 0130 Bristol Temple Meads to Cardiff Canton Sidings - Departing on 22nd September 2026

3C50 0005 Cardiff Canton Sidings to Bristol Temple Meads - Departing on 23rd September 2026

I'm presuming that the 3C12 service showing on RTT for 197039 today is one of the training runs from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury and back

Today it (197039) seems to be doing Machynlleth Sidings - 3C02 - Aberystwith - 3C03 - Machynlleth - 3C11 - Shrewesbury - 3C12 - Machynlleth Sidings - 3C00 - Aberystwith - 3C01 - Machynlleth Sidings.

I think it is pot luck that the training/testing run is on the systems with the unit number included so this might just be an example of a very common set of runs but with a unit number showing this time.

3C02/3/11/12 actually were 197039 on the Machynlleth-based [morning Aberystwyth] and Shrewsbury crew training runs, whereas 3C00/3C01 (intended for an [afternoon Aberystwyth 197]) were used by 158822 for a maintenance test run. 3C04/3C05 (Pwllheli-Machynlleth-Pwllheli) were cancelled (they aren't usually) due to a 158 service being given priority.

And yes, just to be clear for others (I know you know), the 197-on-Cambrian unit numbers actually showing are (until they enter service) the exception rather than the norm.

Just saw 197114 at Cardiff Central a few minutes ago, now has the name 'Y Porthmon'

Not sure when it received this name
Porthmon means "someone who drives animals over a long distance to sell them".

It fits, especially given the Cardiff - Holyhead route that's mainly served by 197s.

Was that one of the names on the original master list from when all the 197s were to be named? It was a schools competition if I remember rightly. However, since two of them have been named after the Wrexham AFC owners and one after Mistar Urdd, I’m guessing that not all those original names can be used. A bit of a shame for those kids if they miss out!

Below the name, it says 'Enwyd gan | Named by Ynyr, Ysgol Bontnewydd'

Ah, that’s the same format as 197007 Happy Valley (I think!), named by a child from Ysgol Tudno (Happy Valley being an area on Y Gogarth in Llandudno). That certainly suggests they’ve restarted the naming from that original competition.

IIRC they were all supposed to be lakes, rivers, mountains, castles or other geographical or architectural features. I’m not sure how Y Porthmon fits into that but my recollection may be wrong anyway.

Thanks for the update. It's never as clear as it appears (when it appears !).

I've been told (I do have permission to pass this on) that the plan has gone back to 'big bang' (straight to all 197s from the start of 197 entry-to-service on [a few days after mid-way through October 2026] to the 158s coming off within 48 hours after then.

(I believe that this is still initially Cambrian-only, rather than Cambrian-Birmingham)

I noticed on 197111 the catering cupboard has been painted and has 'food on the move' on it
Is the plan to order food at your seat happening soon then ? Today it was just the usual trolley service.

It would be good if this area was put to use seen as it takes up space.

Departing on 22nd September 2026)

and

(3C51 0130 Bristol Temple Meads to Cardiff Canton Sidings
Departing on 22nd September 2026)

are actually showing an allocation (of 197040+197114), which looks a lot more promising!

(See the attached Realtime Trains screenshots)
