An update from Neil Grabham, Interim Managing Director
There are
encouraging signs of continued progress across our Intercity services, with fleet availability improving and punctuality increasing by around 2 - 3% last week compared with the previous week, particularly on our Sheffield services.
Importantly, since we increased the timetable to
92% of the full Intercity service on 1 September, fleet availability has consistently met or exceeded the requirements needed to deliver the timetable. This gives us greater confidence to begin planning the
next step towards our timetable restoration, with our next phased proposed increase taking the service to
96% of the full timetable.
However, we recognise that
performance is not yet where we want it to be. Cancellations remain a challenge and the impact of previous hot weather on track quality, alongside associated speed restrictions, continues to affect punctuality. We are working closely with Network Rail to prioritise the work needed to address these issues, while continuing to work with Hitachi to improve fleet reliability.
We are also continuing to explore options to
strengthen the Intercity fleet, including the potential to lease additional trains, which could provide greater resilience as we work towards restoring the full timetable.
There is still more to do, but the continued improvement in fleet availability and punctuality is a positive step forward. Our focus remains on
building a reliable and sustainable service, and we will keep our customers and stakeholders informed as we take the next steps towards restoring the full Intercity timetable.
