Remaining class 58s

Still in Woippy Yard, Metz as far as I know. Viewable from the D153L road that goes over the yard.

Bloody hell, must have been a good 3 years since it was dropped there. I guess they don't really have much of a reason to dispose of it other than to free up space.

Seem to remember hearing they were going to get 58023/58048 operational.

58012 I'm fairly certain was rumoured to be the spares donor loco.

Who is ’they’? 023 is owned by Ed Stevenson; I’m not sure about 012 or 048.

58048 engine did run 2 years ago, but the French class 20 seems to have taken priority. They've also done some work on the 37/9 recently

I don’t know the purpose of the visit but UKRL has experience with the electronic control systems. Class 56 and 58 have a reasonable amount of commonality between them.

In addition to those already mentioned, one cab, the underframe and the cooling unit are at the Ecclesbourne Railway. If all goes to plan the underframe and cooling unit will run again, using bogies and electrical gear from two different locomotives of different classes, and a new superstructure, to reproduce something that went extinct in 1966.

But in reality 58016 has not turned a wheel since it's move from Barrow Hill. would anyone lash out thousands of Euros to transport a demic 58 from Spain to the UK, then spend thousands more (assumng parts were available) when 58016 would probably be an easier bet to restore to use.

The problem I believe is that 58016 is unable to be moved from Leicester because the depot has no road access, and I think 58016 needs axebox UAT before it can nove.

In my opinion 58050 will end up scrapped in Spain, unless some benevolent and fairly rich soul undewrites it. Would there be room for it at 1:1 at Margate ? Could it be shipped on a ro ro ferry to Margate ?

DB has reportedly advised the C58LG that 58050 is scrap. Asbestos. The C58LG must have made an announcement somewhere.

You really would have thought so. Maybe it is just a way of a company not having to return said 58.

Very much doubt it seeing as BR were requiring locos sold into preservation to be proven not to have it or have it removed before sale by then.
Some European locos were built with it in 1980s, I believe. Sure some Belgian 21s and 27s have been found to contain it along with French 7200s and 22200s?
Sounds like a convenient excuse to me but be surprised if there was an element of truth in it.

They are actively looking for RA 7 traction; so a return to the UK for those 4 could well lead to being recommissioned and back in traffic

Plenty of Class 60s available in this country and DB has a surplus of 66s.

Agree with you, the rasons given re Asbestos doesn't make sense at all. 58050 was built long after the dangers of Asbestos were known and indeed BR had already commenced Asbestos removal from stock by then.

DB have sold 66s before and have a surplus. If the price is right…

For Romic, wanting to hire out/sell on the 58s are useless - no maintenance or crew knowledge exists anywhere now. Unlike 66s.

Quite. Class 58s would be basket cases and it is why DB disposed of them to France and Spain. If they were of commercial value in the UK they would have returned to use. The only way 58050 would return to the UK would be via the deep pockets of someone with more money than sense. IIRC there are at least four 58s in England so it would surely be beneficial to invest in those.

Must be frustrating for the owner of 58023, once they get it back to the workshops at the Battlefield line, where there are 2 more 58s under overhaul, they can fix the the problem in time for another gala, and the Ivatt 10000 project will also benefit

I'm not sure what you mean about other heritage groups benefitting from the repair of 58023. Ivatt 10000 is based at Wirksworth, and is 58016 not still at Leicester LIP?

I was also advised 023 will be going back to Loughborough. Also, whilst the issue could continue in 1000 if they are to use the same radiator and cooler group set up, this is the time to design the issues out if they are, if not then the issue with 023 is largely irrelevant.

10000 is using the frames, cooler group, and various other bits from 58022.
The bogies and traction motors come from a 77, and I believe it is to use an alternator and rectifier from a 56.
The bodywork will be built from scratch.
The only authentic part will be the engine - one of the same batch the original pair came from. It, like most of the batch, was used as a standby generator (at a hospital or other place that needs a backup if the mains supply fails) Such generatirs are good value secondhand, having been barely used but maintained to a high standard (because you rarely need them, but when you do, you REALLY need them!)
