Your new clues, plus the fact that you are from the Greater Manchester area has made me think. There was a heavy rail station that closed that will be re-opened as a Metrolink station which these three letters will fit.

Therefore, I will hazard a guess at Dean Lane as my answer.

If correct, the next clue will be.....LPW

I just realized that as of the 29th, this thread will be five months old! Whilst Guess The UK Train Class has been my most ever succesful thread with 157 pages, this one has been going for the longest. I'm pleased its done so well, and whilst we're nowhere near the likes of 'Guess The Station,' it would be quite an achievement if we could get to six months, and thus 'Station Codes' would have a half birthday! :)
