You could say the same about the weekend LNER diversions via Carlisle but most still call there AFAIK .

Yes, but the LNER calls at Carlisle provide for faster connections to Motherwell, Glasgow and the West of Scotland than would be available by continuing to Edinburgh and then returning westwards. Not sure the same situation would apply to GWR at Milton Keynes.

I know this isn't necessarily covered in this thread but with the diversions between Christmas and New years what is the expected route of the riviera sleeper? Tia

In previous years the sleeper hasn't run between Christmas and New Year, I would suggest the same will occur this year.

Looking at RTT the last Sleepers are on 20/12/2026 and then nothing until 03/01/2027.
