I thought it might grow on me over time; but no. It really is bad; I have no idea how a professional design agency could come up with something like this.
It was done i house, ergo most definitely not professional.

I believe they have just tendered a bunch of items for GBR, including it's branding, however.

I have no idea how a professional design agency could come up with something like this.
Apparently this is who did it - their web-site shows their past work:

Apparently, some of his designs are intended to be polarising:

It was a brave move to give West Midlands Railway a livery like this. It created a fair bit of buzz on social media and in local press, some loved it, other [sic] hated it – which was exactly what I wanted. It means people took time to stop, absorb, think and have their preconceptions challenged. …
Other work includes Virgin Trains East Coast, LNER’s special liveries on the Azumas, 91150 (91105) for LNER for the National Railway Museum’s 50th anniversary, and the Europhoenix Class 91 livery - those parallelogram shapes and the extra, darkest background colour are not present on the standard Europhonenix livery.

And if you read that website, there is a rather large amount of seemingly claiming to do stuff in the headlines, when if you look at the detail it's actually someone else's work.

Over on this thread, the new TPE trains are being discussed.

The livery of the mock up is interesting - it appears to suggest that the first class line will be white..

It is over 5 years until these will be introduced into traffic, I think it's a bit early to be commenting on what the final livery will look like on these units.
I can imagine they will be many tweaks and alterations by then.

It will actually be 2034 apparently when these are introduced.

Not to remain off topic, but...
Wasn't there / isnt there plans for a Chiltern / GWR / others IEP style en-mass approach tender / order being formed for the very same BEMU trainsets / similar design?

That actually looks great IMO. The livery seems to means more to me when the trains are being actively built here in Derby rather than the livery applied to older units (most of which were uk built, I know)

All of the units that have been publicly liveried into the GBR scheme were built in Derby, 720s, 701, 387 and 357s? Only the as-yet unreleased Mk5A at Chiltern is not built in the UK or even Derby for that matter.

My point was that they're being built under the new company, showing commitment to British industry. Painting a 387 in the livery doesn't promote this in the same way that buying a Rover 25 doesn't support jobs at Longbridge.

I don't think this livery is ever going to grow on me, the more trains I see in it, the more it cements my dislike of the livery.
Flags just do not belong on trains.

What about the ScotRail livery ?
It’s usually well-liked, and the flag aspect of it is much more obvious than on the GBR livery…

Does anyone have any idea what Number Set that is behind, cannot find a picture that clearly states the carriage numbers.

The opposite side of the 68 has the flag facing the same direction, towards the number 1 end (Non-exhaust)

A white stripe has been applied for first class instead of yellow.

Ouch. The loco should have been left plain.

The coaches looked amazing in that depot shot, but the loco. Oh dear.

It has been done much, much more tastefully than this.

I think that looks incredible.

I disagree. Different tastes I guess.

Agreed, and TfW hasn't felt the need to incorporate the Welsh flag into it's livery at all.
To be fair, the Welsh flag has a far more garish selection of colours. They sort of did, other than the green which would have looked horrible.

Interesting. Has anyone seen evidence of these tenders on GOV.UK etc?

Would be interesting to see what’s asked for. Hopefully, it could be the start of the end for the current lot, livery & signage alike!

Although if we do have to keep the livery; it would be good for station signage to at least look like it belongs to the same organisation.

So they have, in this instance, chosen to have the Class 68 with the pattern in the opposite direction to on the carriages. The Class 68 has a blue end, as opposed to the black end shown on the new TransPennine Express units and on the Mark 5A DT, and the yellow ends on existing units. It also has no GBR logo and logo-type on the end, unlike the initially re-painted Class 357s (which had it in dark - I can’t tell for sure if it’s in black or the very dark base GBR blue), or the new TPE units, which have it in white on the black ends. The number on the end is very small - smaller than on the side. The number on the end appears to be a bit further in, like on the Class 357s, but appears to be bold, unlike the larger number on the side. The new TPE units have no numbers on the front, only on the sides. I do like the large logo, though - bold, and larger than that on Rail Blue, but not quite as perhaps overwhelming as that on Large Logo Blue. I feel like the base GBR blue is perhaps a bit too dark for my taste, and the contrast blue perhaps a bit too light - a single shade in between, but closer to the darker blue, would probably be more to my personal taste.

I guess the dotted nature of it, and the squarer angles, doesn’t really make it register as a flag as much to me. I don’t personally mind the GBR livery, though - I much prefer it to the plain white that I’ve been used to on Great Northern, c2c, and the former white and current grey Greater Anglia liveries.

Thanks for sharing. Please can you give the rest of the information, like where and when the train is pictured, who took the photos, whether this was an actual 'event', etc.?
By the picture I would say it's at Eastleigh while the train is working from there to Banbury empty stock.

Flags just do not belong on trains.

I would bet money that if you showed folk the new GBR livery with no context the majority folk would not realise it’s the union flag. Most folk would just assume it’s some sort of dynamic flash logo.

ScotRail SpotRail works rather well as it’s only at the end or when you two units joined together is when you really notice the Saltire.

Granted, it’s a lot more obvious in the standard class (non I7C) seats though!

I’ve just noticed based on the Mark 5A footage on Railcam that the carriages seem to alternate between whether the darker shade of blue or the lighter shade of blue is the main background shade, alternating on either side of the red flash, so each vehicle has more of 1 shade of blue, and less of the other. That means that the Class 68 must always run with the red flash in the opposite direction in order to match - the Class 68 has a small dark blue front, then the red flash, then the rest is mostly light blue, leading into the first carriage of the Mark 5A set, which is a bit light blue before the red flash, then mostly dark blue, then leading into the next carriage being a bit of dark blue, then the red flash, then mostly light blue, etc.. I haven’t noticed this with the GBR EMUs, probably because with them, they’re mirrored in the middle, so I guess they can’t be like that - I think they’re all dark blue at the cabs, and light blue in the middle for all of the carriages in between. Whereas looking back at the original IET render, it was dark blue, then light blue, then dark blue, then dark blue, then dark blue, then light blue, then dark blue.

The livery looks very smart but this reinforces my view that the red flag decal shouldn't be on intermediate carriages. Too busy. End vehicles only would be better.
