They will need off wire capability for the regular diversions via Castleford / Brighouse / Hebden Bridge / etc.
And as has been discussed, diversionary use does not usually make for a strong business case.

I suspect they run the numbers, but I doubt that changing the existing diesel bi modes into battery bi modes will work out favourably.

Exactly, so there won’t be a case spending money on eliminating the ‘off wire’ capability of the 802s by removing the engines.

No, leaving them as they are is by far the most likely outcome.

Would be interesting to see what a replacement of the 802s would be (I'd advocate for straight electrics), but that's a different question.

Has somebody got a date for when Standedge tunnel might be wired then?
Is being done as part of TRU, not sure of the exact timeline but Stalybridge - Huddersfield will be one of the last sections.
Is not part of the point of batteries that they might be able to leave out complicated bits like that?
Someone better tell Northern then since they're in the process of producing pure EMUs for operation over the Transpennine route.

Once the Transpennine upgrade is complete, will there be the need for those regular diversions?

It's good to provide them for shorter term engineering works and emergencies. The diesel abilities of the ECML 80x are very useful for such things. It also potentially reduces evacuation time in the event of a not-too-bad wires-down incident or a power outage - power off, pan removed, untangle things then drive it back to the nearest station at low speed, then you've got the passengers out of the way to spend time concentrating on getting the wires back up.

And perhaps more importantly for all the otherwise perfectly fine trains stuck in the isolated electrical section, as they don't need to wait for an OLE team to come out and reduce the isolation limits before they can start moving again.
