This thread is just a whippersnapper at a mere almost five years !.
The 701 thread (the cause of all this) has been going for over nine years.
From the aforementioned thread I can see the departure of 458530 must have been badly needed AND the imminent departure of 458533 (the last of the old guard) must be very necessary.
Then, maybe hard on the heels of this, the 458/4s will join the ranks of unwanted units. But that is discussed on another thread.

Probably not. They would have been a much better stopgap on SWR metro work than the half dozen or so 458/4s remaining, but I'm aware of the history, and hindsight is a wonderful thing.

So, all going well, tomorrow would be the best time to bring this thread to a close, as 458 533 is the last unit involved in the legacy metro fleet withdrawal plan.
I must say, this whole saga with the last two 458/5s being very long overdue their stay in Wimbledon reminds me of the last SN 455 at Stewarts Lane, the working to bring it to Newport kept getting cancelled for various reasons, that last one really did not want to die for a while!

Once 458533 leaves SWR then it is all off site so to speak. I wouldn't hold my breath for the scrap/re-use of 458/5s but onece the disposal of the last of the 455s has happened the thread might as well be closed. Although I have not seen much in the way of reports of the last of the 455s and their final cutting up.
Are there still some 455s left in South Wales ?.

Yes. 5713, 5735, 5738 and 5864 are all pretty much as withdrawn at Newport albeit quite mouldy , 5713 is in the worst shape out of that lot still on the rails as it's had one of its driving cars removed and scrapped , all the others on the rails are fully intact as withdrawn.
Newport also has various coaches of 5715 , 5718 and 5865 around the site in a partially scrapped state. these cars are off the rails without bogies and are quite battered up and deformed but still recognisable as 455 coaches.
None of these units off the rails survive fully.

As for last 455s in Newport, they have already been withdrawn and are no longer on SWR territory so that discussion should be covered in a separate thread as their fate after withdrawal is a different topic entirely.
However, there is no thread in place for those discussions yet, someone should probably get one started.
Incorrect, 458 533 was the last of the legacy metro fleet to be disposed of.
@bb21 I see no reason to keep this thread going, would be best to lock it given the above reasons and the whole purpose for this thread is now gone as of today.

My bold. I assume @Roger B is referring to disposal as not just disposed of by SWR but actually chopped up !.
Whether that next step is an essential part of this thread is open to debate. Seems pointless to have another thread started just for the next stage of these units' demise, especially if there are not many posts, BUT this thread has to end somewhere.
End of an era may I say - the very first sliding door trains on the SW division all gone (including vestiges of 508s).
I could include the 458s as early entrants to SWR BUT the 458/4s soldier on. I was about to say possibly yesterday was their last day for 458/4s in servce but a pair are sneaking out this afternoon. But that is on the other thread.

I made this thread for 455/456/458-5/707 withdrawals from SWR, and those are complete, so as far as I’m concerned the thread has run its course. 458/4 is a whole different kettle of fish.
Only incorrect if you insist on a particularly narrow definition of the word 'disposal' - which doesn't appear to be universally shared! It seems to me that 458 533 has merely been moved from one storage location to another. Peter Sarf is on the money, as ever.
If the consensus - including the view of this thread's creator - is that this thread's run its couse, then fine. I'm not bothered one way or another. I was just pointing out that it would be good if the disposal / shredding of remaining sets and odd cars could be recorded somewhere - just let me know where.
