Cross Country refusal to refund ticket fare

Could someone help me to get a refund please.

Last week, on 3 September, I tried to buy tickets through the Cross Country app for a return journey between Bristol and Paddington on the following day.

The app froze after I had approved my credit card payment of £132.50. The payment immediately appeared on my credit card app, as "pending". I did not receive the usual email confirming the ticket purchase, and the transaction did not appear on the "current" tab of the Cross Country app.

I immediately phoned the Cross Country ticket line, and was told that the payment would disappear, as no tickets had been issued. With this reassurance, I immediately bought replacement tickets on the phone for the same journey. I was also told that this was a common problem!

However, 2 days later my credit card app showed that I had been charged twice for the journey: the first payment for the frozen app transaction and the second for the phone transaction.

On phoning Cross Country again to request a refund, I was advised to email crosscountry@journeycall.com about a refund. Within minutes I received a blank refusal by email. Instead, I was advised to "get in touch with our customer relations team."

I'd be grateful for advice on how to pursue this. I have asked the credit card company for a refund, but this is subject to a 19 day delay before I hear back.

Has your card company confirmed it has been debited and not just pending?

When you say that you never got your money back, do you mean that you didn't do anything about being charged twice due to the conductor's mistake?

As you've paid by credit card and it's over £100 you can get your money back by a section 75 claim. But the first thing the credit card company will ask is what efforts you have made to get the money back from the retailer, so you should contact customer relations and keep records of all your interactions.

Sounds like one of the transactions is still pending and will drop off accordingly within a few days

Agree. This usually takes about a week.

If you log into your XC account and see if there is a transaction there for it that's probably the easiest way to know. If there is they've actually charged you and you need to pursue it. If not, it's just an authorisation and will usually disappear within 1-2 weeks.

Personally if I get a failure when buying something I do generally just log in and look if the transaction actually completed in that way. Sometimes it did and you could then retrieve the tickets that way, but usually it won't have done and there'll be nothing there, and if there isn't the retailer won't issue the claim for funds and so the authorisation will just go away in time.
