I passed my psychometrics for northern earlier in the year but unfortunately failed at the DMI for trainee train driver. This was for a depot closest to my address.

I applied for an alternative depot for the same role but again different depot and passed the application stage and was told I didn’t need to complete maki tests as they use your previous attempt if completed within the last 6 months.

I have just received and email to say they are withdrawing my application as I’ve interviewed for role with last 12 months.

I cannot see anywhere online where you are excluded or not able to re-apply, especially given this is for a complete different depot.

Anyone had any experience with this? Seems a bit fishy to me, the application window was originally 2 weeks and rapidly reduced to only 5 days, something seems off…

That’s unfortunate. I am going to assume you applied to the same company but a different depot, as your dmi would not affect application with a different TOC. If that’s the case, they are within their right to withdraw your application. The question is would your 6 months start from the initial outcome or the 2nd application withdrawal.

Hello Everyone

I sat my OPC tests for Chiltern the other day and rather frustratingly failed the WAVF (grey box test). It took me by surprise to be honest as I could have sworn I did well at this. Out of the three computer tests at the time I thought this one was the easiest. I know that my clumsy hand accidentally pressed the button on one occasion when repositioning, but I didn't think one accidental activation would be enough for a fail. I am certain that I got all of the occasions that the box turned black so maybe either I wasn't quick enough to press the button or fell asleep without realising! Maybe someone could shed some light to help me for if I get another go?

Whilst on the subject of failing, will I have to reapply for a TOC in the future to get another go or would Chiltern put me through again in 6 months time? I am guessing another application?

To help others my experience of the day was as follows:

Part one

Started off with Bourdon dots test. I found this pretty easy to be honest. I had practised 1 set of 5 sheets each day over the past week or two so felt pretty relaxed. Compared to any computer version of the test or the ones that I printed at home the OPC sheets seemed a bit clearer and easier to identify the 4 dots. I had previously heard about this on this forum so I can concur that this is the case. I think on average I completed around 11 lines on each test.

I think the next part was a memory test whereby you are given an A4 bit of paper with a passage of writing on. I won't go into exact detail, but mine was about a mechanical system on a train. The invigilators play an audio reading of this A4 bit of paper and then give you either 5 or 7 mins (cannot remember) to read and make notes if you wish. The timer starts after the audio reading so you get another couple of minutes whilst this happens. Personally, I found the audio annoying and distracting and would rather have had more time to read, but I guess everyone learns differently. The passage is pretty lengthy and in a lot of detail. Pick out the bits you think may turn into questions e.g. figures, names of components, locations and procedures. I remember thinking bloody hell there is a lot of detail in this, how on earth am I supposed to remember? After the time is up the invigilator takes away the A4 passage and any notes you have made. They make you wait a few minutes before allowing you 7 minutes to answer 18 questions. I had plenty of time left over which I used to go over the questions again. Although I was pretty nervous due to the level of detail I didn't find the questions very challenging and think I got most of them correct.

The next test was the telephone directory test. Compared to the practice materials I had on this I found this pretty straightforward. You have an A3 page of telephone numbers (mine was for plumbers) You need to circle each plumber which has 2 of the same symbols next to it. E.g. 2 circles, 2 squares etc. If the symbols are different ignore and move on. Compared to the How to Become (H2B) practice materials where you have to look up a spanner, cocktail glass etc and then find the correct area code, the OPC is much easier as the whole page is the trade you are looking for so you just need to concentrate on the symbols next to each one.

The next test was the counting tones test with a mixture of high and low tones. The theory is that you are in a lift with a broken panel and each low tone represents a floor change. Ignore the high tones and only count the low tones. The first tone will always be a low tone. Again this test was pretty simple to be honest, trust your instinct as you can start doubting yourself. You hear 5 sets of tones and the longest is around 20 seconds. Some are pretty short so really not difficult.

You then combine the above two tests, although it is much easier than it sounds. They remove the high tones so all you need to do is work through the directory marking the trades with double symbols whilst counting a tone. Again when practicing with H2B I had to do all this whilst filtering out the high tones so it was much more challenging so I was pleasantly surprised.

The final test of part 1 is the cables and dials test. Personally, I found this the most difficult from part one. The invigilator on the day read out the instructions which were pretty lengthy to be honest and threw me a little. The practice materials I had used were beneficial, but a bit easier than the actual test. The OPC also include numbers on the scale and a lot of the sectors will show the same colour and you have to prioritise the lowest number first. Once you get your head around it, it isn't that difficult, but I think I felt the pressure a bit as it was different to what I expected it to be. Whilst completing every now and then I had a mind fart and had to reset myself. I only completed 31 out of 50 in the 7mins you get but passed with no issues.

Part Two

After a break, you head back into the room and you have a special keyboard and laptop set up at your desk. The first test is the WAVF (Vigilance test - Grey Box test) which ended up being my downfall. Over a period of 30mins you have to look at the screen and click a green button every time the box changes to black. The grey box repeatedly flashes on the screen and every now and then will change to black. I have to say again compared to the H2B practice test the normal grey box is a darker shade of grey so it is easy throughout the test to think it is black certainly as fatigue kicks in. Trust your instincts though as it is very clear when it goes black, but you do have long periods where it remains grey. I won't go on too much about this as I failed it as specified above so wouldn't want to give out any bad advice.

The next part was the perception test. A traffic scene flicks on your screen for 1 second (crazily short time) you then need to select what it showed e.g. pedestrians, motor vehicles, peddle bikes, traffic lights etc I have to say this felt pretty hard. After you have done a few the images start blending into one and you start doubting what you saw. I remember thinking a pedestrian crossing was seen so that must mean a road sign etc.

The final part of part two is the 2 hand coordination test. I have to say I found this the most horrible experience of the day. I know a couple of people that have failed due to being too slow and so I felt the pressure to do it as quickly as possible. The controls are hypersensitive and despite playing some PS4 games in my time, felt really unnatural. The left stick controls left and right whereas the right controls up and down. You need to move a red ball from one end of a circuit to another. The circuits are pretty similar to the practice materials they send out where you need to do it with a pen in each hand. If I am honest I was convinced I had failed this part of the test. I tried to go way too quickly and constantly touched the line causing it to beep. I think you have about 10 circuits to complete and I definitely got better as I went along, but on every circuit, I had multiple beeps and one I went massively out of the circuit! I also finished about 1-2 minutes before the other 2 in the room.

After the series of computer tests, you have to wait outside whilst they look at the results. As above I was convinced I had failed the coordination test so it was no surprise when they called me in for feedback. To my amazement, I passed the coordination test and perception and failed the WAVF which I was convinced I had done well on.

So to conclude out of the 4 people that started the day, only 2 I believe went through to the MMI. One of the candidates didn't sit part one though due to previously passing this.

Anyway sorry for the long essay, but I hope some of you will find it useful. I found this forum exceptionally helpful with the process and I am just really frustrated that it seems to have come to an end for me for now anyway.

All the best

Rog
Hi mate,

When you done your TRP 2, How exactly did you find your way of prioritising in order?

I passed the build up assessments to this but come to when i took the TRP 2 i somehow couldn’t click with it. The practise mocks I was handed prior and the searches i found online I got pretty swiftly. I did mine for SWR

For the Group Bourdon test, is it fair to assume that they take the last set of dots you marked on each sheet as the point where you finished? I.e if I finish midway through a row, presumably I won't have any further missed sets of dots counted as an error on that row?

Hi all, does anyone know how long you have to wait to find out if you passed the assessment? I did mine almost a month ago in Croydon for GTR, still haven't heard whether I passed or failed!@

I guess it will be counted to the point you finished. Not too sure of it.

When did you sit your test if you don’t mind me asking?

I'm sitting it on Tuesday. Was just doing some practice tests and was wondering how it worked. I guess logically they have to stop counting at the last mark you made rather than at the end of the row

Nobody knows how it’s scored, so don’t overthink it. Follow the instructions and do your best, that’s it.

Just a query, what if everyone in the same group as you fails the Psychometrics tests, does the vacancy go back out or do they pick the best of the bunch even though they all failed?

I doubt anyone that fails would be put through. They have too many interests in the role to do that. I would assume when you have see a closed vacancy reopening, or people who’ve met the pass threshold for online assessment being sent invite after being told they won’t be progressed further, would be some of actions taken if everyone fails psychometric testing. Do they even have cases like that?

I recently sat one and there were only a few of us but we all failed it and were sent home.

Sorry to hear you all failed. For next time you will know what you need to work on. I think if they haven’t got the numbers in this situation, they will invite people who’ve met the threshold in the online assessment. I know someone who applied to GTR London Bridge December 2025. Didn’t hear anything until June 2026 and did psychometric testing in July 2026.

I heard back from my Croydon GTR assessments about a week or so after. Mine was in August. I have my DMI booked already in a few days time.

Hey everyone!

Just looking for any pointers/tips on how to go about assessment days/interviews for a career on the railway, as I've been applying for plenty of jobs on the railways and have had several assessment days/interviews but so far no luck :(

I've attended two assessment days for Northern so far and passed neither of them, they mention that they look for "competencies" but I'm not quite sure what these entail and what they're actually looking for. I noted that when they've called the people through that they're going to interview, it's normally been the quieter ones, although this is probably just my own observation.

Also done several virtual interviews for Avanti West Coast and I've always failed at that specific stage without feedback, again I'm not too sure what they specifically look for at this one. Granted the positions I was going for were in Crewe (on that 60 minute border for me) so just wondering if that was a reason potentially.

Tried applying for WMR, TfW and TPE as well, either too far (safety crit) or I didn't make it past the first stage. Also for anyone wondering I currently work in a trampoline/adventure park with a lot of customer-facing experience and a substantial element of H&S/risk management.

In terms of the assessment day, I think you need to strike a balance between making a clear contribution and not talking over people. Additionally, remember that the full day is an interview, so ensure you are helpful and keep a positive attitude even if the tasks are a bit daft. From my assessment day, quieter people did not progress through.

Hi all,

I've recently been invited to do a TDCT and was wondering if anyone has done one recently, and how did they find it?

I have been given some paper practice materials but unfortunately can't find any proper practice tests with audio and more realistic test conditions. Would like to be as well prepared as possible as this job role means a lot to me..cheers.

This is a train dispatch concentration test that I have been invited go do recently. It's for a customer service/dispatch role with TfW.

Hi, can anyone please advise me whether applicants for Maintenance Depot Driver roles with Northern have to complete the full Train Driver Psychometric?

Thanks

Sorry for disappearing, I ended up passing so thanks to anyone that helped or asked how I got on.

If anyone needs any help or anything like that, specially for your stage 2 as that’s what is the most fresh in my head send me a message and I will get back to you. I feel that I have a lot of useful bits of information that will put people at ease
Easy matey,
Sent you a message if you can give a bit of advice

Hi all

I have my Network Rail assessment day/interview this week. I recently passed all the OPC stuff and failed my DMI for WMR so sort of understand what the interview will be like.

Has anyone took the assessment day recently and can give me any feedback or advice on the day, what sort of questions they ask, what the group assessment entails etc? As I say I didn’t get through my DMI the feedback was although they could see I had the qualities needed I failed to go into detail and really show them, (I pretty much lost track of the STAR method half way through and started rambling lol) but this has made me twice as nervous for this day!

Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone

Got my enhanced psychometrics next month and the 1 that seems to have me flapping the most is the TEA-OCC. I’ve bought training software in terms of the tests from traindriverpsychometrics.co.uk, books from how2become for the dots and dials and the download for the joysticks to practice with an old Xbox controller. For the TEA-OCC a few people who I know who’ve recently done psycs have said they’ll tell you for example they want the very best restaurants and by very best this appears to be the “double symbol” but they’ve emphasised restaurants etc. so a couple have failed because when they’ve found the double symbol they’ve left it blank because it was for example a cafe or a deli etc and not a restaurant. Am I right in saying that you ignore all the extra information they fill you with and purely just look for the double symbols in this case. Is test 2 without the tones where they could ask you to look for an area code or & smbol or could they still do this on the 3rd test while your also counting the tones. Just trying to have my head round it as much as possible before going in for it

I did it last week and passed.

Part 1 of the test - a recording is played with low and high tones (low tone is always first). Each low tone represents an imaginary lift going up one floor. You are told to have your hands under the desk. At the end of the recording you are asked "which floor?" and you write the number of low tones down on paper. I used my fingers to count.

Part 2 - I had a large sheet with a list of plumbers (only plumbers, nothing else) and the task was to scan the entire sheet and circle where there were two identical symbols. Nothing else. I literally just scanned the symbols and ignored all other info.

Part 3 - this is a combination of parts 1 and 2. The difference is that only low tones are played. At the end of each recording you are asked "which floor?" and then the next recording begins. I used my dominant hand to scan and circle the matching symbols on the sheet and my other hand to count the tones.

Quite honestly there's no way to prepare for this and I've heard of slightly different variations of the exercise but the gist is the same. I also paid for a training website but didn't find it too useful because the format was different on the day. If it helps at all, I thought this was the test I didn't too well on (particularly part 3 towards the end when there were more than 10 tones) but I passed in the end.

Brilliant reply cheers. Do you always for example start on floor 0 or do they start you random floors each time? I didn’t realise part 3 was just 1 tone being played to count. The training login I have stills plays both. Also level 5 on the training software tones on test 1/3 are almost 2 tones per second. Is this a fair comparison?

No, you always start on floor 1. In other words the first tone you hear is number 1 and each subsequent low tone adds 1 to that number. I wouldn't focus on the lift thing too much, I think it's just there to try and distract you. Just think of it as the number of tones and you always start with 1, just as you would when counting anything else.

Regarding the speed, they definitely weren't as fast as in the software. They were mostly evenly spaced and some of the recordings would play a certain pattern, for example low/high/low/high, which makes you think the pattern will continue but then it goes low/low/high or high/high/low or something like that.

Brilliant cheers. So if your starting on floor 1 and you hear 5 countable tones for example did you write down 6? Or is that starting tone which is always a low tone, representing floor 1 and therefore ignore it?

If you hear 5 countable tones (low tones in part 1 or any tone in part 3), then you write down 5. Maybe the best way to think of it is you start on the ground floor and the first tone you hear takes you to the first floor.

Ahh right with you aye that makes perfect sense cheers. Just the thing with floors catching me off guard. If I’m starting on 1 and I hear 5 countable is it level 5 or 6 you’d write down

I think what I would say is - just ignore the whole lift thing. It's a fancy way of asking you to count.

First tone - 1
Second tone - 2
Third tone - 3

etc. etc.

At the end just write down how many you counted

Don't overthink it, it's one of the easier tests imo. Just pay attention and listen to the examiners instructions and you'll be fine.
