Presumably GBR are in the UIC, so it ought to be obligatory - in the recent past, the ones that used it were subsidiaries of mainland European state railways, who were.

Doesn't actually look that bad to be fair.

It seems to generally look better on shorter vehicles. On the early mockups the 20m EMU version looked loads better than the 26m IET version.

I still find the same pattern on every vehicle makes it jar a bit though, very few modern liveries have the exact same pattern on the end vehicles as the intermediates. The TPE livery is in a similar style (but different colours) and that uses different shapes on each vehicle to avoid that effect.

When Cross Country were a DB subsidiary and were even, for as period, lettered 'A DB Company" they didn't have yellow stripes either. Curious.

But Northern CAF trains (and others) have lengthy UIC numbers although the chances of confusion with similarly numbered coaches in mainland Europe must be slim.

Not too sure about that, XC Voyagers and 170s have always had the yellow line to indicate first class...

So it's not a DB-reluctant thing after all.

As an aside, it was curious how 170s and Voyagers received 'A DB Company' lettering high on the cove panel some time after DB took over but it disappeared again. Same with the NS logo on Abellio. Might have been connected with the change in status from franchisee though. Personally, I like to think DB removed their logo because they were ashamed of the association

The XC fleet also had "by Arriva" under the XC logos at one point, but that seems to have gone too.

Yes - but I thought that the 'DB' reference disappeared a while before that, though I can't remember exactly when.

I believe Jessup now works directly for LNER so may well have been involved in some way in the GBR livery.

Very good at taking credit for other peoples work that one! If he is involved goes some way to explaining why it’s not very good!

I thought the first class stripe was ingrained into the design (but that doesn't mean much these days).

I'm sure I recall someone saying it was a DfT directive for some reason for their franchised operations. No idea why.

I'd argue the 165s or 168s are the flagship of Chiltern rather than the MK5s. But then again not like they'd ever dare put the livery on a DMU first.

Once all the MK5s are in, I'd hope they be considered the flagship fleet over tatty old 165s.

The 168s are nice with a refurb but I wouldn't consider them flagship.

Which isn't that helpful given the numerous times they run in reverse formation despite what the platform indicators show.

If it's a standard, it's one that the standard owner (UIC ?) should be strict about, IMHO.

On the 387, there is a first class stripe, so you can probably expect to see it here. I also imagine a form of cycle door branding might be retained, but I don't know for sure yet. A few weeks and we'll know.

We don’t know for sure yet, but we’ll probably find out in not too long, on or before the 20th of September, when Chiltern is re-nationalised, because a photo of one of their Mark 5A sets, which runs with the Class 68s, re-liveried in GBR livery ready for that occasion has already leaked out, so presumably a Class 68 will also be re-liveried to match its coaching stock set, but we don’t know yet what the livery on locomotives will look like. But presumably locos will get the GBR livery. It’s possible that we might also see a Class 91 in the GBR livery just before then, too.

I would have preferred the red element of the livery to have been applied in straight horizontal way (similar perhaps to the blue stripe of the London Underground) to avoid these problems.

The flash will now have to be either omitted entirely on locos or applied on both ends, neither of which will look good.
