Yes, long story short, there is potentially another fleet cascade plan happening (cant say much more) so take this as a 'trial of 166s in reading' for a week

Thought I’d read rumours to that effect. Glad ti hear they’re giving Reading a chance to try a 166, after all, it’s not as if they’d lived there for 30 years up until not that long ago!!!!

The air cooling and wi-fi seem to be faulty on 216. Someone had been along with the window key while I was in Henley. Also it was not keeping time, we only just caught the 13:18 at Twyford.

The air cooling on all 166s is notoriously bad. Better on the Henley branch than Portsmouth - Cardiff!

It's a 166! Almost always faulty, and has been since they entered service back in NSE days.

Ironically the 165, designed for shorter journeys and built without air-conditioning, is now much cooler in hot weather.

And for this reason I dread the rumours about the 166s coming to back to Reading to replace the 165s being true!

I've come to prefer 165s over 166s on the North Downs and Reading to Basingstoke shuttles...

I've always preferred the 166s, nicer interior layout and better sound deadening - engine noise and vibration is noticeably less than in a 165

Do 165s have the luggage space of 166s? I distinctly remember the latter doing well for luggage racks, which was valuable when they did Oxford fasts and the North Downs line to Gatwick Airport. If so, 166s returning to the latter service will be good.

Probably helps that the current timetable doesn't use Paddington-Reading at its full potential; there's either a few extra minutes in the journey time compared to what is possible with an IET on electric, and/or a long wait at Reading on arrival (4-6 mins).

Lots of cancellations for Bristol based Turbo services today due to "more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time". I may believe that reasoning if it wasnt multiple times a week, at some point it should change to "the same number of trains as usual needing repairs at the same time".

This might be a reach but it may be because the 175s are failing more which means more 150s needed to cover which then means more 166s needed to cover the 150s in the Exeter area

Turbos will still be needed at Exeter; that's why some are based there. It's the 158s that will go to Bristol when and if the 175s can take there place.

Wasn't 165130 the depot Christmas tree until last December? Must be awfully unreliable.

165130 is currently out of traffic undergoing door modifications (I don’t know the technical details). I think this is the first unit in a fleet wide mod program.

Seven three car turbos in Devon today. Five out of Paignton with a three car 158 and a 4 car 150. One on Okehampton and one on Barnstaple. GWR must have had a lot of complaints re Saturday overcrowding.

There is one 3 car 175 working Newquay and two three car units coupled out doing mileage accumulation.
