Even if they suspect it had been happening for a while? As that is the case, so my mind goes to they will pursue
One consideration is whether a threshold exists for the number of flagged trips that would prompt SWR to escalate or investigate further. if the potential recovery of money is on the 3 figures or above the 4 figures?

I appreciate everyone's advice and for their understanding, it’s helped tremendously. I too was thinking about the same as above, if they believe the monetary value is above a certain threshold, surely they will pursue

Even if they did believe that they cannot pursue you for it without knowing exactly who travelled, and the only way they can establish that is for you to tell them.

They are pursuing you, by asking you to incriminate yourself, which is the only avenue they have of proving who travelled. All you need to do is not talk to them. And of course stop defrauding the railway. A life of crime is not for you if you are cooking your own mind over this.

Looks like you've learned your lesson from this close call. Assuming you've now stopped short-faring, you should get a new credit/debit card. Get a new email for ticketing. Use a new online booking site; the forum's is excellent, and you'll be helping fund it for others.

You'll then break most of the electronic links to you, and you can start again "clean".

As others have said, unless you have been stopped, there is nothing to take to court. Also, if the last offence was in April, the prosecution time limit of 6 months is also running down very quickly.

None of this is really necessary. As long as the OP travels with valid tickets the past history is of no use to the train company.

Without having been stopped the 6 months is irrelevant.

Always good to have a clean break, though not necessary, and in the very remote chance a prosecution was suggested, it's good for the OP to know there is a clock ticking and the threat is finite.

I don't think there have been any documented cases involving SWR, but if the debt of unpaid fares was large enough, might they contemplate a civil action for recovery? They could assert balance of probability that the person buying the suspect tickets was actually using them as well,

That is, essentially, what this thread was about, but they don't actually know who was even buying the tickets which is why the communication was by email. If anyone wants to take action through the civil courts it is essential to know who you are taking action against and to have a physical address for them.

I did reply to the first email, and sign it off with my full name, I did this before consulting the forum. It was:

Thank you for your email. I acknowledge receipt and would like to understand the matters raised.

Please could you provide further details of the inconsistencies identified in my ticket purchase history, including the journeys concerned, and advise me of the next steps?

I’ve just downloaded the app, didn’t know it existed!

Don't worry, it's still not enough.
