On the phonebook section an example would be circle all reputable plumbing businesses (determine reputable by the double symbol) are all business on that section plumbing businesses as there is no way to decipher between different businesses as it’s just business names ?

It's a common issue with the test, partly because a telephone/yellow pages directory is now a thing of the past and perhaps not that familiar to younger people. It does seem a problem that people taking the test don't realise business directories are grouped in trades (alphabetically).
I personally think each test in the psychometrics is well explained. I suppose it’s down to understanding if you struggle. I am not saying the tests are easy but they are designed to make you understand the method and use it accordingly. If you overthink or over complicate things, you panic and that’s the end of that. I’m pretty sure that you can concentrate on the symbols. I don’t remember making sure they were plumbing businesses when I did it. Hopefully someone else can confirm or deny

This was the same for me, just focused on the symbols only. At least for me the plumbing information was technically irrelevant and there to make sure you focus on the right stuff

Need a sanity check if thats ok?
After being told I'm out of the 45mins window, I asked for a screenshot/some kind of evidence as every iteration I put into google maps puts it at 45mins or less. They sent me this back....
Now, not sure if I'm missing something, but do two not say 45mins? Yes I know its exactly 45mins, but its still within "the rules", and google maps is always on the slower side of things anyway (its normally 35, maybe 40mins with two different route options depending on traffic etc). Nowhere do they state average/max time as the deciding factor, in which case you'd need to live within the Sheffield suburbs according to google maps? (Killamarsh would be the limit). Or am I just clutching at straws? Sadly it seems vacancies at donny never turn up or id be well within the limits

I work for Northern and have done for a long time and in a safety critical role for a number of years. I’ve had phone calls and emails with recruitment, who’ve spoke to Operations management, who have shown me the SMSP which is the document that shows the recruitment parameters for mainline drivers.
Your actual time is between 45 minutes and 1 hour 10 minutes.
So that is an average of 57 minutes commute time between all them routes.
Outside of the 45 minutes that 1000s of other applicants who will apply will be inside of.
I’ve been where you are and fellow members of staff too who have had to leave Northern because they are outside of the 45 minutes and don’t live closer to any other depots.

We know shifts don’t all start at 8am on a Monday morning but it’s just a filter to cutdown the amount of applicants isn’t it.
There will already be say 5000 people who apply that are inside of the 45 minute commute time of which only 2 or 3 will get a job on that specific recruitment drive.
Why would they accept people who live 45-60 minutes away when they can have someone who lives 20-30 mins away?
Fatigue is a huge focus on the railway too. Having a driver not being in control of a vehicle 1 hour less a day/ 5 hours a week may help to a certain degree when they are driving potentially 7/8 hours that day already.

That’s a great website with a lot of material on there that people applying for Northern would do well looking at.
A lot of the material is close to what Northern look for.
I have recently got through to the online assesment stage for a trainee driver role (I believe this is a MAKI style test), does anyone have any tips for this portion specifically? I have been using the TDF Psychometrics practice tests and I'm getting fairly inconsistent results.

It'd be nice if on the application they said it was the average time between the min/max google maps gives rather than just "within". Would filter out a lot of applications. I think it irks me more as last time it showed 46mins at Monday at 8am (and 44mins all other times) and they said they had to reject it due to being 46mins (rather than whatever the average is). So you'd assume they would use the same reasoning once its 45mins or under, guess not. Guess I need to move to the city centre to get the job
Hopefully something will come up at Doncaster, or another ToC that uses the 60mins rule rather than 45mins. Done a few mock tests and they aren’t a problem, its just getting through the wordy bit and the distance at the start.

The first test (perceptual speed) works fine, but the safety and resilience situational judgement tests do not; the multiple choice answers are 'stuck' and do not change from one question to the next, and the countdown timer does not start. I flagged to them on Friday morning and they said they would look into it, but still not working...

It’s definitely a pain that you’re right on the edge. Having said that. I’m not sure I’d fancy an 80 mile round trip either side of a 10 hour shift, so I can see why they have this as a sift method.
Good luck to you though, like you say, there’s always a chance Donny will start hiring if that’s better for you.

We have now placed the Northern-Style Maki Test under maintenance while we work through the issues you, and a small number of other customers, have recently raised.
We really do value this feedback. We have identified issues affecting elements of the situational judgement sections, including the way some answer options and timing functions are behaving, and we are currently reviewing both the assessment logic and scoring mechanics.
Rather than leave the assessment available while we investigate, we have taken it offline until we are satisfied that it is functioning correctly and providing the authentic assessment experience we intended.
Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. We apologise for the inconvenience and will provide an update once the necessary corrections and testing have been completed.
Still waiting for the link to be sent so I can complete it. There's basically no information. I've asked a friend at Northern to dig into it. If I get anything, I will post on here straight away

I completed the test this evening, my Northern portal has updated to ‘You have met the threshold for Trainee Train Driver assessment’.
That’s a positive after having my previous application fail at the first hurdle, just hoping my score is enough to actually make it through.
