Cheshire East to launch a feasibility study regarding the viability and deliverability of a new railway station in Leighton, North West Crewe.

The station would be 2-3 minutes north of Crewe, and have an hourly service on the Transport for Wales route between Crewe, Chester and Wrexham General

To seek Portfolio Holder endorsement of the Leighton Station Feasibility Study and approval to progress further work to progress the need, viability and deliverability of a new rail station, as part of a wider integrated transport solution for the Northwest Crewe/Leighton area. This evidence and the transport options recommended will be important evidence in shaping the early choices and policies of the Council’s next Local Plan. The report also seeks Portfolio Holder approval, subject to the outcome of this work, to progress a Leighton Station scheme to the next stage of development, including preparation of a Strategic Outline Case and engagement with rail industry partners.​

2-3 minutes from Crewe and an hourly service only? As much as I am not particularly familiar with the population distribution in Crewe, surely a light rail link to Crewe station makes far more sense?

It's an interesting choice, certainly.
One-off suburban stations on the edge of a large town are often of questionable value, as they can't justify the frequency needed to offer a viable service that can compete with local buses.
At the moment, the area around the station is poorly served by buses, with just the 85 running an hourly service (nothing evening or Sunday). But the reason for that is that there is sod all there.
The proposed location is on the wrong side of the bypass and there is basically nothing within walking distance. The closest thing is the Bentley factory, but the site is beyond the far end of an enormous car park and so wouldn't be a good place to walk from. Unless there is a major new housing development planned around that location, the only traffic it would generate would be as a park-and-ride station, but if it's only getting an hourly service then that is hardly going to pull in the punters. And I'm sure that passengers travelling long distances on TfW's services that they want to add the stop to will be suitably impressed at having an extra stop in the middle of nowhere to slow their journey down...

Depends what they're for. It's often not to get into the local town but rather to get to a larger, more significant destination further away. Hardly anyone, for instance, uses Bletchley station to travel to Milton Keynes Central - the destination is London.

In this case Chester might be a destination, or London changing at Crewe, but I suspect it'd need a direct Manchester service to be really popular.

Details from a Leighton Station Feasibility Study show Cheshire East Council is set to commit more funds to the idea.

The new passenger railway station at Leighton would provide users with an alternative stop to catch trains to Chester.

The study forecasts the overall cost of around £15-20 million and could see more than 250,000 passenger journeys from the new station if new housing plans for the area go through.

“The proposal responds to existing and potential housing growth to the west of Crewe and the council’s wider ambitions for sustainable transport, regeneration and inclusive economic growth.

“The early feasibility work has concluded that a new station at Leighton is operationally feasible, technically deliverable and capable of supporting a positive business case, subject to future housing delivery within the catchment area and refinement of costs at the next stage.

Yes, they treat the locals as mugs. Not suggesting it in this case, but property developers and local councils really do love their 'brown envelopes'.

In any event it shouldn't happen; the railway isn't a bus service. We have too many services already which call at as many stations as possible. GWR London to Penzance is a good example West of Plymouth.

250,000 sounds ambitious, to say the least – that would put it on a par with actual towns like Melton Mowbray, Larkhall, Stone and Alderley Edge – and double what Aylesbury Vale Parkway gets, which is serving a similar kind of purpose but with direct trains to London in about an hour.

The issue is that it isn't really planned to have direct trains anywhere useful e.g. Manchester - that will limit appeal (though Chester probably appeals more than Crewe).

AVP of course is getting busier and will get busier still when more housing is built around it and it becomes less of a "middle of field parkway" and more of an "Aylesbury North".

When matters such as that stated above is mentioned, I always think of the 750 home propoal by the Kilbride Group which would have been instrumental (if ever built, but was not) in the proposed reopening of Tavistock railway station.

Although Chester is not that big a town, so while it may be popular for leisure, as an employment destination it'll be limited. If people are working in Crewe they'll get a bus (same as you're Bletchley to MK example). Manchester would be the place to go, but from there I'd be astonished if anybody was bothering with getting an hourly train 1 stop to interchange instead of driving (/lift) to Crewe station directly.

Leighton Hospital is better served with 4 buses per hour in the morning: https://bustimes.org/stops/0600CR123?date=2026-08-26&time=06:33 but the hospital itself is a destination people need to get to, and it's a bit removed from the railway so not the best guide.

At the moment, it isn't. Largely because it doesn't actually exist yet. There is one small residential area that is within theoretical walking distance of the station site if a new path was to be built (which has an hourly bus running nearby), but apart from that it's surrounded by open fields.

The 52 and 53 buses (combined about 8 trips per day) actually go past the station site, unlike the 85 which gets close but at the end of the road (near the new Wetherspoons). If this station got built, I'd expect the Leighton Hospital - Leighton Station section to get a few more buses to serve the station, maybe a north and west Crewe circular serving all the new housing estates popping up around the hospital, with interchange at the Hospital to get to Crewe town, Nantwich and further.

One of the main problems with this site in particular is Pym's Lane. Bentley closed that off to the public a few years ago and now you need to do a big detour to get to the proposed station site from Minshull New Road/Badger Avenue, whether walking, cycling or driving. If Bentley allowed buses and pedestrians through, it would be a lot more appealing.

The bus stop you refer to here is nowhere near the proposed station.

4 buses per day (each way) appear to pass the proposed site (the 52 from Leighton Hospital to Nantwich and Wrenbury.

And the station would be in Woolstanwood, not Leighton.

No, the days of cash in brown envelopes are largely over. Other methods of influence have replaced all that. As a result, internal and external auditors can only do so much, but other 'eyes' are watching. There's a very prominent case in Liverpool at the moment, most are far less prominent.
