What’s the highest frequency of train service that has historically been scheduled through the core?

For a few years (from early 2010s until about 2017) it was 20tph through the central core, 5tph St James to South Shields, 5tph Airport to South Hylton, and then 10tph peak extras between Regent Centre/Monkseaton to Pelaw.

The March 1985 timetable (probably when the Metro service was its most intensive) shows a daytime service of 18 tph through the core. 6tph on the Green, Yellow and Red lines. The Red line being the Heworth to Benton shorts. Pelaw didn't open until later that year, Yellow and Red line trains running out-of-service to reverse at Pelaw.

At that time, only trains entering/leaving the depot started or terminated at Regent Centre; there wasn't a regular scheduled service starting/finishing there.

A 2014 timetable shows there were indeed 20 trains departing from Haymarket each way, in the hour between 17:00 and 18:00.

Is there any reasoning behind T&W Metro finishing so early? Working in Newcastle city centre next weekend and the last departure from Haymarket towards Sunderland is 23:14, and although I finish work at 2300 I still need to pack down and if I miss the Metro I will be stranded. So my only option is to take the car.

Always has finished just after 11pm. Indeed looking at the 1985 timetable, last trains to the coast from Monument were 2324 via Gosforth and 2330 via Wallsend (now 2340 and 2343 respectively), and 2315 to S. Shields (now 2324).
Historically, I suspect the reason last trains to south of the Tyne were earlier was due to the extra operating minutes to get them back to South Gosforth, which restricts engineering hours.
There is some indications that Nexus have asked Network Rail for later paths to/from Sunderland from December, with the last train to Sunderland from Monument potentially moving to around 2330.
It's also worth noting that Go NE 56 bus runs from Newcastle to Sunderland until 2am daily, and on weekdays a Go NE 50 bus connects from the 56 leaving Newcastle at 0022, connecting at Concord at 0102, providing a service for Boldon (and S. Shields)

It could be a chicken and egg situation, but whenever I have had to catch the Metro after 11.00 from Central Station, there have been very few if any people in my carriage and certainly rarely anyone else travelling to Callerton Parkway.

The last Sunderland train has always been relatively early, even in the days before Metro. The rest of the system doesn’t finish quite so early but the late trains only go as far as Pelaw- that avoids Network Rail.

Go North East run a night bus through to Sunderland on the 56 via Springwell and Concord so you wouldn’t be stranded.
