If this is indeed another social media related incident, like we saw in Ireland, then serious questions need to be ask with nothing being out of the question. If that meets shutting it down, then it needs shutting down. Risking death of innocents for clicks is grotesque and if that is the cause here then I’ll not be driving anywhere overnight on a fast road. Terrifying.

The reporting on the BBC says the other vehicle was one that had been the subject of a police pursuit after being spotted as suspicious. That doesn’t sound like driving for clicks.

I'm sure there were reports of another accident earlier this week featuring another motorist driving the wrong way along a dual carriageway causing a non-fatal accident.

Sounds like those two police officers were in the wrong place at the wrong time :(

Let’s hope we don’t get the grotesque celebration of the lives of the culprits like we did for the previous event in Ireland. The public don’t need to see that, and the culprits certainly don’t deserve to be respected in any way.

There is a feral population who think they run the show in this country who have no respect for the rule of law or societal norms. They need nipping in the bud by any means necessary.

Exactly and we seriously need to get some discipline back into this country and it should start in schools.

Further evidence gathered shows that at least one of the murderers had previous when it came to online content for clicks involving stolen vehicles. Although the murderers were chased earlier in the evening, the police cars which the murder victims died in was entirely unrelated and they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

No, S60 means the police can stop and search without suspicion.

Oh. There was me thinking they had that right anyway! I guess that explains why the S60 boundary was located away from A66. It seems,Ed to be focused around a residential area. Makes sense now.

The problem is that the proportion of the population who meet this description and cause trouble is essentially a rounding error in statistics, but still numerically significant enough to cause trouble.

We could be talking just 0.1-1% here, with the number prepared to go to this level of trouble even less than that, but in a population of ~70 million we are still talking a lot of people.

Only two people needed to exist with the twisted mind to fell the Sycamore Gap tree, again, that's not to say they should be condoned, but how do you neutralise that microscopically small proportion?

Nope. And they never should. To misquote a famous saying: those who would give up liberty for the benefit of safety end up with neither.

I wouldn't want to live in a society where people in authority were free to stop me from going about my daily business "because".

In my experience a lot of it is due to underinvestment in intervention in early life. I live in the city centre and regularly during the summer we get kids/young people congregating in the evenings, and way too regularly it turns into fighting or other anti-social behaviour and the police having to get involved. I've spoken with a few of them and the thing I hear most commonly as to why they're there is "we're bored".

They've started doing street soccer in the square on Friday evenings and the number of incidents is definitely lower than it used to be. Sometimes the police will send a few folk along to play and it's good to see the young people actually interacting with them in a positive manner, rather than running and scattering when they see the police car arriving. It's just a shame that we don't seem to want to spend on other similar initiatives and prefer to lock people up and have to deal with the consequences of crime.

Aye our local bobbies are actually pretty good at this. Don't get me wrong, they'll move people on for stuff, but ragging 125s on the self-made jumps on the land which has been disused for 40 years isn't something they're going to get worked up about. They'll warn them about drinking and smoking dope, compliment them on their riding, and chat about the bikes, then leave them to it.

Well. Nothing to hide, nothing to fear. But each to their own…

History says otherwise.

Edit: Not directly related but I happened to watch this earlier today. It's a good example of how authorities can abuse their powers to create "something to hide" out of nothing:
This video the creator explains how police can use the simple question "Where are you headed?" during a traffic stop to construct "reasonable suspicion" to investigate a driver for drunk driving, absent any actual evidence.

Yes, but the whole "nothing to hide, nothing to fear" argument isn't something one can say with a straight face when choosing to be anonymous on the Internet!

I really think feral youngsters have no concept of death.

I was involved in a smash that was not my fault in my early 20s and had a dead man's face right in front of me; this brought home the reality of my own mortality. This is not not like a pet dying or an elderley relative, but a wake up call that this happens in real life and what could happend to you.

My thoughts to all involved.

Indeed you are. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess a big part of informing that opinion is that you're not part of a minority or marginalised group which has historically been subject to stop and search for no other reason than being of that community.

When it comes to joyriders who cause terror and danger to others by driving at high speed on the wrong side of motorways/dual carriageways in an attempt to evade the Police, then some form of anti-surface missile would seem to be a good start! Presumably the military has something that could do the job.

My only objection to this is that innocents could easily be in the blast radius; otherwise it would be a cracking new series of Road Wars.

It seems there are a lot of AI-generated images circulating social media of the five feral teenagers, as well as "baloon" [sic] and fireworks displays planned for this week, the same grotesque way that it was in Ireland. Also one member of the family has said that the police are the "murderers" and will actively seek compensation! Oh and no, I won't post the images or quote their pages.

The police can stop and question you at any time without suspicion but equally you don't have to stop and answer their questions unless they actually arrest you. They can stop and search you only if they have reasonable grounds to suspect you are carrying something illegal like drugs, weapons or similar.

UK police have a lot of power obviously but generally speaking going about your day to day they can only really stop and ask you questions not search you.

Well lets put some CCTV up in your living room, after all nothing to hide nothing to fear ;)

Locking people up? I'm hearing that people, even violent criminals, are being released early because prisons don't have enough room or not enough staff. You have to try really hard to get yourself sent to prison and kept for your sentence these days.

And why is that? Because of the snowball effect of criminalising people early in life leading to them being stuck in a cycle that just results in more criminal activity over time.

Ultimately if you get off on posting videos of dangerous driving etc there's a fair argument that you're beyond saving anyway. In my town there is a big problem with balaclava'd teenagers stealing motorbikes, riding them dangerously around town and filming the whole process for social media.
They even respond aggressively on social media to people complaining about it on the "Spotted/nosey people" sites.

The prevailing view of the normal humans living in the town is certainly shifting towards hurting or killing them by taking direct action IE ramming them to prevent them from taking part in these activities now being seen to be a reasonable response.
