By chance, I caught Breedon No3 trundling along the Hope Cement branch today. But it wasn't whistling. Did they do something to them, as my recollection of them on Skegness summer trains was a distinct whistle?

As per this previous thread, the HNRC/Swietelsky Class 20s at Hope are fitted with silencers.

Other than to keep the enthusiast fraternity happy, why did it take over 50 years to fit them with silencers? (Not to mention the Class 40s)
I believe one of the local residents who lives next to the line complained(s) about the noise of locos on the branch, hence silencers.

No need, quite hard to fit as exhaust stacks very short, in order of about 6 inches from exit of turbo to roof. Only EE loco fitted with a silencer was a 73.
