There was always a queue at the Haymarket shop

There was, because you could only buy season tickets at a Nexus travel shop.

Now you can buy them online and the need for the travel shop has largely gone. I don't miss the days of having to queue up once a month to get a season ticket.

Wallsend, Jarrow, Hebburn and Felling are the worst stations imo.

I know others are mentioning other stations but they're mostly suburban stations in housing estates. These 4 are stations serving towns where people might want to actually go to and they're all extremely basic and haven't had a penny spent on them bar a lick of paint since opening.

They should be a gateway to the town, not some some outdated 1980's dark and unpleasant waiting area which makes it feel unsafe for women. All 4 badly need the same treatment the original poor DLR stations got imo.

Hard to say, as many stations were built VERY basic AND in deprived areas so the extremely basic nature of them is built in; my initial response was going to be Felling, but it is meant to be how it is….

The footbridge at Felling is so rusty (and me being on the heavy side) that I wonder it can hold my weight!

I mean - as a former user of Hebburn not sure what's wrong with it, same with Jarrow. It has cover, ticket machines and seats for the 5 minutes I tend to be waiting for...


Certainly more inviting and more cover than the recentley built Northumberland Line Stations for example.

Just think they should be a welcome to the towns they serve than what they are but they all have way too many blind spots which make it pretty unpleasant if you don't know what the area is like. Like picking out Hebburn that long enclosed dark tunnel down towards the South Shields platform is very grim imo. Get it opened up and get some light in there.

They weren’t made redundant.

But yes, it is wonderful. I can buy my season ticket at home in seconds rather than having to schlep up to Haymarket and spend my lunch hour standing in a queue. It was a right pain in the backside.

Same how it’s so much nicer I can buy a monthly or annual Stagecoach Megarider online rather than having to queue up in that newsagents on Northumberland Street and wait for the one person who could remember how to use the machine.

Yeah, the old system was a nuisance if you worked during the day. I think I only queued at the travel shop once before realising I could get my NR season ticket to Metro City Centre rather than just Newcastle. Then latterly it became easier to buy period tickets on Pop card from ticket machines

What an ideal opportunity lost for (young) people to learn customer care.

its been a bonus for me. Someone else I don’t ned to talk to. it’s also given me the opportunity to spend longer on the platforms enjoying the gaps in service and trying to find somewhere to park the car at the Stations. It also means that I can spend more time with my Nan and her neighbours helping them get their passes on line! Bless! You didn’t get tea and custard creams in the Nexus shops.
