730/2 Overhead luggage racks not for luggage

A few weeks ago a conductor on the train was making announcements that bags/luggage should only go in the racks or under seats and not to use the overhead racks except for coats (a moot point in the heat). Hadn’t heard it again since.

Today I am on a 730/2 and it has been adorned with dozens of stickers saying “don’t put luggage here” on the overhead racking.


I recall there being issues with the glass cracking on some racks during introduction, but that’s seemingly resolved.
Is it because it’s too easy to put a case on the bracket and have the item fall out?
Or maybe the suspension is hard enough to shake items out the racks?

Presumably, someone has been walloped on the head by falling luggage?

*I had to Google what a class 730 is. Good lord they’re ugly!

It isn't telling you not to put it on the rack. It's telling you not to put it on the sloped bracket as it will fall off if you do.

That specific spot you shouldn't put luggage on because of the beam connecting the two units, luggage either side of that is fine, it's just if you put anything on that beam it'll slide off.

Yes, it's a bit of stupid design, that the bracket/beam actually allows something to fit on top of it, rather than obstructing and stopping the placement where it is unsafe.

Lets hope the stickers are temporary and a physical obstructor is screwed there instead.

Back in July when leaving Crewe on a pair of 730/2s there was an announcement from the guard when we were pulling out of the station stating that large cases shouldn't be put in the overhead racks instead in the racks at the ends of the carriage due to instances in the past of the trains lurching and cases falling out of the racks and potentially injuring passengers.

When pulling out of Platform 11 and going over the points our train did in fact lurch so I could see the guards point for not wanting large cases in the rack.

Funny enough, I've noticed the Avanti 805/7 now have such a thing installed on the brackets holding the luggage racks up.....
