Yeah I wish there was a universal protocol for the apps to use which all charging companies would be obliged to use (even if they also have their own apps with dedicated features).
Well, you don't need any apps at all - you can just turn up and use a card on fast chargers.
Tesla Supercharging has been massively (and I mean massively) subsidised by the main business as a way of selling EVs.
Tesla don't make public profits just from their Supercharger network alone, but estimates suggest it remains profitable as a stand alone section of the overall business.
Tesla said it added over 3,800 net new Supercharging stalls, finishing the year with 8,182 stations and 77,682 connectors globally, YoY increases of 17% and 19% respectively.

The 10K that Tesla filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), along with its earnings notes, states that services and other revenue increased by 19%, “primarily” due to an increase in paid Supercharging sessions, non-warranty maintenance services, collision revenue, used vehicle sales volume and automotive insurance business revenue.

With specific reference to the complexity point I think that’s just ZapMap making a hash of things. It’s pretty clear on the Char.gy website:
Most people can understand peak and off peak, some will understand "shoulder" pricing. Most can't be bothered with trying to understand if they use Electroverse at x time until midnight it will cost y, then after midnight it will cost z. But if they use a contactless card iit will charge a connection fee, a lower rate until midnight, a higher rate after, and an idle fee if I stay for more than 4 hours. And yet another price if I use Zapmap. Then add in subscriptions which add yet another layer of complexity... It makes the whole thing seem like a shambles and is one of the major reasons I bought a Tesla and rarely venture far from the Supercharger network (once in fact for a test).

And as I say a lot of the time lamppost chargers are inactive so are costing the business money rather than earning a return on investment.
I don't know enough about the commercial realities, although you have explained them eloquently. It seems to Joe Average (me) that the infrastructure of a lamppost is already there, there can't be much of an upgrade required for such slow charging, and maintenance must be minimal compared to large charging hubs.

Depending on the detail of the installation, I wonder how many disputes there will be over kerbside charging facilities, - e.g.
will there be any restriction on IC vehicle parking by points?​
will residents get possessive about the point outside their property?​
will charger cables pose a safety hazard to the free flow of pedestrians?​

I'm sure it won't either, but from I've seen on my travels, the lamppost charging bays seem to remain empty unless being used. The ones I pass are marked "Electric Vehicles Only" in a bay though. And of course most people won't be charging every night, so I wonder if people who own EVs will be more understanding about availability than ICE drivers?

Of course, when we get the level of charging availability of Norway, with a charger in virtually every parking bay, then we won't have any of these concerns.

Ireland battery electric vehicles registered in July were almost double July 2025 (July is big sales month as Ireland has plate changes in Jan and July, not March and Sept as in UK)

9682 in July 2026 (4898 in July 2025)
7216 were private (rather than company etc)

26.12% were BEVs (battery electric)
24.59% hybrid petrol
14.45% PHEV plug in hybrid
20.39% petrol
12.45% diesel


So just a third of new cars were petrol or diesel

I think this claim has died down because there are lots of powerful people and investors wanting to support and fund data centres, which require lots of energy. Talking down the grid for EVs would encourage people to ask if dara centres can be powered effectively, which might then hinder planning and investment.

So I think that argument has mostly been dropped. There are still other anti EV tropes than be used.

I thought I'd post my recent experiences and outcomes as I think it may be interesting to some of you...

Previously, as a family we had a medium sized MG EV and a diesel estate. The diesel estate was written off in a low speed incident so it was time to search for a replacement.
My requirements for a car were simple:
  • Second hand rather than new as I prefer to buy outright rather than lease
  • Have three full size, equal seats in the back
  • Have light towing capacity for a bike trailer, trailer tent or the general purpose small trailer
  • Be able to have roof bars fitted for occasional roof box use
  • Be able to travel from home to the good mountain biking areas in Northern Ireland without recharging or refueling (About 120 miles round trip)

I thought I'd try to find a second EV that would fit the bill. Only two(ish) really came close. The MG5 EV looked good but it turns out the roof bars are cosmetic and MG specifically prohibit towbar installation as it upsets the balance of the car. The other option was the e-Berlingo (or Rifter / the Vauxhall one or the Toyota one). Whilst the e-Berlingo is nice to drive, is huge inside and it can support the limited towing I want, it's performance and range suffers horribly when you do tow. To the point it couldn't do the round trips I want and there are no chargers at the destination.
(As an aside, it's not unexpected there are no chargers in the very remote bits of Northern Ireland. For balance I should say there also aren't any petrol stations either. Some of these places are really remote with few people living there. That's why we go there as the mountain biking is great. The infrastructure costs to install high capacity EV charging would be huge and probably would never cover their costs. On the other hand, there are plenty of EV chargers in and around the towns and cities.)

Out of curiosity I had a look for newer, or ones above my own budget, EVs that could match my specific requirements. I saw there's the Maxxus EV pickup. Nice but that got an instant domestic veto :D I didn't really see anything else.

My conclusions are that there are great choices out there for small and medium sized EVs. We have one and it's great.
There aren't really any EV solutions for the larger family cars for 5 people (two parents and three large teenagers). I accept it's limited enough niche for ICE cars but it was a bit of frustrating discovering there weren't really any suitable options.

Oh well. I've found a nice 8 year old diesel MPV that matches all the requirements and is old enough that I won't mind too much when it gets the expected robust use. That's going to do for the next few years. Perhaps when it's time to replace this one my requirements will have changed and maybe we'll be looking at having two EVs. But for now we'll be keeping one EV and one diesel.

You didn't mention your budget. A KIA EV3 matches everything but the 3 equal size rear seats. Its big enough for 3 adults for a short journey, with a flat floor, but its a bit cosy for a longer journey. The EV5 is an inch wider. The EV9 is much bigger with 3 rows of seats, but more expensive.

I still think it's a massive shame the MG4 estate didn't happen. It would have fulfilled your requirements bar the rear seats (most cars don't have three the same size, that was an MPV thing and MPVs have sadly died out in favour of better looking but inferior SUVs). MG5 might be suitable though and can be had quite cheap, but avoid the ones that have been taxis, but having tried one the 4 is just a much better car - the 5 feels cheap and isn't very spacious for the driver, whereas the 4 feels almost premium despite being one of the cheaper EV family hatches. Carwow absolutely raved about it as offering absolutely amazing value in that segment, and was a rare "just go out and buy it now" verdict.

I find the e-Berlingo interesting but the range is just awful, probably because it has the aerodynamics of a brick. (Years ago I had a petrol Berlingo, it was very practical but was nicknamed "the flying brick", though to get it anything approximating to "flying" would take about half an hour).

It's gettlng a bit like one of the climbing forums where the Skoda Octavia Estate is the answer to any motorvehicular requirement, whatever it may be! :)

The Enyaq does look good though and I'm tempted by one. Though I wish Skoda did a nicer range of colours - at least MG have fixed that one on the 4 which was originally only offered in white, hi-vis orange and a nasty cheap looking sky blue, but now you can have red (which looks really good on that car) and a few others. On the Enyaq the most common mid-blue I think looks horrible, and dark grey is boring (though not as bad as that horrible undercoat grey people seem to like at the moment). Bring back the metallic reds, greens and navy blues!

Genuinely surprised at this. Loads out there that fit the bill, from Audi, BMW, Kia. Of course they may not be in the price range.

There will still be conflicts. At the moment, there are streets of terraced housing with continuous parking now meaning that some have to park some way from their homes. The more stressed EV drivers in those areas will not be pleased when the only available spaces (either near to their destination or even in the streets further away) are non-charger equipped whilst the chargers have IC vehicles of EVs not being charged. Also, would those who were using the chargers then move their vehicles, maybe in inclement weather?

But most people still have family sized cars with no hybrid, so will probably only achieve 130-140 miles for £23, so will need nearer £30 of fuel to do 170 miles.

For comparison, a BEV using overnight electricity at about 8-9p per kw, would need 40 kWh, or about £3.40 for 170 miles, roughly ninth the price.

Of course those with solar (maybe and home batteries) might be getting almost free electricity, so paying not even a £1 for those 170 miles.

The quoted £23 for 170 miles was in relation to lamppost charging. Those people who have access to free/cheap charging are probably already doing so. But if take up is to ramp up from its current levels then things like lamppost chargers have been suggested as the route to get more people onboard. But at those prices it's not looking quite so attractive.

Thanks to all for the various comments.

I agree the Berlingo has much of the artistic styling of a brick. :D But let's face it, if it's even on the consideration list then you've got other priorities!
But let me comment on one theme that runs through all the recommendations:

This is the problem one:

Almost all current cars, both EVs and ICEs, have two really nice rear seats and an armrest between them. In fact it seems that the further 'up market' you go, the seats on the left and right get nicer and centre location gets squeezed. That's great for four or OK for five and short, decent roads, trips. My family needs are for the seats to be as equal as possible to provide all three of the boys with a comfortable ride. If we're heading up to the Mournes or Sperrins the roads aren't great and whoever gets the armrest will not be happy. Similarly for the long haul trips (Belfast <--> Brighton) there's a good premium for comfortable seats for all.
The challenge of finding a suitable car like this has been the case for a long time and isn't an EV specific issue.

My suggestion to Mrs Toad to just leave behind the currently least favoured child so the rest of could travel in comfort got me an impressive withering look... :lol:

The problem is by the time you have 3 full width seats and some crash protection, you'll end up with something that is so wide, that hinged car doors won't open in a normal parking space. With sliding doors, then you can get a bit wider.

The middle seat for a KIA PV5 passenger van is a little narrower then the outer two:

It depends what you mean by "full width". Most 1990s-early 2000s MPVs had three equally sized seats in the back and non-sliding doors, e.g. the Renault Megane Scenic, the Fiat Multipla (yes, monstrous), the Citroen Xsara Picasso etc. Yes, they had slightly less crash protection but bringing it up to standard wouldn't add much width, we're not comparing it to a Series Land Rover or something. It's just that that style of car has gone out of fashion in favour of the SUV, which sacrifices practicality for style.

The Berlingo for instance is 1848mm wide excluding the mirrors and has three independent seats. The MG4 is 1836mm. 1.2cm is hardly going to prevent you opening the doors.

The design change is just because most cars carry 4, not 5, people, as that's the most common family size. Thus people largely prefer two wider comfortable seats with a fold down armrest with the option to squeeze a friend in the middle occasionally over the seats all being the same width but a bit narrower than if they weren't.

There are other options like going for a 7 seater and putting one of the kids in the boot (they probably consider that fun) but you'd obviously need to mitigate the loss of boot space with a roofbox or similar. But due to batteries often going under the boot floor there is a bit of a lack of 7 seater EVs so far. They exist but there aren't many of them.

Exactly my point, if you consider that EVs are very heavy and more annoying than their ICE counterparts - ie less boot space, more tyre wear through increased weight, inconvenient refueling. There is no justification to buy an EV

A run of the mill Polo will get 50mpg

I was in a council car park today and as I walked past the EV spaces a none EV drove in and parked up. It was then I noticed the recharging points have all been removed and a termination box installed. That suggests no demand for charging in that town centre car park, not what I would expect.

Lots of councils set up contracts to outsource the provision of EV charging, on the street and car parks. Contracts end and new companies come in, leading to situations where chargers are decommissioned or removed. They might also have been very old or unreliable. Perhaps they'll be replaced, or perhaps the council has chosen to do something else instead - like more lamp post chargers and concentrating on providing charging for people in residential areas.

Destination charging is important, but I have never felt the need to charge at my train station car park or shops because I'd argue that most people going into town (or to their train station) are doing a fairly short drive - and so I won't have dropped enough battery to need to charge up. If people are coming from a long way, perhaps to a shopping mall or an events venue/cinema/bowling etc, then perhaps you'll be more in need of a charge.

I do think there have been so many chargers installed in the last couple of years that many sites are struggling. Some because of price, sure, but also some because there are better places to charge.

Now, a charger at a hotel (where you are very likely to have come from a long way away) are places where destination chargers are a must, plus things like cottages for hire and so on.

But it costs more to use a card. It is like saying you can use a card in Tesco when it is almost always cheaper to use a discounted gift card from an employer or through a cashback site.

I think I have been clear enough that I think the current pricing models are purposefully and unnecessarily opaque.

Because heavy cars are not nice to drive? More body roll through corners not very dynamic
They have less range than an ICE, you cannot use heating in winter because it uses too much power
The boot space is reduced compared to ICE as the space is taken up by the big heavy batteries.

Heavy cars wear tyres and brakes more quickly, that's just physics. More weight on the tyre material and more car to stop which puts more strain on the brakes.

You are paying more money for a compromised car. There is not an EV I would willingly buy in the market right now even if I had the money for one. They are dull heavy uninspiring cars to drive. There are a few brand new ICE cars I would buy however.

This is before you get to slow charging, public chargers that are more expensive than petrol. There is literally zero reason for me to even consider EVs right now. The cars need to get a lot better. They only make sense as a second car if you live in a big house with a driveway and cheap home charging.

I am not against them in concept, my local bus route has converted to EVs and they are fantastic.

I know anecdotally someone who has just bought a used 3.0L Jaguar to replace their EV because it is cheaper to run and they're not paying leasing costs

Indeed, tyres on my Tesla (and I have a heavy right foot) last over 50,000 miles.

Maybe. But that's all about suspension set up and can afflict ICE cars. On fact EVs with the battery in the floor tend not to roll.

Complete and utter nonsense. My Tesla climate control is set to auto 20C all year round and I only ever touch on it to turn on fast defrost in winter. Heating/cooling uses about 5% maximum of the power required for driving.

Nope. Not my experience. Better road holding = less sliding on corners and no torque steer all adds up to less tyre wear

Nope. Tesla suprcharge maximum of 40p/kWh, which is about 8p/mile so about half the price of petrol. Charging at home less than 2p a mile.

You are paying more money for a compromised car. There is not an EV I would willingly buy in the market right now even if I had the money for one. They are dull heavy uninspiring cars to drive. There are a few brand new ICE cars I would buy however.

This is before you get to slow charging, public chargers that are more expensive than petrol. There is literally zero reason for me to even consider EVs right now. The cars need to get a lot better. They only make sense as a second car if you live in a big house with a driveway and cheap home charging.

I am not against them in concept, my local bus route has converted to EVs and they are fantastic.

I know anecdotally someone who has just bought a used 3.0L Jaguar to replace their EV because it is cheaper to run and they're not paying leasing costs
I do actually think it's important to have alternative views in discussions but those views have to be based on some kind of reality. Most of your post is pure bunkum.

I thought I'd try to find a second EV that would fit the bill. Only two(ish) really came close. The MG5 EV looked good but it turns out the roof bars are cosmetic and MG specifically prohibit towbar installation as it upsets the balance of the car.

Originally SEIC/MG did indeed state that the roof bars were cosmetic, but there was a bit of an uproar and they changed their tune. See e.g. https://www.mgevs.com/threads/mg5-compatible-roof-bars.2639/. I can't remember exactly what weight they're now rated for but it's not hopelessly low.

MG5 might be suitable though and can be had quite cheap, but avoid the ones that have been taxis, but having tried one the 4 is just a much better car - the 5 feels cheap and isn't very spacious for the driver

Speaking as an MG5 owner since late 2020 (one of the first off the boat!), it's undeniably a bit 'budget' in ambience, but at 6'2" I've never found it cramped as a driver.

I'll preface this by saying I own a 12 year old diesel, but I have driven more modern cars, both ICE and EV.

This hasn't been my experience, personally. Most of my driving is on country lanes so handling is usually very noticeable as well. I'm not sure that the latest and greatest EV will quite beat the latest and greatest ICE sports car, but 99.9% of the population aren't buying these.

This one I agree with. Unless you spend a huge sum of money on a very long range EV. It is why when I bought this diesel I didn't instead opt for a second-hand EV. As technology advances, this one will sort itself out over time though. In addition to that, not many people are regularly doing super long drives. I'm also of the opinion that people ought not to do such lengthy drives without rest breaks anyway. HGV drivers must take a 45 minute break every 4.5 hours. That's enough to do around 300mi, and 45m is plenty of time to get an EV back up to a decent charge. I have done 7h+ non-stop drives but in hindsight I'd call it irresponsible and I don't do them now. It is still a bit of an issue for me because I mainly drive to hyper rural places with sparse charging infra. That said, I would still consider a more expensive long range model.

Never heard an actual EV owner complain about this, and if the school drop-off/pick-up where I used to live was anything to go by, plenty of EV drivers managed to sit in their car in winter for 20 minutes with the heating and radio on just fine.
The boot space is reduced compared to ICE as the space is taken up by the big heavy batteries.
On some models, but there's also plenty of models where the boot space is retained or even improved compared to the equivalent ICE model. Funnily enough, the primary reason I bought the car I did was because of the superior boot space, especially compared to a lot of modern SUVs. I'd still consider an EV.
Heavy cars wear tyres and brakes more quickly, that's just physics. More weight on the tyre material and more car to stop which puts more strain on the brakes.
Well there's two sides to this. Yes, greater weight means more force required to stop/slow down, which affects both brakes and tyres. But EVs don't rely solely on traditional hydraulic braking, they also use regenerative braking, which in turn reduces wear on brakes. Given how long tyres and brakes last and how cheap they are, I can't imagine the cost difference over the course of say 100k miles or 10 years is really that significant in either direction.

Purely subjective, but some of the EVs I've driven have been great. Also to be perfectly honest, the majority of drivers in the UK are buying cars as utility vehicles to commute, go to the shops, or visit family and friends; they're less concerned about how rally the car feels on the back roads.

Similar to the range aspect, this is something which will improve over time. As LAs install more affordable slow chargers for overnight charging, and as competition drives down fast charging prices, and hopefully as grants are introduced for home charger installations, these will be less of a concern. The charging technology is only going to get better. And realistically we have to bear in mind that we've been perfecting ICEs for about a century, while mainstream EV adoption isn't even a decade old. The technology is in relative infancy compared to ICEs, and is improving at rapid rates. A simple example is the availability of chargers, which has grown exponentially (literally exponentially, not just using the word for emphasis) over the past decade.

Sounds like the issue there was leasing vs cash purchase. Though it does depend which Jag exactly!

Anecdotally, I know plenty of people who have EVs as their main or only cars. Some are travelling salespeople with a company car scheme Tesla; others are people who live on my street and the vast majority of their journeys are heading to work and back or doing their weekly food shop, for which the EV is way cheaper than an ICE to run.

I have found the opposite, because have heavy batteries very low down spread evenly under the floor, thus has a very low central centre of mass.

Engine blocks and gearboxes are usually mounted higher, so centre of mass is higher, allowing more pendulum effect and rolling

I was in a council car park today and as I walked past the EV spaces a none EV drove in and parked up. It was then I noticed the recharging points have all been removed and a termination box installed. That suggests no demand for charging in that town centre car park, not what I would expect.
Yes, a number have been decommissioned in short stay car parks, because they are old slow chargers, in the car park. Hardly anyone would do hour or two slow charge to add just 25-40 miles range.

These days people charge at home (if available), a rapid charge from say 25% to 70% if on a long journey, or slow long charge if staying away at a hotel etc, or at somewhere like park and ride or long stay car park if they are having long day out during a holiday. Not during short trip to a town centre

In many EVs, the overall architecture has the entire battery pack (the heaviest single component) occupying the space between the wheels, underneath the passenger compartment, and at or below the level of the wheel bearings. That has these impacts:
- better weight distribution (vs. an engine higher up at the front) and actually naturally LESS body roll
- no effect on the space available for the boot.

For many EV use cases, the number of times you have to visit a "fuel station" (i.e remote charger) is less than with an ICE. My current new car has covered 979 miles to press and has never visited one, and it's full.

When you do have to do so, you work it so that you are doing something else you were going to (have to) do anyway happens while it's refuelling, not separately. So doing can bring the net "wasted" time down to almost zero; less perhaps than watching your fuel tank fill up.

Brakes wear more slowly on EVs through relative lack of use.

Tyres don't (in my real-world experience) last any less time.

Oh, and without going into detail about how, my new car has, to press, cost me a shade over 0.5p/mile in fuel. That won't last beyond January but even if that cost TRIPLES........
