Roads melting in hot weather

In years gone by, it was fairly common to see or hear reports of roads "melting" in hot weather but i havent seen any during the present heatwaves. Has there been changes in the type of tarmac being used?

No. It’s still happening just as much. Several roads near me are suffering badly, some resurfaced only recently.

My guess is that this is typically gap-filler news for the summer slow-news season, but there has been plenty of other things to fill it up this yesr.

I saw a Youtube video a few days ago taken in Dubai. The road melting was so bad that layers were sticking to the car tiers almost in sheets. I have not seen it that bad in the UK but I have had stuff stick to the soles of my trainers this summer.

There was a patch of the A1M which was visibly melting during one of the previous heatwaves, enough that I was quite nervous driving over it. Sure enough, by the time I came home in the evening the section had been closed and was being worked on.

Because of a closure of the A1, l was on some minor roads near Grantham back in June at the end of the first heatwave this year and experienced this, with pieces of tarmac sticking to tyres and then falling off. The road was in a real bad state.
