There's a chance 222602 might enter service tonight with 1A02. 1M02 is running as 604 but being split at Crewe with another unit coming to do 1A02, and the other two are already allocated all day. There's a chance it'll just continue with 604 though.

I don't have a subscription so can't see the full article, but Rail are reporting that Lumo's 222s are in worse condition than expected on transfer
https://www.railmagazine.com/news/-...it-lumo-s-class-222s-on-stirling-euston-route
It doesn’t give much detail on the actual issues, but does mention the toilets issue (specifically the 0611 Euston -> Stirling on 7 Aug which had 0 of 5 toilets working and made national news because of it).

They also comment that these issues have arisen throughout the trains so far short time with Lumo, and that none of these issues were present at the time of introduction, with an Alstom spokesperson saying:

“Alstom has been working with Lumo to address a number of unprecedented faults on the operator's West Coast fleet, including replacing defective components, carrying out door repairs, investigating and stripping down the affected waste system, and completing tanking and checks to return toilets to service.

We recognise that this falls short of the standard customers should expect, particularly on long-distance services. Lumo and Alstom are reviewing the entire fleet position to reduce the risk of repeat failures, improve overnight servicing checks, and ensure toilet availability is restored and maintained wherever possible.”

They also mention that now all 5 units are in, they hope to send a unit at a time to Central Rivers for a deeper assessment and fix-up than what can be achieved at the moment.

One last thing they add on the end is that the unit that is stabled at Ferme Park overnight cannot have the usual maintenance like toilets getting drained, however they don’t actually say whether that’ll be investigated and fixed if possible, they kind of just state it as something to note.

This is what I think is said in the article, anyone else is free to have their take on it if they can access it of course though.

I posted here or in the EMR 222 thread that one of the ambassadors had told me about the condition of them, with smashed windows, torn up seats, missing TMS panels and outright missing toilets! Considering how appalling hitachi have been maintaining them with EMR it doesn't surprise me much, I imagine ScotRail will have fun sorting them out upon recieving them!

I imagine Alstom will be using words along the lines of "You've had some right cowboys in here" to Beacon when they're being prepared for service on Scotrail

It may be normal not to do much work on the toilets during a major refurbishment as the 390s only had new floor lino, & walls either spray painted or vinyled in theirs.

I’m booked into a Lumo service next week now, going from Nuneaton to Crewe to test out this new service (a little late to the party but oh well), what exactly should I be expecting out of this run especially seen as the 222s are my local intercity train (alongside the 810s I suppose) being from the east Mids, how do the units stack up with when EMR had them?

Literally the same except the shop’s closed, they have the miserable voice of Neil Rudd, and some carriages have firm FISA Lean seating.

Interesting snippet. Who operates Ferme Park depot ? Hitachi maybe ?
Assume it is based on what level of service Lumo have agreed with Hitachi for the 222s. Another factor might be that the 222 simply cannot get to the CET pad due to planned Azuma activity there.

I presume it’s Hitachi who operate the depot with all the 80X units that are sent there by LNER, Hull Trains and Lumo (East Coast), I also wonder if the only reason Lumo (West Coast) got to have a spot there was because of Lumo (East Coast) as you’d think somewhere like Wembley would be more ideal being on the WCML. If this were the case you could also ask why Lumo (West Coast) don’t get the same treatment as Lumo (East Coast) at the depot but I can’t really say much on that as I don’t know what kind of treatment Lumo (East Coast) get in Ferme Park.

Also, if it is Hitachi in Ferme Park then you’d also think they’d be able to take across some of their knowledge from maintaining the 222s at Etches for the last few years and take it down to Ferme Park (another reason why that may have been why Lumos units are maintained there not Wembley), but that then raises the question if they do have time with the units from Etches, why the poor maintenance at Ferme, surely it can’t be that full that there is simply no space, otherwise I doubt the 222s would’ve been accepted into Ferme Park in the first place?

I would expect Ferme Park only deal with fuelling and toilet tanking and maybe very minor repairs. Anything else and it has to wait til it gets to an Alstom depot. Presumably Willesden and Wembley are both full on nights as they are rather more obvious locations (and are Alstom depots).

A 222 going to Ferme Park isn't always guaranteed. For the unit that would, there's two paths for it out of Euston at the same time, one to Ferme and one to Wembley, and it seems to be that the Wembley one that gets activated over the other more of the time.

Lumo use Ferme Park because there is space there and they need to fuel and water there. However, Ferme Park feeds BN and there isn’t the time to go through Waterworks Washer, use the CET pad at the north end and return via the Bowes Park reverser and the Harringay flyover to wait to then go back to Euston via the Harringay curve.

Ferme Park gets quite full at night so sometimes the unit is fuelled but not watered, depending on what road it sits on. That is now being dealt with by ensuring it can be watered “in platform” at Euston if it is required to do so. The toilets are not in a great state (which Alstom are addressing, including parts modifications) but with, say, two out, you can easily run out of water in the remainder, which is what has been happening.

Ah ok thanks, how does this ‘watering’ actually take place in Euston, obviously it’s a very busy place so placing out hoses or whatnot along the platforms can’t be easy right, and are there points in the platform where the water can be hooked up or is it done by a mobile truck of some sort, just intrigued to know how an operation like that happens in such a busy station?

The Lumo Class 222s are based at Central Rivers for maintenance. Ferme Park, as detailed above, is just servicing.

The shop is closed on the MML as well in my experience. They just use it as a base for the trolley.

Glad Lumo have finally got the auto announcer working on them...

I remember my daily commutes from Loughborough to Leicester and back and most of the time, the PA system was as quiet as a mouse or badly crackled.

Being able to hear even half the announcement is an improvement!

At a major station there are usually watering points along the platform edge which you can lift up and then connect to the train.

Years ago, they tended to be situated between the platforms (except for 3rd rail stations or platforms) but that isn’t allowed now.

The infrastructure to do so is still notably present between Platforms 2 & 3 at Newcastle, for instance. Not sure when they were last used!

Still used in the 6’ between platforms 5&6 at Carlisle. I’ve also seen hoses across platform 3 watering a charter this year.

I was on 222601 on Wednesday from Crewe to Preston. The air con was not working in coaches A & B, making them unbearably hot. Most passengers moved to the other carriages making them pretty full. Also the engine was out on coach G, so it was operating on 5 engines. That said it seemed enough to keep time. I also have to say for a recently overhauled unit the interior ambience wasn’t great in my opinion.

Travelled between Lockerbie and Motherwell this evening, was better than I expected, especially given the EMR 222 woes. Signal reception was poor but the seats were comfortable and decent leg room. I'd say more than half the train alighted at Motherwell, some awaiting the Glasgow Central service behind.

Ssshhh - remember this Open Access is all about bringing the opportunities of Milton Keynes to the people of Greenfaulds and definitely not at all about the London Glasgow Trade
