I know for a fact they have been selling super off-peak returns with no seat reservations and a lot of people have those booked with no way of getting seat reservations now.

Surely they cannot turn people away who were able to buy (rather pricey) tickets in good faith on Sunday?

Once again the compulsory reservation brigade are ignorant of contract law and are happy to take subsidy but not provide a public service.

Sounds like a typical post-2020 UK TOC. The loctivists have a lot to answer for, there seem to be authoritarian solutions for everything now.

As you say, what if someone bought tickets and didn’t request a reservation? They have to honour that surely? Also if they purchased with flexibility that has to be honoured as far as reasonably possible, surely?

It’s the railways tactic of treating people like this that put me off rail travel increasingly and also undermine rail’s unique selling points.

It sounds like GWR are claiming they genuinely are, to the point of not allowing people on at Paddington. I doubt if this is going to go well...

Even if they try to enforce it at Paddington what's stopping someone travelling to Reading on another service and changing? (If reservations are enforced there should be standing room still).

Qnd then what about the intermediate stations where the services form the local services too (e.g. Swindon to Bristol parkway).

It seems like they have put a new post on X (here: https://x.com/GWRHelp/status/2088522885895721332) and reworded one of the previous statements (the bit in bold).

One assumes they will be allowed to stand on a later one and be given priority. Which is partly why they are probably being so strict with capacity.

Pre-covid, I went to a rugby match in Cardiff. Reservations were shown as mandatory on services between Paddington and Cardiff that day.

At Paddington, a queuing system was in operation. There were two queues - one for those with reservations and one for those without. Those with reservations were loaded first, then a limited number were allowed to board from the 'no reservation queue'.

It will be interesting to see what is happening at Paddington tomorrow.

Wembley Stadium has already been booked up with music concerts being performed by 'The Weeknd'. The Principality Stadium in Cardiff was one of the next biggest stadia available.

Given Cardiff has direct trains to both London and Manchester it probably is a good neutral venue convenient for both sets of fans. Birmingham is the only other city I could think of and you dont have as large a stadium there.

also not helped by the fact that Man City struggled to sell their allocation, so Arsenal have been given extra tickets!

One assumes GWR will have to ensure that every service runs as planned on this route!

So good luck to anyone wanting a Bristol or South West services, theres going to be cancellations on those for sure, since GWR never manage anything like a full service out of Paddington on a Sunday

The last train that would definitely get you to the match on time is the 11:45 (the 12:45 gets you to Cardiff 25 minutes before kick-off, but I doubt anyone is going to be risking that).

I also note there's a 17:09 additional to Paddington which is going to be empty if the match goes to penalties! Indeed, it's a bit tight even if it doesn't.

Maybe all the non football match passengers who couldn't get onboard the earlier departures, will now (necessarily) be using the next available 12:45, 13:45 or 14:45 trains out of Paddington.

Well, possibly, but I suspect that the number of people turning up without seat reservations (which most people do have) who aren't going to the match is not going to be enormous. I also don't believe that if someone turns up for the 08:33 with an Anytime ticket but without a seat reservation that GWR are going to say "sorry, come back in 7 hours" (which is probably why the statement has been altered).

I’m sure it would have been held back if penalties were needed.

And it’s not that tight as there is plenty of time for many of those in the South end of the stadium lower tiers to get to the station. And GWR would wait until it was at least reasonably full before leaving. No point running a 12 coach train half empty. (It actually left 4 mins late btw.)

I'd be interested to hear how this played out in the end?

I got to Paddington with plenty of time anticipating a bit of a free for all (mine was the 10:45). It was completely normal, got to my reserved seat and train was full with coach G unreserved and very few people standing. Pick-up only at Reading and only two people moaned about "those football fans" when getting on at Swindon.

And I got that 12-coach 17:09 train back (full and standing but not unbearably so) as I wanted to be home at a reasonable hour and have seen us lift that plate plenty of times already
