Avanti cancellations - is it always this bad?

I made my outward journey today, due to return tomorrow. My am train has been cancelled and I have been booked onto a train 1 hour earlier. The email says I can also get one of the two trains directly after the cancelled one.

It doesn't suit to get the earlier service, means getting up earlier! I'm fine to get the later one, can I do that and claim delay repay?

Yes.
Typical advice is
Your ticket is valid on one of the two Avanti West Coast services immediately before your booked train, or one of the two immediately after.
If you no longer wish to travel because your train's cancelled, you can request a full refund from where you bought your ticket.
If you still travelled but your train arrives 15 minutes late or more, you can claim compensation at delayrepay.avantiwestcoast.co.uk.
You claim delay repay against the original booked arrival time.

It’s a pain but probably a reasonable compromise - if arrival time at destination is important then you can go earlier, if not you can go later and claim delay repay. Not that long ago they only “allowed” travel on the next train after a cancellation.

Cancellations should now reduce/not be attributed to driver availability as a Rest day work deal has now been agreed. Prior to RDW being pulled previously, cancellations were few and far between due to a shortage of drivers.

Now I'm home I see there's a train a whole 12 minutes after my original booking, so I'll just get that, no need to change plans drastically.

Am I correct in saying Avanti drivers have now been offered a deal and ASLEF have recommended it and will once again sanction Rest Day Working?

Correct, three year RDW deal accepted by the Executive Committee and commenced 00:01 this morning. This year's pay award also agreed.

It's a pity that the 0800 EUS - Holyhead is terminating at Crewe today then "due to an issue with the train crew (TG)" The N Wales coast has been suffering badly from cancellations recently.

I imagine that due to the deal only just being reached, there won’t be as many volunteers as normal. Give it a few days and it should get back to normal. You are right though, the NW coast seems to suffer the most when these disputes occur

While things may get a bit better, the pool of people willing to do RDW in August is more limited than usual, so there may well be some cancellations still happening.

As long as the incoming train isn't late and the train it's supposed to connect with has gone.
Southern are dreadful at that and you will often have a train leave 15seconds before the other comes in and then you will have to wair 30-60 mins for the next one.

And Avanti are already announcing a list of cancellations on their JourneyCheck page for tomorrow (Saturday)

Service was a few minutes but picked up delays en route. 22 minutes in Glasgow. Not a problem but rarely travel on a on time Avanti service Northbound of late.
Oh that’s good to hear. Ironically yesterday right up until late afternoon all bar one Avanti service arrived into Glasgow on time.
