By contrast, GWR is quite good with this. Normally super off peak from Paddington are not valid after 1500. During the diversions via Chippenham, they were allowed on the 1512 to Swansea.
Similar with SWR with the reduced timetable west of Salisbury from next week, those holding super off-peak tickets to stations crewkerne - Exeter will be able to use the 18;23 Exeter train, whereas normally those tickets bar use on that particular service.

EMR announces start of restoration of timetable from 31 August
back to 92% of planned

No indication when remaining 8% will be restored
• EMR to take first step towards restoring its Intercity timetable following a period of improved service stability under the current temporary reduced timetable.
• Intercity services will increase from 87% to 92% of the planned timetable from Monday, 31 August.
• Reinstatement of key services for Sheffield and Nottingham, including eight weekday and four weekend services previously fully cancelled.
• EMR thanks customers for their patience while it continues to work with Hitachi Rail to improve fleet performance and reliability.
East Midlands Railway (EMR), operated by Transport UK, has announced plans to step up its Intercity timetable from Monday, 31 August, increasing the number of services it operates following recent train availability challenges.
The decision follows the implementation of a temporary reduced timetable on 20 July, which was introduced after the performance of Hitachi Rail's new Class 810 fleet, together with the maintenance requirements of EMR's existing Class 222 fleet, significantly impacted EMR's ability to run a consistent Intercity service for customers.
By aligning the timetable more closely with the number of trains currently available, EMR has achieved greater operational stability, reducing short-notice cancellations and delivering a more dependable service across the Midland Main Line.
While EMR acknowledges there is still further work to do with Hitachi Rail on fleet performance and reliability, an integrated action plan is now in place, with Hitachi's Global Executive Leadership team directly involved in supporting this work.
This increased timetable has been supported by the DfT Operator (DFTO), which has worked with EMR to explore all possible options for restoring the timetable and delivering this uplift.
From 31 August, EMR will increase its Intercity operations from 87% to 92% of its full planned timetable. The revised timetable has been carefully structured around the fleet currently available, allowing EMR to reinstate priority services while making changes to some other services to support a more reliable and resilient overall operation.
Key service reinstatements include:
Sheffield services: Reinstatement of five weekday services and three weekend services that were previously fully cancelled.
Nottingham services: Reinstatement of three weekday services and one weekend service that were previously fully cancelled.
Neil Grabham, Interim Managing Director at East Midlands Railway, said: "The reduced timetable we introduced on 20 July was a difficult but necessary step to ensure we could offer a consistent and reliable service while working through the Intercity fleet challenges with Hitachi Rail, Rock Rail and other partners.
"We are now seeing encouraging signs that the reduced timetable has delivered the stability we were aiming for, and while there is still more work ahead with Hitachi Rail, this stabilisation represents an important milestone.
“It allows us to take this positive step forward from 31 August, increasing our Intercity services to 92% of the full timetable and returning key trains to our Sheffield and Nottingham routes. To make this possible with the fleet currently available, we have carefully rebalanced the timetable, prioritising services where we know they are most important to our customers and communities.
"We know how vital these services are to the communities and regional economies we serve. I would like to thank our customers for their continued patience and understanding, as well as our frontline teams, who continue to work tirelessly to deliver excellent service."
Customers planning to travel on or after Monday, 31 August are advised to check their journey details in advance using national journey planners, the EMR website or the EMR app.
Train service changes are being fed into booking systems and journey planners from Thursday, 13 July.
Customers who have already booked a ticket and find that their EMR service is no longer running will be able to travel on either of the two services before or after the affected service. Customers who decide not to travel can request a full refund.

I'd be interested to know what makes them think the current mess will be largely fixed by then, as the only thing I can really think of is the fabled 221s coming in, but that seems very quick...

Or the clue is buried in middle of the news blurb
allowing EMR to reinstate priority services while making changes to some other services to support a more reliable and resilient overall operation.
Reinstating some, changes to others.
That sounds like PR speak for shortening or cancelling other trains

Of course what they consider a priority might not be for those booked on those other changes, especially as at the end they say

Why include that statement if they are not cutting new services that were previously running.

Very much a robbing Peter to pay Paul approach, stuff the customer.

I was thinking the exact thing, unless they have managed to fix some long term faults and units that have been out of service being returned to service?

222011 has recently made a comeback after being out of service for a few months. Sounds like it could be re-jigging of diagrams more than anything. There is some slack in some at the moment, and some services based on some others being doubles.

Sounds promising

Looks like beginning the end of the month the timetable will be brought back up to 92% capacity with help from the Ex-Avanti voyagers from Litchurch.

Considering they haven't yet been handed over and nobody's been trained on them yet, no

Looks like they intend to reduce services booked for 10 coaches to 5. This should free up extra trains but as a lot of services were frequently short formed I'm not to confident.

Great plan for a route that has had to withdraw seat reservations to reduce length of what are presumably the busiest trains.

From RTT, only two services were 10 coach today. One is the 16:32 to Sheffield, which I guess could be split to allow the 17:32 to be reinstated.

Similarly, the 19:02 was the other, and splitting this would allow the 19:32 to be reinstated.

I'd have thought a better bet would be to relax peak restrictions so you aren't cramming lots of people on to the last / first off peak and super-off peak services.

Of course, this also depends on them keeping enough 360s going that they don't need to call on 222s to cover there. Is there anything available cleared (or easily cleared) that they could get in to help fix that problem?

Both ran as 10 car as the rear sets on each had failed and needed dragging back to Derby. Only the front unit was unlocked on both journeys

I'm pretty sure when I checked this morning there was a single 10 coach diagram showing on RTT.

Were they failed completely, or still providing power? Neither lost that much time.

Yes. Suspending peak restrictions is a sensible idea. It could also be spun as a passenger benefit too.
Nothing to date from this debacle has been of any benefit to passengers that I can think of. That would be a definite one.

A lot of trains have suffered with HVAC issues so they could have been related to that

That sounds very impressive doesn't it - all the issues should be resolved in no time!

I can imagine a lot of Japanese engineers are being flown to the uk to assist with the 810s.

No confirmation that the 221's are being drafted in. Sounds like the emphasis is changing the maintenance regime for the 222's to get them in better working order to support the core timetable - alongside trying to cure the Class 810 faults.

Yes, the only current 10 car service is the 1602 STP-SHF. This is required to form 2x services back south from Sheffield. However from 31st August, this is no longer the case, so it will be a single. I don't think there will be any doubles on a weekday from 31st August.

My bold
Could the underlying reason be to make it easier to introduce more 810s into service? Avoids the problem of ensuring that allocation to a diagram doesn't involve coupling to another diagram being worked by the other class .

shockingly bad that ALL trains now only 5 cars regardless of crowding, to think before we had 7 car or 10 car doubles on peak services, what a way to run a railway..

Been discussed many times, a 5 car 810 has a very similar amount of seats to want a 7 car set had.

Obviously a down grade on a 10 car.

I suspect they are wondering why the executives of 7 years ago accepted an order to try and shoehorn a working 26m vehicle into a 24m vehicles, when there was a chance of no follow on orders for 24m vehicles.

I wonder if the are actually fixable, or if squashing everything in to shorter length means access is so poor and cramped they are going to a permanent maintenance liability, and getting them upto expected reliability standard will never happen.

Of course a 1000+ day delay, huge cost of developing trains that are non-standard and a maintenance liability, is looking like a bad investment compared to moving some point work and adding 28m to 4 platforms at St Pancras (and some other minor platform extensions elsewhere) and having ordered tried and tested (that work) 26m versions instead.

Whilst plan only restores upto 92% there remains lots of uncertainty if they can actually get upto 100%, and if it eventually happens how many months/years will it be. Short term part fix, is not a strategy

Are there any stats to support the claim that the service was indeed stabilised?
