East Midlands railways industrial action

Doesn't look like there's any solution to the dispute in the near future.
The stated aim of the Union is having the 810s taken out of service. That would solve the dispute, at the cost of not being able to run the full timetable. EMR don't seem to agree with that course of action.

As they don’t have enough trains without the 810s, then they’d need less staff…

I would suspect human error in control updating the wrong service rather than a plan to run a 158 to St Pancras. Whilst it would be theoretically possible it would almost certainly require preplanning as the mainline crews will not be cleared on 158s.
Not that difficult. A fair amount of Derby drivers also sign 158/170. There's a mixed link that does some Matlock and Crewe work amongst London so not really an issue with drivers. From a guards perspective it would just additionally need a spare regional guard to work the train with a TM holding route knowledge.

The bigger issue is that of timings. It's unlikely a 158 would be used when there's the option of a 170 with their higher top speed.

Don't we only have 4 810s operating at current 6 221s will be coming soon if the union keep striking and EMR are forced to remove the 810s then thats what would cover

The East Coast closure suggests alternative for some journeys via EMR Inter City. I looked at National Rail Enquiries for details of that service and saw that, under 'cleared disruptions' it states that the industrial action no longer applies. Looking on RTT there are no cancellations (except the odd one for variation).

Surprised there's been no mention on this thread.

Thanks, sorry, I thought it was all week-end; but National Rail Enquiries do say 'East Midlands Railway services are no longer impacted by industrial action' (quote from drop down under 'recently cleared disruptions'). Strictly true in relation to it's no longer Saturday but slightly misleading in my opinion.

Is the strike a one-off, or are they likely to do more Saturdays? (Or even extend it further...)

We are planning a Eurostar journey in about a month and could do with knowing if that's sensible, or if our chances of getting from Chesterfield to St Pancras are small.

Further strikes by the RMT are expected in the near future. Once this has been announced formally, details will be provided.

RMT union to strike on Sunday 30 August, Monday 31 August, Wednesday 16 September and Thursday 17 September

The RMT union has announced strike action on Sunday 30 August, Monday 31 August, Wednesday 16 September and Thursday 17 September 2026.
EMR is currently assessing the impact of this industrial action on its services and will publish details of the services it will operate on its Intercity and Connect routes on the affected days as soon as possible. EMR Regional services will not be affected by the strike action.
EMR recognises the significant disruption this will cause to customers’ plans over the August Bank Holiday and understands how frustrating this news will be for its customers, particularly following the three Saturdays targeted by RMT strikes earlier this month.
EMR continues to have constructive discussions with the RMT and has met with the union six times as it works towards resolving the issues at the heart of this dispute.
At the same time, EMR is working closely with Hitachi Rail to ensure that concerns are being properly addressed.
Philippa Cresswell, Customer Experience Director at East Midlands Railway, said: “We understand how important it is for our customers to have certainty about their travel plans and recognise the uncertainty and disruption this strike action will cause, particularly over the August Bank Holiday.
“Our teams are currently working through the detail of our service plan and assessing what services we will be able to operate on the affected days. We will share further information with our customers as soon as it is available and continue to provide updates through our website, stations and social media channels.”

Oh dear. I am travelling up to Melton Mowbray on the 30th, let's hope they manage to run some sort of service as the east coast line has engineering work and RRBs that weekend.

Only a guess but if they repeat the timetable of the recent action it will be no service before 07:00 and nothing after 19:00. WCML might be of use to you with a change at Nuneaton for Melton.

Is there anything 'special' about the 16th & 17th September, or is it just shifting attention to affecting more business travellers & therefore higher impact perhaps?

Don't worry I'm sure all the safety concerns will magically disappear if the staff get a bumper pay rise, that is usually the case with the RMT.

16th & 17th September seem to be an odd pair of days to pick rather than going after the weekend leisure travellers

Maybe they felt that the needed a bigger impact to put more pressure on EMT, so far the Saturdays have just been annoying for the leisure travellers who could probably replan trips more easily

Is the point at stake in this dispute still about EMR's refusal to stand down the 810 fleet from service? Having tried strike action and seen no movement, I fail to see how further strike action is going to change that.

It would be a much clearer position if they actually refused to work 810s, but the logic of working them one day, and then refusing work on the whole 222/360/810 fleet the next somehow doesn't make the point.

EMR might be playing 4D chess and it may just proove successful. Keep trying the 810's in service, keep RMT striking, keep making EMR an unappealling travel option - even to the average punter, passenger levels drop, overcrowding dissapears. Hey look we did a good thing!

XC take note ;)

And where is it stated by RMT that this dispute is related to pay ?
I know some on this forum believe that money(pay/salary) solves all problems, but some on the railway are a bit more savvy & have principles that aren’t dictated by renumeration/

Maybe a stretch but the 16th and 17th are around just before when freshers week would be for the universities in Nottingham / Sheffield so would impact people moving in.

XC have been adopting this tactic for years, especially at weekends…!

This entire industrial action again lowers any dwindling faith I had in the RMT. It makes no sense other than to be desruptive. If the trains have faults they are either serious or minor. If they are minor inconveniences (which seems to be supported by Aslef who are not striking) then just carry on and go to work.

If they are major and potentially dangerous then why only strike one day a week. If they are so concerned with members safety then surely they should be striking every day of the week till its fixed as lives are at risk.

Sadly I just think its unions taking advantage of teething problems and striking because they like a day off.

I would love to be proved wrong.

The 'action short of a strike' is apparently an instruction "to refuse to work a Class 810 trains if a list of faults including lack of air-con, door faults and non-working toilets continue" but I am not sure how that happens in practice.

See https://www.rmt.org.uk/news/further-strike-action-called-on-east-midlands-railway/

The concept underlying the strike action doesn't appear focused on a properly measurable outcome, as if the RMT "is demanding that whilst these faults exist and until these trains are shown to be operating properly, they should be taken out of service" I'm not sure how proper operation is defined based solely on test operations.

All those things have been common on class 222s for many months, but they seem happy to work them in that condition. I'm afraid it's difficult to see this as anything other than RMT trying to show they've got some strength, rather than any real concerns for the safety of their members or the travelling public.

Anyone know if someone who had an advance ticket from Matlock to London on Sunday would be able to drive to Stafford and get on an Avanti train there instead? i.e. would the ticket still be valid?
