As posted elsewhere, when somebody questioned on Facebook where the class 31 fits in to the NSE theme, the Bluebell’s SM team have now said it was never meant to be exclusively NSE… which is quite a step down from what was originally advertised.

I can only assume some planned guests are now unavailable.
Although 31108 never had any NSE connections, several 31s were in the NKJS (NSE Infrastructure North) and NKJW (NSE Infrastructure North weekend) pools during 1993 and early 1994. As far as I am aware, the only 31s from those pools which still exist are 31190 and 31327

Yes, I agree and remember seeing some of the 31s from those twi pools. 31s also had runs to collect DMU cars from Wolverton Works, freshly-outshopped in NSE livery. I have a 1988 photo of a blue 31 bringing a rake of ex-works 108/115/121 cars south, into Bletchley.

I know there lots of talk of unit 1753 on the move in the southeast, Is there any chance that the thumper at Burton could possibly attend the gala?

It's seeming like quite an exciting event!

I'm going to guess that there'll be the Thumper and then the MLVs+EPB on Shuttles turning back at HK, then two sets of mk1s (green and crimson lake) on full-line trips. That said, there could be a smaller set of (potentially) older stock for the 03, 73, and maybe the 09 if that's repaired.

It could be that each day takes a different timetabling theme. Friday is almost always full line trains as lots of people use the mainline connection at East Grinstead. Sunday is when double headers tend to really come to play.

I think the 09 was targeted to be back for next year, but will have to confirm that.

If the MHR gala a few years ago is anything to go by, expect one full liner per day and the equivalent of brake can rides to the sidings the rest of the day. The batteries in the MLVs are not built for sustained running for long periods of time.

Still absolutely worth visiting for!

How exactly were the MLV batteries charged at the MHR?

The Mid Hants is a different kind of line to the Bluebell with different grades, so we’ll have to wait and see what they’re doing when the timetable gets released (hopefully in the near future).

:lol:I've only had haulage once (post 59). Their operational range and speed on batteries was - ahem - definitely not befitting of the word loconotive.

At least there’s a lot of downhill running on the Bluebell. Maybe they’ve worked out a way of fitting regen to them!

Could the preserved two car networker unit potentially have been able to make an appearance?
What would be able to Haul it while providing full power and controlling the doors though. I don't think anything has the ability to do that with networkers afaik.

These points are totally understandable, maybe just as a static piece?

A big issue with getting modern stuff in is will it fit through Oxted Tunnel?
AFAIK, Mk3s (except I think the ones with short link couplers) aren't passed for the tunnel. Hence the preserved 455 can't come (but the Inspiration Train could).

I don't think modern stuff is necessarily an issue with tunnel. I.e. Class 377, 700 and 66s etc can get through.

The problem with the Class 466 is that its a lot of effort and money for just a static item. With the steam ban, the Bluebell really don't have the luxury of cash to splash l f frivolous things...

Are you sure? Class 455 cars are 20metres long, compared with hauled stock or HST Mark 3s at 23 metres, so throwover will be less on curves

The end on a Mk3 derived EMU is more square than the end on a Mk3 carriage.

From what I understand, the 455 carriages run the risk of hitting the train on the other line while going round the bend.

So, not very NSE:

A Class 60 is coming to the Bluebell Railway!

We're delighted to announce that Class 60 No. 60028 will be attending our 2026 Diesel Gala, taking place from 4–6 September.

Our sincere thanks go to DC Rail, part of the Cappagh Group of Companies, for kindly allowing this extra special guest to visit the Bluebell Railway.

This appearance promises to be a landmark occasion. We believe 60028 will become the first Class 60 ever to reach East Grinstead via the Oxted Line, and, more significantly, the first Class 60 to visit and operate at the Bluebell Railway.

Built between 1989 and 1993 for heavy freight duties, the Class 60 is renowned for its impressive power and distinctive presence, making this a rare opportunity to see one in action on a heritage railway.

The line-up for the 2026 Diesel Gala now includes:

Class 60 No. 60028
Class 50 No. 50026 'Indomitable'
Class 03 No. 03179 'Clive'
Class 31 No. 31108
Class 33 No. 33108
Class 73/1 No. 73128 'The Kent & East Sussex Railway'
4 Car Hastings Diesel Electric Multiple Unit No. 1001 'Mountfield' & 'Hastings'
Motor Luggage Vans 9001 & 9002
2EPB No. 5759
Class 73/1 E6040 'The Bluebell Railway'

...and we're still not finished! We have even more announcements to come before what is shaping up to be one of the biggest and most varied Diesel Galas in the Bluebell Railway's history.

️ Book your tickets today and save by purchasing in advance via our website. Don't miss your chance to be part of this historic weekend! https://www.bluebell-railway.com/special/diesel-gala/

Speaking from my own personal viewpoint on the whole “X engine isn’t NSE” argument, whilst I can understand what people are saying I think what the railway announced has been misinterpreted.

The initial social media post about the event said:
We’re excited to confirm that the Bluebell Railway Diesel Gala 2026 will take place from 4th–6th September 2026 — and it’s set to be something truly special.

As part of the gala, we will proudly celebrate the 40th anniversary of Network SouthEast (NSE) — marking four decades since the launch of this bold, colourful, and much-loved era of British railway history. Network SouthEast transformed commuter and regional rail travel across London and the South East, and its distinctive red, white and blue branding remains iconic to this day. NSE 40 will form a fantastic addition to the 2026 Diesel Gala, with plans already underway to ensure the anniversary is celebrated in fitting style.
Which indicates that the celebration of 40 years of NSE will be included as part of the gala, rather than the sole focus of the gala.

The post does later say this:
Together, we aim to showcase and honour the legacy of Network SouthEast through locomotives from the era, rolling stock, displays, and carefully curated elements that capture the spirit of the era.
With a 33, 50, 2 73s, the 4 car Hastings Unit, 2 MLVs and a 2-EPB, plus the IoW 03, I would say that is a very good list of NSE stock, with most of that list being in a livery typical of the period too. Some of the Bluebell Mk1 stock planned to be in use at the gala actually ran in NSE service, and whilst it’s not practical to repaint the fleet (despite what some on Facebook seem to be repeatedly suggesting), Mk1 stock could still be found on some of the loco hauled services.

Of course everyone is welcome to form their own conclusions and opinions from this, but nowhere does it say “This gala will only feature engines and stock that ran between 1986 and 1994 under NSE”.

As I’m sure many will know, organising and running a gala takes a lot of time and effort from almost every department on the railway, from the gala planning committees and the commercial department who start the gala planning/organisation process right down the volunteers on the day who run the services for the passengers. Not everything that is on a “wishlist” to attend the gala will be able to, and that could be for a multitude of different reasons.

This is the biggest diesel gala the Bluebell has ever had, with 7 engines and 4 units running (with more to be announced!). A far cry from a time not even 20 years ago when the word “diesel” was almost taboo, and even the weekly shunting turn on a Thursday had a steam engine lit up especially for the shunt.

In conclusion to my musings, I hope the 31 and 60 not being “NSE enough” hasn’t put anyone off visiting. At least nobody on here has been complaining about a certain Ivatt Tank from the Isle of Wight not being enough of a Giant… ;)

The Class 60 will definitely NOT put me off coming. I haven't seen the EPB since her days on the East Kent Railway so would be happy seeing her again. Same with the '03; I can't remember the last time I saw her - probably in her IOW days...

Thank you to the team for organising this event - I for one appreciate how much work goes into this; plus getting the exhibits there in the first place...

Actually makes me more likely to attend now!

I’ve been partly following this thread and the announcement of a 60 turning up got my attention! I felt similar to you, things like ‘yeah it sounds interesting’ has become ‘ooh now this I could get excited for’! :D

Something tells me that I might be putting in a short-ish notice holiday request. I’ve done the Bluebell some years ago, when a pair of 20s was meant to be running. I don’t remember a whole ton about that gala, or when it was, apart from the 20s not running when I went. So I’m rather hopeful that, should I go, the 60 will actually run!

Similar for the 31, it’s been way too many years since I last had a journey behind a 31. I genuinely couldn’t tell you when it was, so I’d say probably in excess of 10 years now.

Time will tell if I go to this or not, however I’ve been tempted. I do have another big event in September, so it might not be the gala for me, however I will be strongly considering it!

I urge anyone on the fence to bite the bullet and give us a visit! It's a great line and if you haven't been for some years then there are more things to see than before potentially.

This gala looks like it is going to be incredible, given the number of visitors with apparently more to come. I feel sure the chap who writes the timetables will not dissapoint.

By public transport, you can get the mainline or various Metrobus routes to East Grinstead.

On Saturdays and Sundays, Metrobus route 260 stops at Horsted Keynes station.

Compass Travel 121 also stops at Sheffield Park Station on Saturdays and Sundays.

So come on, come down and have some fun at the Bluebell Railway!
