Overcharged on Gatwick to Aylesbury Project Oval fare

Last Friday at 3pm I used a credit card to tap in at Gatwick heading for Aylesbury, in time for the off-peak PAYG fare of £22.80. Significant disruption at Clapham Junction meant I took the Thameslink for London Bridge, planning to use the Jubilee then Bakerloo lines to Marylebone, then Chiltern to Aylesbury. The Jubilee line tube slowed and waited outside Southwark for a couple of minutes; drew into Southwark then dwelt there doors-open for several minutes; the driver then announced a lineside fire at Kilburn was now causing delay on the Jubilee.

I alighted, walked to Lambeth North, took the Bakerloo to Marylebone and caught the Chiltern service to Aylesbury. I did not hang around on the stationary train for unknown further delay, nor to hear whether/where/when it would be taken out of service.

I have been charged £35.70 for the journey: £13.50 for Gatwick to Southwark and £22.80 for Lambeth North to Aylesbury.

I want a refund of the difference between the £22.80 GTW-AYS fare and the £35.70 I was charged. Who should I contact? Thoughts gratefully received.

I am not concerned with delay repay.

You should contact TfL, who administer the TfL PAYG scheme. They should be able to refund you the difference.

Although mine was a simpler case, where I got off the Underground and walked to continue my journey, TfL refused the refund and just stated I was charged the correct fare.
I did Holborn to Russell Square, then the train stopped so I walked to King's Cross instead to pick up the Victoria line, the break to walk meant I was charged two seperate fares and TfL refused the refund.

Maybe you'll have better luck, but maybe not.

I'm of the impression that TfL generally consider it to be a case of "you pay for what you do" even if you change what you do due to disruption, as sometimes that will be good and sometimes bad, i.e. you might save by using bus instead of rail.

Delay Repay might therefore be the easiest way to get some money back if you were delayed.

Contact TfL and explain the situation.

Also worth noting to them that, had you taken a slightly different walking route between the Jubilee and Bakerloo lines, you would haven't have been charged the extra. There are OSIs between Southwark and Waterloo East, and between Waterloo East and Waterloo (LU).

Neither of which were possible last Friday as Waterloo East and Charing Cross are both closed for 3 weeks.

I claimed the £12.90 with a message submitted via my TfL account. They have agreed to refund this amount. Nice polite message back, and no quibbling.

Thanks to all above - particularly for the OSI point which I noted in the message to TfL.
