East-West Rail (EWR) countdown to entry into service

Not sure there's much new information here, but it's also being reported by the Oxford mail.
A dispute that halted the much-anticipated introduction of new trains to Milton Keynes could soon come to an end, but not through the recruitment of guards

Instead, Chiltern Railways has started hiring Customer Service Inspectors—roles that closely resemble the duties of traditional guards..

An internal government document confirms issues at Winslow station will not obstruct operation, and the fleet of trains has been upgraded with 'Superpower mode' to enhance acceleration and meet a tight timetable.

I'll be excited to see what "superpower mode" on a 196 is like. I bet it'll be positively wild.

How have they solved the DOO question on the Bletchley - Milton Keynes Central section
The same way as Bicester to Bletchley, I'd imagine.

If positively wild = actually making the timetable work, then yes... it will be positively wild.

Maybe they've remapped the engine, fitted a fiberglass bodykit and bought some big alloys from Halfords.

Probably would have been simpler for the rosco to agree to, that.
It been quite difficult, apparently.
The mode , I think, is a basic fundamental element which cannot be changed easily.
Certainly not changed at will, as you may do with sport mode on your car.

.. and the BBC yesterday published an article that could have been written anytime in the last 18 months, saying nothing was happening..

3 August 2026
More than a year after an operator was chosen to run the new East West Rail service, passenger trains on the first section of the route are yet to begin.

The infrastructure between Oxford and Milton Keynes has been available since October 2024, but has only been used for training runs, freight services and HS2-related testing.

Operator Chiltern Railways had been appointed in March 2025 and said "significant progress" had been made, but could not provide a date for the route opening.
.. so it's "significant progress" now, whereas before things were "happening at pace".

That's all..

However, the Clarion preceded the Oxford Mail with roughly the same content last week https://oxfordclarion.uk/clarion-weekend-31-july-2026/
The dispute stopping trains running to Milton Keynes could be resolved as Chiltern Railways is recruiting additional members of staff – though stopping short of calling them “guards”.

Good to see progress! Is there an actual timetable yet? I'm interested in what connection time there will be to/from Marston Vale services at Bletchley.

No proper timetable (afaik), but searching RTT you can find placeholder trains at Winslow (I picked 16 December as an example, linked here). Doing a quick check, a train arrives from Oxford at XX48 (give or take depending on the specific hour) and the Bletchley train typically departs at XX52, so the connection seems pretty tight. Annoyingly, in the other direction, trains from Bedford seem to arrive just a few minutes after an Oxford train departs. Somebody ought to sort that out!

Regardless, it's good to (finally) see a light at the end of the Ox-MK tunnel.

Minimum interchange time for a valid itinerary is 5 mins

Arrivals from Bedford at Bletchley are roughly just before xx.55 in the morning peak, then xx.38 (apart from the 16.43 arrival, presumably for school traffic)

Trains from Bletchley to Oxford seem to leave at xx.25 and xx.55 past each hour, although there is a fair bit of movement through the day:

So a normal interchange from Marston Vale to Oxford or Bicester will be quite poor in the morning peak (30mins) and long but not excessive the rest of the day (~17mins)
____

Trains from Oxford to Bletchley seem to arrive just before xx.20 and xx.50 (again, a fair amount of variance):

Trains from Bletchley to Bedford seem to depart at xx.16 in the morning and then xx.52 through the rest of the day. So you'll have a half-hour wait at Bletchley if trying to travel towards the Marston Vale, although if you miss an EWR train and get the one half an hour later, you'll have an hour's connection waiting for the Bedford train.

I wonder what LNR's policy on holding the MV will be?

We do recognise that other journalists have exacting article targets laid down by their corporate masters (blame the game, not the player). We are a little amused/frustrated when they make their quota by lifting our stories and rearranging the words a little, as happened with our East West Rail exclusive from Friday’s newsletter.

I see. It does make me wonder what the chances of a two trains per hour on the Marston Vale are ?.
Probably need one or two more units. If it is paths then not very promising for an extension to Cambridge.

Even more possible what conflicting moves are there that would prevent Marston Vale timings being changed.

It would be interesting to see how MV are currently performing as well - I often see cancellations so opt to drive instead and with only three units for use it's a risky commute in my humble opinion ;)

Units (only Class 150s or 153s can be used due to signal positioning) and demand. For what it's worth I can't see much demand for Oxford to Bedford in the early days, I'd think most people making connections will likely be doing so to London (from Winslow), with most other demand being for direct journeys to either MK or Oxford.

There's a proposal/ plan to start running an hourly Oxford to Bedford at some point before the huge interventions. 2030 I saw. Extra MV stoppers are probably unlikely given the expected lifespan of a bunch of the stops.

With the current Milton Keynes – Oxford timetable, Milton Keynes Central – Bletchley will effectively be turn-up-and-go, with the longest gaps being 14 minutes (xx:00, 05, 17, 30, 35, 47 southbound, xx:02, 09, 18, 32, 39, 48 northbound).

Perhaps so, but the majority of non-car-users would use the bus for this journey because there'll be less of a walk at each end (or a taxi, which are very cheap here because of the short journey times). Any car owner would only use the car unless planning on consuming alcohol, because parking is plentiful and cheap and the journey time is usually well under 10 minutes.

The minority using the train for that journey presumably including people whose nearest station is Bletchley and going to Manchester, Liverpool etc. and who would be likelier to consider a change of train with the first / last mile being so frequent.

I expect people doing that (such as me) already do, there are already four trains per hour (xx02, xx32, xx09, xx39) which connect fairly well with the Avanti services north. I can't see it having any significant impact on passenger numbers between Bletchley and MKC. Not least because it's less convenient at both ends, with a substantially longer walk from the entrance at Bletchley and a slightly longer walk (than the 02/32) at MKC.

The plus may be them being more punctual, but if I go for the xx32 before the Avantis in the xx40-xx55 range I don't think I've ever missed one (the 39 can be a bit tight as the stoppers often lose time).

You wouldn't want to encourage passengers going one stop onto the 2 car from Oxford if there are 8/10/12s going 4 times an hour, really.

This was dropped as part of the proposals published in East West Rail's consultation earlier this year.

If/when the Bedford, Aylesbury and Cambridge sections are completed, will the debate over DOO restart? Or will all services over East West Rail be operated with DOO + 1 miscellaneous staff member for the forseeable future?

I'm guessing upcoming GBR operational restructuring will mean that 'Chiltern' won't be a thing for many more years, so it'll be the same operating body that runs Oxford-MK, Oxford-Bedford and Oxford-Cambridge, without anyone wondering what a Chiltern service is doing in East Anglia. Not sure how that would actually work though, as presumably interworking with other Chiltern/LNR/GA routes wouldn't be possible, but at the same time having a whole separate GBR sub-brand for East West Rail would be even more fragmented than currently. Some sort of GBR InterRegio brand (for routes like EWR, Liverpool-Cleethorpes, Stansted-Birmingham and Norwich-Liverpool) will presumably be required.

Why might differentiated 'branding' be 'required'? What's wrong with GBR as an integrating element? One railway; one co-ordinated timetable.

So much for co-ordination? I appreciate that 'main line' trains at MK might not be quite 'clockface' but why can't EWR be?

Agree 100% re. your timetabling point but there's inevitably going to be limits to how much you can integrate things from an operational point of view - e.g. if EWR is run out of Bletchley depot then you can't interwork with routes like Oxford-Banbury or Oxford-Marylebone even if the TOC is the same.

With devolution on the rise (in most cases for the better), you wouldn't want to end up in the same situation as the French or Polish, where commuter services within a city region are devolved, but medium-distance interregional services remain low-quality uncoordinated services that nobody wants to pay for. So either GBR has to figure out a way to properly fund and run these services in-house, or they'll eventually become victim to years of endless buck-passing between GBR and devolved regions/countries (such as TFW, TfGM or WMT).

For example, someting as simple as a Cardiff - Birmingham Moor St semifast train could certainly face chronic neglect and underinvestment because it's not seen as anybody's problem. Numerous posters have previously been concerned about TFW already doing this with the English borders region (although to what extent this happens, is contentious) and this would essentially be that but on a large scale. At the same time, ignoring the problem altogether and making it all pure-GBR (with union jack trains and all) disincentivises many city regions from developing good quality urban crossrail/S-bahn networks - e.g. Oxfordshire is working on its OxRail 2040 plans and the Cowley branch, and if the city will have cross-city local services, these would certainly make sense to be devolved.

I did wonder. The original shadow timetable that was in last year was clockface, it's odd that it now isn't.

Its dictated by the WCML slow lines to an extent.
