the orange socks were for another weather problem which followed on from that...

The fog was bad enough to make visibility across the pitch very difficult. Curiously the surviving TV film doesn't show how bad it was, but there were periods where you couldn't see the ball at all.
The pitch floodlights might have helped but they weren't used as they didn't meet the required specs.
