Was on 4035 this morning. Sounded as if they had put a diesel engine in it! Anyone know what is up with it?

Not sure if it was 35 but there was a set taken out of use this morning, was at the signal from Manors curve going back to the depot when I was on way to work.

It got me to South Hylton at about 8:10 so don't think it would have been.

From what you've said, it might be a compressor fault. Still running around as I can't see it at the depot.

Yep, I seen and heard this also from the same unit whilst at Pelaw, my first impression was that it was a grand central train pulling into the leamside line waiting to head back towards Sunderland but it came from the unit itself. The rear carriage(4049) was fine but I can't say I ever heard a metro sounding like that before.

Was on 4049 at about 9:30, South Gosforth - Callerton Parkway. When it came into the station 4035 smelt awful, presumably the brakes, perhaps part of the problem?

Off topic a bit but a few weeks ago we were passing Gateshead Stadium so tried the Metro to see what it was like, while we were buying tickets i heard a train pulling in, i walked out to check and it was terminating at Gateshead Stadium, then turned around and ran wrong line to the cross over on the Newcastle side out of service.

[EDIT] 24/08/2011 the date was

Is it a regularly used cross over or nothing special.

And if its a stupid question, its because i have no Knowledge of the T&W Metro.

That could of been the day pelaw to east boldon went down for a few hours might of turned it and sent it back to depot till problem was sorted. Cause my train got turned at east boldon and sent back to sunderland been about 1pm when it happened.

Only normally used during disruption or engineering works. Can't remember if there were some problems on that exact date, and there haven't been any engineering works going on that would use that crossover.

Only other thing I can think of is either a test run if the train has had problems (usually they go to Pelaw and reverse there), or driver training. There are some new drivers getting trained up at the minute and they have been going out under instruction recently.

Seems strange to terminate it at Gateshead Stadium, unless Pelaw sidings was full.

Saw 35 at the depot today, looks as if it is something wrong with the compressor.

Saw 4035 and 49 coming out of the depot today (towards Longbenton.) 4049 had "Not in service" on its blinds. Perhaps it was taken out of service or used in peak time today. Anybody seen it today?

Not since I got into work this morning, so probably fixed overnight. Might also have been going out for a test run to see if the problem was fixed (some trains use the east end of the depot to turn the set around and run south to South Gosforth).

Seems like whatever the problem was has been fixed as 4035 sounds like any other metro when I seen it yesterday.

09 and 45 failed yesterday at around half 4 at South Gosforth with a lack of door tones and PA. Probably one of the worst places on the system to fail: train was going towards the Airport and had the green signal and route set. From what I can remember only one train can pass over the South Gosforth junction at a time, so this delayed my train running towards Monument (and any train coming from Regent Centre). Plus trains started to back up along the line from West Jesmond to Ilford Road. Bet that cost a few pennines in delay minutes!

South Gosforth Junction can handle more than one train at a time (obviously assuming they don't need to cross paths!).

Trust me – it’s correct.

I have used that section of the route twice daily for the best part of the last 10 years, and very often before that too. I also used to live in one of the houses right outside the station (for over 3 years), and could see the trains arriving and departing from my desk (where I spent excessive amounts of time watching the world go by instead of working).

It happens very often. There is no reason why two trains should not be able to traverse the junction at the same time, provided their paths do not cross.

Jon

PS - thanks for the welcome, I've lurked here for a good few years now, so figured I might want to show my face... :)

I've asked one of the drivers to see what he says. I've never seen it happen, and have often been on a train waiting for the section to clear before getting the green signal (even on the same route, and not a conflicting one). I had assumed this was something to do with the fact there is an isolated section where the driver has to coast through.

Update - after talking to a driver, he says that only one train is allowed through that section at a time. Have to say that I've never seen more than one go through at a time, even if the routes are set correctly and there isn't a conflicting move.

Interesting! They certainly used to do it... Seems a strange restriction to have, essentially placing a nice sized section of single track right on the core of the network...

Did the driver say why by any chance?

Think it is mainly due to the neutral section at the crossover - where the driver has to shut off power and coast through. May also be to stop too many Metrocars being in the same section in case the overhead trips (has happened before).

I'm not 100% sure but I would hazard an informed guess that there is some sort of interlocking with the signals - say for example signal 102 at the north end of South Gosforth - when this is 'off' and the route set for the Airport, I wouldn't be surprised if signal 165 is 'on' (ie red), which protects the junction from Regent Centre, and also signal 121 (IIRC) which protects it from Longbenton might be red as well.

Next time I'm up there I'll check to see what happens, might have a few things the wrong way around.

This happened today on my way to work. I was on a yellow line train that was heading south, and another train departed going north as we were crossing the junction and entering the station... Didn't see where the other one was going though...

I'll be up at the Depot next week so will have a look to see what happens.

Was at South Gosforth yesterday, waiting for a train to Monument (from Regent Centre direction). Train was waiting to go to Regent Centre from South Gosforth, and only had a green signal and route indicator as my Metro was reaching the isolated section of the junction, so must be some sort of treadle or track circuit there.

Will have to check again later on in the week due to the engineering work on yesterday between South Gosforth and Monkseaton.
