Looks like a lot of changes to come from Stagecoach (and other operators) in Devon from 30th August: details here by clicking "August 2026".

Well, that's one way to electrify your fleet; hand over the low bridge route to another operator. I hope that, when the time comes for Greenslades to electrify, either Tan Lane will be remodelled for better clearance, or we will have lower height electrics, preferably both!

Wow! The X replacing the C is truly awful. Firstly its only every hour South Street to Exminster and it no longer serves Matford Park and Ride. In addition, there will be an extra hourly lopp service running South Street to Haven Banks that goes outbound last stop Riverside Leisure Centre on the main road and then takes Willeys Ave without stopping to loop back next stop being Haven Close (the first stop after Tan Lane). Talk about worlds most pointless loop and also, given it interworks with the main hourly service, the delays at Exe Bridges are almost guaranteed to mean huge delays. So these changes mean a halving of the Matford P&R service and several stops in Matford drop from every 20 to hourly. The Sunday service on this route also goes and the last bus is 1755 from Exeter! Also, its not Stagecoach so their weekly tickets won't be valid.

The B stays the same frequency Mon-Sat but goes every 30 Sunday.
The PR1 is a big enhancement as it runs every 15 mins Mon-Sat and runs express from town to Gallows Corner, calling only at Heavitree Co-op. It will also terminate at the old Park and Ride stop outside Next on Paris Street. So this removes 3 buses from the High St in effect too.

Network Rail will not be spending millions on a new Tan Lane bridge, which is a very narrow private road used mostly by buses. The bridge is more likely to be closed. The buses might just become mini buses - the X should show real demand.

Matford P&R is not used much today; the current provision of at least 8 buses an hour into the city centre is not necessary (B, C, 7, 38, 39).
The commercial / industrial areas (it is not primarily retail) of Marsh Barton & Matford also produce quite limited demand. I suspect a 20 min frequency by the B matches demand and the missed stops in Marsh Barton won't be missed by many. The demand from Exminster, particularly to the Marsh Barton area, I suspect has not increased enough following the introduction of the B a few years ago, and the X and 2 (via the hospital) will have to suffice.

The X, for all its limited frequency, will route via Marsh Barton station and restore a service to the Matford Silverton Road area.

The big improvement to the Sowton P&R with the PR1 is interesting. Sowton P&R is also used much less than it was and may be could replace Matford in the future.
Matford P&R was reduced in size to build the Stagecoach replacement for its city centre depot. Stagecoach use the P&R site as a bus park already.

If my car is in car land for a service, I am more likely to walk to the Matford P&R (Stagecoach depot) stop and take a 7 or 39 (hourly) out of town, than a B or C into the city.

I agree with all your points. There will be a few bus drivers who will be impacted as they are the main passengers to/from Matford lol. The short X loop is utterly pointless. Be interesting to see what Greenslades run the X with. Not having the PR1 cross town makes sense as the Matford bit of the C kills reliability. Running it fast helps keep running time down and makes Sowton more appealing.

The other big negative change is the 4 serving the Uni en-route to/from St Davids instead of after/before. This means an extra 15-20 mins on the journey from St Davids to town which is ridiculous. I get it better uses resources but to the massive detriment of passengers. Those getting on at Exeter College will now need to board from the main road not outside to avoid having to do the Uni loop en-route to town and Cranbrook.

I can't remember when it was last run as Service 3 all the way to Dartmouth but I am sure it was First who split the 3 up into the 3 and 93.

If I recall rightly, and heading out of the area somewhat, Bennetts Coaches used to have the contract for a Park & Ride service in Gloucester which linked the Waterwells P&R to another Park & Ride, now closed, in that city. I recall that the route was known as Service 507 and used Merc Citaros.

Perhaps one answer, rather than using city services to cover Matford P&R, would be to have a similar setup with a dedicated route running Sowton P&R - City Centre - Matford P&R and, given the apparent lack of popularity with Matford P&R, have - say - 4bph Sowton P&R - City Centre with alternate journeys through to Matford P&R?

I tjink First ran the 93 from Plymouth to Dartmouth. The 3 and 3a were Plymouth local services, covering Devonport, St Budeaux, West Park, Pennycross and Peverell.

The 3/3A ran Prince Rock/Cattedown - Mutley Plain - Peverell - Milehouse - St Levan Road - Devonport - Millbridge - City Centre - Cattedown/Prince Rock. Journeys the opposite way round ran as 4/4A. WN ran the 93 Plymouth to Dartmouth.

Don't remember that 3/3a sorry. The 3/3a i am referring to was right up until withdrawal in 2015, in competition with several citybus services including the 61

I have no knowledge of the 3/3a to which you refer. Sorry. Different eras.

Plymouth - Dartmouth was Stagecoach 3 in the summer of 2022. Stagecoach split it into 3 and 93 in the Autumn 2022. I don't have the change date only the split was in the South Hams timetable reprint dated Oct 22, but as a through route in the June 22 book.

Actually DCC split the service and changed the number as they onlh support the 93. They did it across Devon to show which buts they supported. It was utterly ridiculous.

But the C is much quicker than the B as it avoids the congestion along Alphington Road and uses the Tan Lane bridge as a short cut. Folks from Exminster won't be happy with these changes as they go down from 5 to 3 buses an hour, and service 2 is already busy, especially in holiday season. Matford P&R is very well used (unless the cars I see there are all from Stagecoach drivers). Parking space has been reduced by the EV charging points.

I’ve recently noticed a few of the Ex Torbay ALX400 Tridents have received new V5 logbooks recently on the Gov web which got me wondering if any have been saved? To name a few I’ve noticed: stripes 18308, 18368 (I’d heard reports the latter was going to return to use at Stagecoach) and 18513 with a new Tax (I’ve see photos of this one at Newton Abbot race course a couple of months ago)

I’m aware 18136 KN04XJL was saved which is nice to hear!

As for the last one remaining 18079, it hasn’t seen much use recently, assuming it is not needed with the schools being off?

Stagecoach split the service not DCC
Wasn't the split more to do with the "50 km rule" (likewise the 7 and 92, now 7 throughout)? Although the current 7 (Exeter - Dartmouth) still has the footnote "This bus continues as a through service with through tickets available and passengers can remain on the bus".

DCC insisted on all DCC services having different numbers to show what they were funding, regardless of how stupid and confusing that was for passengers. Stagecoach split the route for 50km rule but it was still 3 throughout. DCC created this mess and the 7 mess. The 346 and 155 is another DCC mess, just much worse.

Yes, at the time that was the original reason.
