Just like 50 years ago then, when Gerry Fiennes' few comments about government inaction in his book had the ministry, appalled at the slightest critical comment, just get rid of him.

Yes, but I am lead to believe that the Old Dalby test track is fully booked. possibly why Marston is being used.

Plus the Long Marston test track is a continuous loop, where as Dalby is split into sections, where you have to constantly stop and reverse

A Hitachi Rail spokesperson said: “The Class 810 fleet has been in passenger service with East Midlands Railway since December 2025 and more than a third of the fleet has now been delivered.

“Hitachi Rail continues to work closely with all industry partners during the entry-into-service phase of the Class 810 fleet, implementing improvements and supporting the transition from the existing fleet to new Aurora trains. “

We remain focused on delivering the remainder of the fleet and supporting East Midlands Railway as more new trains enter passenger service. As part of this commitment, we are investing in additional testing activity at Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre to improve fleet introduction and delivery of the remaining trains.”

I wouldn't be surprised if 4 diagrams is now booked in the temporary timetable given the loss of T15 (and T19 being away for works)

How many units are required for the reduced timetable and what is the split between 222's and 810 requirement?

Looks to be 4 810s and 14 222s in the reduced timetable (as opposed to 6 810s and 20 222s normally)

According to a political commentator the services are reduced by 50%. The reality is probaly nearer 15%. However if these allocations are correct the reduction in units is nearer 30%?

In terms of seating capacity, yes. In terms of actual services running, no.

Any news on what the new train issues actually are? Bland 'not in service' comments don't cover it, not even 'Air Con failed'. What's actually wrong with it? Leaks in pipework? Compressor failed? Why are these happening now but not elsewhere, or not detected in initial testing? Who is working on it, not just 'I've fixed it now', but the permanent solution. For so many to be out of action there is surely some common thread.

Looks like 810011 has had an issue on 1C80. This service was cancelled between Derby and St Pancras International due to a problem with the train (M8). It was stopped at Belper for 20 odd minutes.

New trains are obviously a big problem, but I am more interested in why Hitachi are not delivering enough 222s for service everyday.


Last week and prior, there were mostly six 810s in traffic every day. Theoretically six new 810s a day easily covers stood down 222s to Lumo and 222104. Obviously every additional 810 into traffic theoretically allows another 222 to stand down for dilapidation hand back. I believe one of the 222s is long term stopped requiring a new cab.

I'd be surprised if Hitachi & the DfT had a particularly favourable relationship at the moment. IEP has been expensive & their reliability is hardly above average; the class 805s only running on 2 engines isn't uncommon.

I think 810018 also had issues last evening around Market Harborough?

Brand new trains. Some of these issues may have not been identified during testing. The way passengers use a train can be very different to just running and mileage testing.

Exactly. Issues can crop up with anything over time and use. Not that I am trying, nor wish to defend Hitachi, but a unit which may be fine during static testing at Merchant Park can develop faults when members of the public start to use them whilst being ran up and down the MML at 100 and something MPH, doors, toilets, air con etc!
