Talking about ATMs they didn't become really widespread until the 1980s although I must have had a Lloyds Cashpoint card from about 1975. At first the maximum withdrawal at most Cashpoint machines must have been £20 in £1 notes and many of the machines were inside branches.
In the 1950s my father would arrange an 'open credit' in Scarborough to allow him to draw cash there from his account in Newcastle. I recall my wife's uncle, who lived in what was then Rhodesia, travelled using a World Letter of Credit. A double sided folding A4 document enabling him to draw cash at named banks worldwide - a precursor of travellers cheques! I've found a picture of one just like the one he carried back about 1967.
