Audio/visual "next stop" announcements on buses

Where have like various operators placed the wheelchair accessible screen and is it any different to the "main" screen used across the network?

I know I've been posting a lot for photos about this but for some reason I really like looking at next stop screens.

Their's two places to my knowledge so far...

First is in the divider for the bay & the seats like this (https://www.flickr.com/photos/lothi...KRQPD-2pKRah1-2pKRQSK-2pG87a2-2pBoKqX-2pzX1JG)

The other one is in the cove panel above like this (https://www.flickr.com/photos/13870...29o4SWt-2aG5xTC-2aLtHLn-2dF1XHJ-N6Z1uy-N6Z1Af)

Don't have a photo to hand, but Manchester mounte them between the grab rail at the end of the wheelchair space, and the side wall of the bus, at the same height as the rear facing screen.

This is probably the best position I've seen in terms of making the content of the screen visible, although it does have the minor disadvantage of obscuring the forward from the seats behind.

Also there are some Enviro 400s which have been retrofitted such that the forward facing screen blocks the view of the rear facing one. Whoops!

Same with Arriva's 74/25-plate Wright Streetdeck Electroliners in Leicester (which may have been mentioned before in this thread). The smaller 75-plate batch that followed rectified this with a slimmer forwards-facing LED display on the offside in place of the forwards-facing screen on the left that the preceding batch had.

There seems to be an understanding that there are enough PSVAIR compliant buses spare and available to cover all rail replacement work in the UK, so no grants are available for buses, only for coaches.

I have a Mobitec display and ICU602 setup going on my Citaro 2 and I’m quite happy with it. I do all the display, audio and route programming myself. On the back of this, I have purchased more kits to install in more of my buses. As I am principally a bus driver, I have been trialling it extensively while in service and refining until happy with how the announcements and displays are configured.

Currently at an advanced stage of setting it up for Welsh rail replacement routes, which have the added element of needing announcements and displays in English and Welsh. Looking forward to testing that out too :)

I am also going to trial a Hanover EG4 in one vehicle that already has Hanover destination displays and see how I get on with that. I’ve read about DG3 and HTC setups but I’m ok with trying the latest tech.

Aesthetically (and also for readability on some buses; the front facing screen is in the way of the rear one), I like the screen to be mounted in the cove but obviously it's a bit harder for readability.

That's pretty cool actually. I'd like to see it once you're ready if that's OK :)

Having tremendous amounts of fun fitting the equipment :D

Quite a few vehicles in my fleet are ex-London - none of them were fitted with hearing loops, so I'm progressively having them done. Having the Mobitec and Lawo blind boxes replaced with Hanover LEDs has produced some complications when fitting the Mobitec internal display, controller and integration unit, so these are all being taken apart and wired again from scratch. Further buses have entered the fleet which have Mobitec roller blinds, so hopefully will be easier to swap with Mobitec LEDs.

Meanwhile on the programming front, I'm making tracks with Mobi Info Edit Advanced and Hanover Central/HELEN. I've finally got MIE doing the announcements and internal displays just the way I want them done. I've created a separate database for the Welsh routes - spent a fair amount of time programming in the announcements and displays in both English and Welsh and will shortly be enlisting the services of a Welsh speaker to ensure pronunciation and grammatical context are spot on. I've chosen to standardise on the Welsh vocabulary used by Transport for Wales, a challenge has been to get the displays to show the characters correctly. For example, the â with the circumflex isn't available in all of the native MIE fonts, but to me it's important to get it right. My Citaro 2 is having some very heavy duty exhaust system repairs, but once it's back, testing will be done before it goes out in service next month.

While I have a Hanover EG4 on order to fit in one Citaro, another bus is entering the fleet which was specced with an older HTC/DG3 setup, so another system to get to grips with! Joy of joys!

Slightly off topic, and sorry if I have missed this in an earlier post, but do you run commercial bus services? Or do you preserve older buses?

Putting most of the larger operators to shame, I had a ride on a 59 plate Centrebus South Optare Solo on Saturday which had been fitted with both audio and visual next stop announcements.

I don’t run any commercial bus services and yes, I do preserve some buses, mostly from the 2000s though I have had a B10M Citybus and an Olympian at one point.

I'm intrigued with next stop displays and the technical equipment behind them, so loving these updates RJ - thank you.

It doesn't surprise me with from what you're saying about how poorly these things play with each other that operators are struggling to get them implemented. Realistically you would have thought that the industry would have landed upon an API which would allow interconnectivity, but alas, I guess they want everyone to have vendor lock in!

Noticed with Stagecoach (Chester/Wirral)

84 (Chester garage) female voice
X1/1 (Rock Ferry) male voice
The 1/X1 services have had this male voice for quite a few years, I'm unsure if they came along with the YX23s but I remember the voice used to only be on those, until the 2014 onward requirement happened and the 16 plates started using the male voice as well.

The female voice seems to be used for literally everything else, and I'm pretty sure it's an Elevenlabs voice however I cannot remember which one specifically.

On First Wessex/Dorset buses the bus terminating audio message now thanks you for travelling with First Wessex whereas it did say First South, wonder why they changed it?

Hanover is great! Even trentbarton are using it now on anything new and some of the retrofits.

Not sure that's much of an endorsement given I've been on three of their buses since the regulations came in, and the stop announcement system was installed but broken on all three...

That said I have no idea which system any of them had. All three were Enviro 200s in the Derby area, if that helps.

They'll be the Aesys ones & they are not exactly well known for reliability.

They have worked most of the time, although hanover is probably better considering it's more widespread. I'm honestly surprised Trent didn't decide to go with a Mobitec system on the ones fitted with that as it would've only required rewiring in the dests and adding a new screen.

Around the time of the rebranding with the new logo, Leicester's announcements were changed to say First Bus instead of First Leicester.

For the line of work I do, I was asked to get the buses PSVAIR compliant by tomorrow.

My Mercedes Citaro 2 has a full Mobitec setup. It is being fitted with a hearing loop and then will be all done.

One of my ex London Mercedes Citaros has had Mobitec internal kit fitted, but already had Hanover external LEDs. It turns out the way the Hanover LEDs were wired up when installed was non-standard, this was preventing them from integrating with the Mobitec system. I had the Hanover setup rewired from scratch. The displays now work perfectly with the Mobitec system. Scrolling displays aren't supported when using the Mobitec system with Hanover LEDs, but I don't tend to use them with external displays. The hearing loop has been fitted and is operational.

Another of my Mercedes Citaros has Hanover external LEDs. I have purchased Hanover EG4 next stop announcement equipment and a hearing loop for it which is meant to be fitted in two weeks, but I'm considering selling this bus so might hold onto the kit. This is likely to be replaced by a Citaro which is fully kitted out with Hanover LEDs and a Hanover HTC + DG3 setup.

Finally a Volvo B9TL I bought is still in London spec with Mobitec smart blinds. I have purchased a new set of Mobitec LEDs which are being installed, so this will be a full Mobitec setup. I've already had the Mobitec next stop announcement and hearing loop retrofitted. A complication has been audio resonance issues where background noise is apparent when announcements play. This has required amplifier tuning as well as physical examination of the audio circuit and sources of interference. The amplifier was also faulty as there was no output, but promptly replaced with a new one.

Despite having a microfleet, there's a myriad of setups I've had to get to grips with. The buses all have different sign sizes too. I've spent many hours with the Mobi Info Edit software. Learning the programming is only one part of it, an unexpected element has been learning the quirks with each different setup and how to overcome them, as well as devising ways to short circuit the programming process - without doing this, programming for different setups becomes very time consuming.

Creating hundreds of voice files from scratch has been fun. Some places need some phonetic manipulation to get right - Bosham, Seaford and Ore spring to mind. I’m employing the services of Welsh speakers carry out quality control on the Welsh location files. The dual language aspect has certainly been enjoyable to work out and thrown up some programming curve balls, but I’m over those now!

The best part is having ready access to buses so I can just jump in and test out the programming and triggers. Seeing as there is no easy way to simulate the announcements in the software, this has undoubtedly helped the process!

How does it work - is there an easy way to apply the next stop stuff with different size configurations or does it need redone over and over again? Or can it be imported / exported with a spreadsheet?

I copy the destination displays from one config to the other then batch format them. However with time spent on the app, it's a learning process to see what the copy function does - it's not always what is expected.

It's like with Transdev's considering you have many different stuff plugged in, like countdown, which can either be done manually or triggered by the ticketer machine automatically.
