Chiltern application to run more London-Birmingham services

There's an article from Rail Magazine stating that Chiltern have applied to run more London-Birmingham services from December 2026.
Chiltern Railways has formally applied to increase the number of services between London and Birmingham from December 2026...
However, the rest is paywalled so can't read the full details, and I can't find any equivalent press release on the Chiltern website or elsewhere.

Does anyone have the full details of the application and exactly what services have been applied for please?

I live in hope of later last trains at the weekend, but know that NR won't let that happen!

Anywhere but here...
It would be nice if the uplift in service levels brought back some quicker trains.

At the moment they are simply competing with LNR who are cheaper for a very similar journey time.

Chiltern Railways has applied to increase the number of services between London and Birmingham from December 2026, RAIL reports.

The operator said that a full fleet of 13 Mk 5As would allow it to run services every 30-minutes between Marylebone and Moor Street on weekdays, as well as offering additional peak services.

In its application to rail regulator the Office of Rail and Road, Chiltern said: “Whilst it is recognised that MK5a sets will be fixed formation five-car trains, noting the Mk 3 sets contain six passenger vehicles, it is Chiltern’s intention to operate additional services to provide more frequent journey opportunities on these routes.”
According to this article they want to run a half hourly service.

The service is mostly 2tph throughout the day at the moment. As far as I can tell the missing trains are from London at 08:30, 10:30, 12:30, 21:30 and from Birmingham at 11:15, 13:15, 15:15, 18:45, 19:45, 20:45.
Whether all the gaps in the evenings will be filled who knows.

The track access request does appear on the Network Rail website

It's hard to fully work out what is proposed, but there is an extra Stratford-Marylebone train in each direction that has limited stops (Leamington, Banbury and Bicester North (+ Beaconsfield in one direction). I think these two trains may be planned to run a few minutes before a peak hour Birmingham train (to Marylebone in the morning, from in the evening), to reduce/remove overcrowding on the later train.

Can be found at https://www.networkrail.co.uk/indus...ormation-for-operators/sale-of-access-rights/

In the "Current track access consultations" folder, there is only one for Chiltern.

Does anyone have the current Chiltern class 68 diagrams? And also are they pretty reliable?

All I really want to know is which trains are diagrammed for Class 68 haulage (others may want more detailed info than that!)

Thanks :)

There should be an increase to 10 loco hauled diagrams from the December 2026 timetable change.

100% so long as they haven't been withdrawn from service.
*usual caveats apply, naturally.

I also understand that there will be an increase in quantum of mk5a services from the beginning of leaf fall (last week of September), too.

Is it meant to be Mk5 instead of Mk3?

I think that makes the 08:26 TuWTh Gerrards Cross to Marylebone the only regularly scheduled loco-hauled service which Oyster cards are valid on, as it calls at West Ruislip at 08:36.

Oddly, correct.
Such a bizarre thing to be able to do!

Very; it's a working that I've used a few times when collecting haulages... I now only need one rake and I think four of the 68s ( five if you count the Chiltern spare 68 016 ), which is a vast improvement on what I got when they were with TPE... :)

With declining 165 reliability I thought the mk5s were replacing some 168s that might need to pick up 165 diagrams but Chiltern must be feeling confident.

Don't think i quite follow..
To be fair though the logic has been somewhat distorted.

Mk3s needed to go (overhaul time / major exams / age / cost - take your pick).
No mk3s = huge gap in capacity.
(Ageing 75 / 100 mph fleet adds to this issue)

Exercise undertaken to find additional capacity options.... mk5a successor to mk3 being this outcome.

Limited options available to reconfigure the fleet, take on enough to cover the loss of the mk3s only. ...All or nothing, so all it is.

Timetable rewrite required, and achieved, for dec26.
Mk5a now replaces most 100 mph units between London and Birmingham.

Timetable rewrite, naturally, forces stabling/ unit allocation / location issues.
With other factors involved (not mentionable here) the Timetable completely rejigged to reallocate capacity and units to alleviate other overcrowding pinch points.

It wasn't only Birmingham which has capacity constraints. Mk5a has both positive and negative aspects (see other threads) but it doesn't nessesarily follow that addition of mk5a sets means all the existing units will be reallocated as they just can't. It seems illogical, but this is the railway. Not much is as simple as may appear.

The short version would of course read:
All of Chilterns existing fleet is old and needs attention. The mk5a does not begin to solve all the issues faced, likely making some areas worse by reaction, while taking over important duties, everything else is rejigged behind them and may not fall back down in seemingly logical fashion.

Honestly the 168s have been failing way more than the 165s have recently, with the 165s more than likely ending up on 168 services rather than the other way around, even sometimes ending up on MK5 diagrams!

This is interesting, since GWR's 165s seem to be causing cancellations on a daily basis (Reading to Gatwick being a case in point). I wonder whether Chiltern's are more reliable or if the 168s are worse?

It's difficult to compare classes between operators.
They use then differently, treat them equally as different and both have widely differing uses.

Eg, (no idea, myself) but when did you last see a GWR 165 running the distance between london and Stourbridge or Birmingham in any number or frequency?
