Wheel Lathe list

I know of such things in Longsight (MCR), Allerton (LIV) and Crewe (er... CRE) but where are operational (or nearly-operational-bar-the-part) wheel lathes, particularly in the NW?

It doesn’t answer your question, but I recall in the 1970s there was no wheel lathe at Longsight so the one at Reddish Depot was used instead, leading to things like AC electric locomotives at Reddish for treatment. I think the lathe was moved to Longsight when Reddish closed in 1983, and until the Hadfield line was electrified at 25kV AC the following year the DC EMUs were taken to Longsight for maintenance.

Location of Wheel Lathes

Does anyone know of a list of all the Wheel Lathes in the UK? Alternatively, shall we see if we can compile one? Locations identified so far: Allerton TMD (Northern) Ardwick depot (Siemens for Transpennine Express) Ashford depot (Hitachi for Southeastern) Aylesbury depot (Chiltern Railways)...

There is, but I think it's awaiting repairs, or doesn't have enough capacity since some FLIRTs have been being hauled up to Holyhead's

On the freight side, in addition to Crewe Electric depot there are also lathes at Toton TMD and the GBRF depot at Roberts Road (Doncaster). The former Marcroft wagon works at Stoke (now a wagon repair depot for DB Cargo) has a wheel shop with lathe facilities, and I'm pretty sure Arlington at Eastleigh must also have a wheel lathe as part of their "comprehensive wheelset overhaul services." Also locos have been sent to the Freightliner depot at Leeds Midland Road for tyre turning.

I thought the LNWR depot at Crewe Carraige shed had a wheel lathe, but a google search redirects to the Arriva Traincare website which makes no mention of it in their list of facilities there.

Edit: I think the Network Rail engineering depot at York Holgate (which does overhauls on infrastructure wagons and looks after the sandite fleet) also has a wheel lathe. This interesting video enters an area filled with wheelsets at 9:15, and I assume the contraption resembling an oversized photocopier seen at 10:15 is a wheel lathe, given the "wheel lathe swarf separator guard" pictured immediately afterwards.

We have one at Old Oak Common Elizabeth line Depot. Exclusively used for Class 345s and also Class 710 wheelsets

If you search on the ORR Public register https://www.orr.gov.uk/public-register for "Depot Name" and "Wheel Lathe" you should be able to find the Depot facility annexes or similar title, which should contain a standard list of depot equipment and whether or not it is present at the depot.

Regrettably I don't know all the depots well enough to search each by name, and I don't have the time to go through all results from just searching "Wheel Lathe" because the register will return results when they say 'Wheel Lathe - No' on them. But @TheEngineer would potentially be able to find the depots in the NW they are interested in.

Manchester Metrolink has one at Queen's Road

We have two. One at Queens Road and the other at Trafford.

Both are capable of turning wheels to the full P8 profile. There was talk of an ELR 08 coming down for work but apparently we can’t do the centre wheel set which is P9(?).

I remember as a kid when they had the open day at Queens Road they had a huge set of steam engine driving wheels on there, quite the sight!

It doesn’t have a proper wheel lathe hence why there is one currently under construction at Clacton and most Stadler units are done at alternative locations away from the GA network.
