We've tracked it back to a bug in the iOS app, where it's showing the barcode symbol if any ticket in the fare set is eTicketable rather than all - so unfortunately the basket view is correct when it says paper only.

In some cases I've noticed the semi-flexible fare set is actually eTicketable (such as the Anytime Day Single to Irlam and Off-Peak Day Single from there to Manchester (Central Zone) which is showing on that 19:08-20:11 for me), but you'd have to pay more for that luxury

Thank you so much for your help, however I don’t see any fares in BRFares for Liverpool Airport Bus to Irlam and the issue is when I choose the semi-flexible, so I don’t know

Will grab a single on the bus and then buy the relevant Liverpool South Parkway to Manchester

Thanks a bunch

I don't think that currently any tickets are non-changeable, insofar as you are allowed to rebook and refund the original (subject to the relevant rules, i.e. overall origin and destination matching etc)

Indeed, RailUK is saying in the booking confirmation that LNER Family singles are changeable, unlike other retailers. I just couldn't work out how to do it, as the links take me to a refund page that only references Advance tickets.

Any clue why this query is giving me the £51.90 anytime return instead of the £34.40 Off-Peak Day Return? (16-25 railcard used on both)
It's on the same day, Saturday and goes via Carlisle so I can't see either restriction is relevant here.

Lumo is mandatory reservations, and return no availability on their trains with this ticket for whatever reason, and thus it cannot be sold for those journeys.

Of course, if you buy it through BR Fares instead...

I'm sure support would be happy to issue you a standalone seat reservation after your ticket purchase.

Ah that makes sense, silly that it has to be set up by ticket type though.
I'd imagine Lumo wouldn't be too eager to fix it since if it leads to even one person buying it instead of the cheaper ticket, that's a nice bit of cash for Lumo there that would otherwise be a smaller amount split with Avanti and TPE.

I'm so used to Avanti misusing the compulsory reservations flag that I just ignored it when planning, and I'd expect to see "sold out" rather than it suggesting only more expencive tickets.

I prefer to buy my tickets for my day trips on the day (I wouldn't even wake up until after the Lumo leaves London) so I'll make a seat reservation via TPE's site. Normally I just don't bother with reservations for my day trips.

It makes no sense at all, all walkup tickets should be locked to the same availability, and that should be based on the physical availability only
Yes, more "that makes sense" as it's something I'd head of being an issue before, not that I agree with it, it is incredibly silly.

The industry really needs to get a grip of how the reservation system is being misused. It is a complete free for all today with tariffs conveniently not being set-up for flexible ticket types (that are indisputably valid on the train), seat data that's non-existent, inaccessible to passengers with disabilities or simply wrong. Sales restrictions are put in place at the drop of a hat, usually with no explanation of very questionable logic (I've seen reservations suppressed for weeks because of engineering work on a line that the service doesn't even use).

If you have a London travelcard and you need to buy a ticket from the travelcard boundary to somewhere outside London, what do you need to type in to specify that boundary as the origin of your journey?

You don't type anything in. The origin and destination boxes are for planning a journey. Not stipulating a fare origin/destination (most of the time, anyway..). If you have an existing travelcard you can specify it in the advanced options. Alternatively, buy from BR Fares.

The cynic in me suggests that one or more TOCs argued for there being no equivalent of the old F2 (Standard Class) and F1 (First Class) default quotas that were present in CRS to be carried over to NRS (though I can't be certain on that front) but they're certainly not present in RARS. If they were, such shenanigans wouldn't occur (or, more accurately, TOCs would need to deliberately set different quotas for walk-ups.)

Ah I see. So, checking the website, I just type in my actual origin station (or if I don't care about planning the journey and just want the ticket, any convenient London station), then select 'I have travelcard X' in the advanced options and then the site automatically takes that into account and offers a from-boundary-zone-whatever ticket. Thanks!

It wouldn't surprise me! It's quite difficult as an "outsider" with S3/RARS to know what's genuinely a product limitation and what was quietly de-scoped/deliberately not implemented at the behest of one or two vocal operators.

Which ideally no good TOC would ever contemplate wanting to do, right? :p

If a service is reservable in the timetable, that - to me - should mean you can get a reservation. It shouldn't matter what ticket you hold.

That's the theory, yeah :)

Yes, it would be issued from the last calling point, unless it's cheaper to issue it from Boundary Zone x in which case the Boundary Zone ticket would be issued instead.

(Where x is the relevant zone for the existing Travelcard held)

If you don't want to do any journey planning and don't require an itinerary and know exactly what you want, the alternative is to use BRfares.com

I am travelling from Morecambe to Haywards Heath on 10 August, but I will have a ticket that covers me from Clapham Junction to Haywards Heath.

As I can use contactless from London Euston to reach Clapham Junction, I looked up travel to London Euston. When I do a general search from 08:00, I get a price of £31.80 for a departure at 08:21, which includes changes at Lancaster and Stafford. I arrive at London Euston at 12:24.

If I navigate forward to look at later trains and then back, I now get other journey options, including one at a price of £30.53. This journey also departs at 08:21 and includes changes at Lancaster and Birmingham. I arrive at London Euston at 13:50. If I now edit my search, I see that the time filter has changed from leaving at 08:00 to arriving by 14:00, so I haven't actually gone back to the exact previous screen.

If I start a new search for Morecambe to London Euston leaving at 08:00 and travelling via Birmingham, the journey option for £31.80 doesn't show up. Why is this?

I am allowing overtaken journeys to be shown.

I was just looking at tickets from Capenhurst or Bache to Chester on forum ticketing site and also Trainsplit...

Any idea why it would offer an £18.50 flexible split? I know is because not all trains stop at these stations so it's sending me around the Liverpool loop even though the next direct train is quicker.

Offering this more expensive option just seems stupid.

I don't think it can offer a Merseyrail Day Saver?

(Two images attached showing ticket options, the normal £2.60 offering and the split ticket)

They are clearly insane results that no one would pick - I think we or our supplier need to review the trimming logic here

I would agree. Many of my recent searches have come up with some very illogical results Jim (human brain logical not software, it knows no better). Including offering more expensive split tickets than direct through tickets.

Sometimes direct through tickets are not valid on what could be considered reasonable routes.

I suspect the trainsplit is in a bit of a bind here. It's not at all unusual that someone might want to buy something other than the cheapest ticket (for example, because they want additional flexibility to decide later on on journey time / route / etc.), and it would be next to impossible to devise an algorithm that removes all ridiculous cases without also risking removing ticket options that someone might in a rare situation actually want to buy. It's arguably better to leave the site showing a few ticket options that no-one would want to buy than to not show something 'because it's more expensive' that someone might actually want.

In the case of Bache to Chester, I can well see why the algorithm might show the expensive via-Liverpool route, since it is after all a direct journey, and not showing direct journeys would seem a very risky thing to code for.

I hadn't spotted the slower trains were direct - we intentionally don't hide slower direct trains because it can cause confusion
